Is It Wrong To Add Prayers To The Rosary?

After I pray the Hail Mary, I add:

“Saint Jude,
Apostle martyr
and relative of Our Lord Jesus Christ,
Mary and of Joseph,
intercede for us.”

After I pray the opening rosary prayer, I add:

“Saint Jude, glorious Apostle, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the name of the traitor has caused you to be forgotten by many, but the true Church invokes you universally as the Patron of things despaired of; pray for me, that finally I may receive the consolations and the succor of Heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings, particularly (personal petition) and that I may bless God with the Elect throughout Eternity. Amen.”

And after the Hail Holy Queen, I add:

“St. Jude the often forgotten, you shall be remembered.
We hail you now in glory and have recourse to you for help,
for the despairing, when hopeless seems the task, and from the heart of Jesus through you we favors ask.”

Is this wrong? I’ve learned recently that Catholics don’t really pray their own prayers and adding to prayers seems frowned upon. I wanted to honor St. Jude as my patron by always including him, but now I feel like I’ve been wrong and insulting Mary and making my rosary ineffective and pointless by doing this. I decided not to continue my rosary novena today even though I’m halfway done. I’m trying to learn the Latin prayers now and just pray the prescribed way by the Church, as best as possible.

Not sure who told you that. Catholics can have spontaneous prayer in their private devotions.

I’m happy to know this, thank you 😊 I heard a few times that I should only pray written prayers that have been approved by the church, and when I mentioned that I added to some prayers, I got disapproving remarks about it.

I say the rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy everyday, as well as a few other prayers. But, sometimes, I just like to talk to God at the end of the day.

It’s okay to add things to the Rosary. The traditional place to add prayers to another saint, like St. Joseph, St. Jude, etc is at the end of the Rosary. But it’s not forbidden for you to add an appropriate prayer to St. Jude where you have it at the beginning, etc. either.

Most people who want to pray to another saint beyond 1 prayer at the end will just say the appropriate chaplet for the saint, such as chaplet for St. Michael, St. Jude, St. Anthony etc. rather than adding them to the Rosary.
