Is it wrong to not want to look like a religious fanatic?

Gosh, I have to agree. I used to have to dust my parent’s collections. What a pain.

I am also surprised that so many people don’t have anything up in their house other than Catholic items. I have a lot of Catholic friends. And not one would be able to say this.
To me, a few religious items are nice. A houseful, not so much.

I know houses like this but I simply accept their choices for their home… ah but there is one house I hope I never get to spend a night at as they have a life size Mary Statue on the landing… imagine at night… Moderation! Here I have something in every room and window to remind me but that is all. A rosary hangs from a kitchen cupboard handle to hit me in the face when I open it.

Once my wife hung a photo in the bathroom. It was one of those well-known images showing Jesus knocking at the door and glowing in light in everything. I’m not sure if she ever caught the irony because I never mentioned it, but like they say nobody knows when He will come again so be prepared. I’d be like, “just a second Jesus … be right there.”

Warning! Attack Rosary zone…

I want you to know I laughed out loud at this…

That’s a good point, too.

It may be a good idea to try to sympathize with your mother a bit more. The way her devotional art raises her mind to heaven, and brings her comfort, is much more important than what your friend might think of her.
👍

Op, why don’t you ask your mum about her art, and take an interest in it. Use it as a chance to understand her more. The more you understand then the less embarrassed you will be.

Most people who have any faith are seen as ‘fanatics’ in society. I think that people with no belief are missing out.

To have belief in a world which prioritises material possessions and wealth is something to be thankful for. If you are concerned for her, pray for her. This will help your own heart to become sensitized towards her situation.

Your mum is more important than your friend’s reaction. Be happy that she is on a path towards our Creator and in His hands. And sometimes friends can surprise. Maybe it is your friend you don’t trust and maybe you could pray for your relationship with her or him.
