Is it wrong to share a bed with a girlfriend

Absolutely yes…you’re putting your self in a proximate occasion of sin if not a sin itself. Sharing a bed is reserved for a husband and wife.

It is very imprudent and yes, it could be an occasion of sin. It is not something you should do. It is not respectful of the virtues of purity or chastity. It is not respectful of your parents or the girl.

It is simply a bad idea and it can form bad habits.

Would you want your daughter “just sleeping” with a boy? No.

This. Under some extreme circumstance it could be fine, but not something one should plan on doing ahead of time. 🤷

Second

Actually, if you have to ask…then you probably know the answer.

I’d say yes it’s wrong. You’re closing in in temptation. I know my parents wouldn’t have liked the idea of me being in the same as my now husband. If it’s in a rare circumstance I’d say someone sleeps on the sofa or floor. That’s just me though. 🙂

It’s okay if both of you are not human. But you are.
It is foolish, and unfair to each others’ peace of soul and mind and your eternal souls.
It is not a loving thing to do to each other.
It is not love to put risk to another person’s true spiritual good.
May God bless you, Taylor

ditto to the above!

Unless the temperatures are so cold that someone might get frostbite or freeze if you don’t combine body heat–don’t combine body heat.

I mean, c’mon, you want anyone else “just sleeping with her”? One of the guys on your basketball team? One of the guys she works with? Would it make a difference if your sister slept with her instead of one of your brothers?

Be real, here. This isn’t arrangement ain’t never gonna be no ‘just sleepin’, dude.

This. Short of life and death, no way, buddy. If all else fails, be a man and take the floor.

Yup. Sinful.

And kind of obvious, right? Because unless one or both of you is weird, it’s NOT going to be “just sleeping” for long. God made us mating creatures, we tend to do that a lot.

For Catholics, the conscience will tell and it will always tell you not to put yourself in occasion of sin. Therefore: Don’t do it!

Would you free climb a 1000 meter high wall that you are not able to climb without a rope.

Put your rope around you, mate!!!..And I expect the same from you to tell me. I unfortunately had to learn the hard way and regret bitterly. Jesus, have mercy, have mercy, mercy, mercy, mercy,…

Well that is judgmental! and wrong! I once slept in a twin bed with my husband before we married and we are not weird, but we did not have sex. I think it is okay to do this if both parties are in agreement about what is going to occur. Some might say if both parties are in agreement about what is not going to occur. For someone to make the above statement is extremely rude. Further it puts humans on the same levels as animals, by not giving credit to humans. We can and do make decisions, while animals act on instinct. The above quote degrades those of us with morals. It also suggests that any time two people are in the same bed they will have sex. How ridiculous. Do you actually believe married couples, or even those living together, have sex every single night? People can choose to act appropriately no matter what the circumstance. So while it may be difficult for a GF and BF to sleep together without having sex, they certainly can. If either party thinks temptation will get the better of him then it should not be done. But lying next to someone in and of itself is not a sin.

Is it sinful if it is just sleeping?
No, it is still highly inadvisable

Wrong
Fr. Vincent Serpa:
Hi,

A near occasion of sin isn’t a sin but an occasion where one may be tempted. To put oneself in such a situation is imprudent, but not sinful in itself. However, if one deliberately puts oneself in such a situation in the hope of sinning, one has already sinned by willing to sin. Sin begins with the will to sin.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.

Well put Dakota and thanks for bringing in the quote from an apologist.

I slept in the same room with my now wife when we were dating and engaged because we had a long-distance relationship for awhile. So when she visited me or when I visited her, we shared the same room; my college dorm sure didn’t have living rooms with comfy couches! But I did have a futon and that’s where I crashed.

I do recall a couple times sleeping in the same bed before marriage but there were extenuating circumstances. My then-fiancee had to be out of her place for a couple of days and I didn’t have all of my furniture moved in to my new place.

Looking back on it I have to concede it was not the smartest idea of all time. Nothing happened so there’s no sin, but it still was not a great idea.

Sharing a bed isn’t wrong if you are both mature adults with self control and you are not deliberatley trying to fool yourselves by agreeing you won’t end up having sex…but secretly hoping you might just slip up

I agree with Dakota that assuming anyone sharing a bed is going to fall helplessly into mating is degrading to human beings! For some couples, sharing a bed or even sprawling our together on a sofa at the end of a hard day is the only time they get together to talk! It can actually lead to a greater trust and respect: it depends entirely on the circumstances and the people involved.

Self control is like any other discipline or skill - it can be worked on and some have more than others. If a man and woman who love one another are incapable of sharing a bed without having sex, then NFP would never work.

It is certainly not advisable to share a bed with someone you hardly know, or when drunk, or before you are absolutely sure that you have a solid and committed relationship and are both 100% in agreement about what you will and will not do when in the said bed.

Only you and your o/h know the level of commitment in your relationship and the limits of your self control and mutual respect are. Also, only you know why you are asking the question.

There are only 2 physical components necessary for a couple to have sex and a bed isn’t one of them.

Again - by no means am I saying everyone should do it - just that everyone should think deeply and honestly about their own motivation for wishing to share a bed and make sure they have agreed boundaries. If you can’t discuss the issue honestly and openly with your o/h, then you are in the wrong relationship all together!

:rolleyes:So, that could mean only about 1% of unmarried couples are perfectly capable of sharing a bed without puting themselves any nearer to sin than before - but it doesn’t mean everyone should be condemned or pre-judges either. I believe this is one of those situations where it is a matter for the conscience of the individual.

I want to stress the necessity to avoid magical thinking or mixing up societal mores with actual religious morality. Sleeping in the same bed does not make fornication. It offends a number of people’s sensibilities, which may be wrong but isn’t really a top concern. On the other hand, when it does actually put a strain or challenge on the couple’s ability to maintain their chastity, that’s wrong (near occasion of sin), and we should also “flee the appearance of evil” in general, so not act like we’re doing something evil while we aren’t really doing it.

I don’t really see anything wrong in a tired couple just dozing off on the couch in close proximity of each other or similar things. On the other hand, going to bed in the same bed by design day after day in normal situations (shower, brush teeth, lie down like the most normal thing ever) is not something I’d consider prudent, although even there, I would be against crying scandal or occasion where it doesn’t really need to be.

Shouldn’t even be in the same room…
Generally speaking this is true, but sometimes there really are just reasons for it. 🤷
I have slept in the same room twice with my boyfriend, and once even in the same bed. However, it was, each time, because of serious reasons, not a near occasion of sin for either of us, and had very very little chance of spreading scandal. (when we slept in the same bed there was actually zero chance of scandal. 🤷) Sleeping in the same bed (or room) should by no means be the norm, or even habitual, but sometimes it is allowable.

It is entirely likely that the OP does not know what “the limits of your self control and mutual respect are”. That would be the most likely thing in the world. After all, mutual respect does not go looking for a boundary to tread closely. Mutual respect does not chance unintentional violations of respect. Mutual respect does not leave foreseeable violations to chance.

Let us also visit this scenario: They sleep together once, and they realize before it is even morning that this is too much to face that temptation again. They didn’t “do anything”, but the frustration of “this far, but no farther” nearly drove them nuts. OK, so they’re never going to do it again. That history is itself a temptation and a frustration.

They are avoiding an easily-foreseeable and non-trivial difficulty if they avoid doing this. It would be foolish to put themselves in that position on the theory that they “know themselves”. Human history does not support that plan. There is a high statistical probability of an eventual crash. Don’t even let that one leave the runway, then.

OP: Just Don’t Do It.
