Is Jesus Christ and the Roman Catholic Church the only way to salvation?

The unity with the Roman Pontiff is about unity in doctrine. It does not make the other Catholic Rites “Roman”. This tendency to disregard Catholics from other rites by Latins is part of what keeps the church divided.
Oh Okay well i guess Im on the Latin side then. Not sure i know i follow the Pope and im Roman Catholic. But hey we still Love God and eachother so thats cool!

The Council of Florence (A.D. 1438-1445) From Cantate Domino — Papal Bull of Pope Eugene IV

“…It firmly believes, professes, and proclaims that those not living within the Catholic Church, not only pagans, but also Jews and heretics and schismatics cannot become participants in eternal life, but will depart “into everlasting fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels” [Matt. 25:41], unless before the end of life the same have been added to the flock; and that the unity of the ecclesiastical body is so strong that only to those remaining in it are the sacraments of the Church of benefit for salvation, and do fastings, almsgiving, and other functions of piety and exercises of Christian service produce eternal reward, and that no one, whatever almsgiving he has practiced, even if he has shed blood for the name of Christ, can be saved, unless he has remained in the bosom and unity of the Catholic Church.”

“The Church is One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic, and Roman: unique, the Chair founded on Peter. Outside her fold is to be found neither the true fold nor eternal salvation, for it is impossible to have God for a Father if one does not have the Church for a Mother.”
VEN POPE PIUS IX

“There is only one universal church of the faithful, outside which there is absolutely no salvation.”
IV Lateran Council

“It is a sin to believe there is salvation outside the Catholic Church!”
VEN POPE PIUS IX

“There is no salvation outside the Catholic Church. Anyone who resists this truth perishes.”
ST LOUIS MARIE DE MONTFORT

“It must be held as a matter of faith that outside the Apostolic Roman Church no one can be saved, that the Church is the only
Ark of Salvation, and that whoever does not enter it will perish in the flood.”
VEN POPE PIUS IX

“There is no entering into salvation outside of the Church, just as in the time of the Deluge there was none outside the Ark which denotes the Church.”
POPE JOHN PAUL II

“I profess that outside the Catholic Church no one is saved.”
POPE SYLVESTER II

“It is impossible to be joined to God except through Jesus Christ; it is impossilbe to be united to Christ except in and through the Church; finally, it is impossible to belong to the Church except through the bishops who are united to the Supreme Pastor, the successor of Peter.”
POPE JOHN XXIII

“The Catholic Church alone is the Body of Christ, of which He is Head and Savior. The “People of God” and the “Mystical Body of Christ” are one and the same thing, both of them designating the Church. Membership in the Church requires conditions other than Baptism alone; it requires identical faith and unity of communion, so that by means of the Catholic Church alone, which is the unrestricted instrument of salvation, is it possible to obtain the fulness of the means to salvation. Indeed, the Church is both a sure and an exclusive means of attaining salvation. We must always remember the unity of the Mystical Body outside which there is no salvation, for there is no entering into salvation outside the Church. Outside this Body, the Holy Spirit gives life to no one: those who are enemies to unity do not participate in the charity of Divine Life; those outside the Church do not possess the Holy Spirit. The entrance to salvation is open to no one outside the Church!”
POPE PAUL VI

The difference between these quotes (and there are many, many more)and the comments in this thread are that these quotes have “authority”. So, believe whatever you want.

However, if you are not Catholic, they don’t mean a thing.

JMCRAE by this statement then I would have to dismiss anything after John including what the ECFs had to say. This would include Transubstantiation, Doctrine’s of Mary etc. as they were not teachings of any of the Apostles. So then any documents that the Popes declared infallible have to be dismissed.

Thanks for confirming my position:)
Only in the case where they are promulgating new revelation. But when they are restating the obvious, and teaching us about the doctrines that were given to us by the Apostles (including the doctrine of Mary’s Immaculate Conception, and other doctrines that didn’t get into the Bible) then we also need to be listening to them, since they are the Successors of the Apostles, and it is to them that the Apostles transmitted their message, and they in their turn give it to us.

Oh…their meaning still stands, and is independent of a Protestant’s rejecting them. And Lucifer is quite pleased with your stand.
I never understood why protestants reject pretty much anything that comes from the Pope, then turn around and tell us they want unity, or how we are supposed to just ignore the comments made against him. The guy is a spiritual leader, regardless of rank and position, why can’t they see this and why can’t they learn from him?

At some point one has to conclude that the Protestant is being willfully or obstinately ignorant. Nothing remotely invincible. History and right reason disprove Protestantism on its very face to the objective mind, while anti-Catholic bigotry clearly destroys objectivity. No doubt there is also pride and self-love involved which keeps him attached to his “sola scriptura” mindset that permits him to twist Scripture to suit his own spiritual and moral predilections. Far easier than having a hierarchical church tell him what he must believe and how to live his life. In the end he will either respond to God’s Grace, or simply reject it.

I’m a Catholic, but I recognize the reality that what the Pope says has no meaning for a Protestant since they do not recognize his authority. Even some think he is the anti-Christ.

I think if the Protestant follows the Scriptures, lives a good life and follows Christ the best way they know how, their chance at salvation is just as great as a Catholic’s.

Agreed. They may not agree with his theology, but that doesn’t make wrong on a lot of issues.

They may feel the same about us Catholics. They are followers of Christ, just like us. They are Christians. Quit assuming just because you are Catholic and they are not that somehow you have a leg up on them. Heaven will be full of both Catholics and Protestants, as will Hell.

At the same time, I’ve learned much from the protestants and their leaders, it’s a two way street in my book personally.

Again, lots of worthless, yapping opinions without an ounce of authority to support any of it. A fair amount of heterodoxy no less.

Let the popes and saints speak:

“That the Mystical Body of Christ and the Catholic Church in communion with Roma are one and the same thing is a doctrine based on Revealed Truth. That we must nevessarily belong to the true Church if we are to attain everlasting salvation is a statement which some people reduce to a meaningless formula.”
POPE PIUS XII

“When we say that faith is necessary for the remission of sins, we mean to speak of the Catholic faith, not heretical faith. Without the habit of this faith, no man is justified.”
ST ALPHONSUS MARIA LIGUORI

“No one can depart from the teaching of Catholic truth without loss of faith and salvation.”
POPE PIUS XII

Does it matter what a pope says? What does the word of God say? Salvation is in Jesus(Acts 4:12). No where in scripture does it say the Roman Catholic church.

Remember, to a non-Catholic Christian, the quotes from the Popes you mentioned is nothing but worthless yapping, so bringing them up does not further enhance your argument to a Protestant.

I wasn’t directing the quotes to the Protestants. This seemingly endless dialogue has gone on for over 1000 replies, yet I doubt there have been any conversions as a result. The quotes are directed at the many heterodox opinions voiced by some
Catholics(?) here who misrepresent the Catholic Faith. So, I let the popes, saints, and councils do the talking. Though they may not like it, at least the Protestants here will see what the popes and saints have taught, and thereby know what the Church has always taught rather than having to rely on anonymous Catholics who don’t present Catholic truth.

i am just curious, are you refering to all the popes, or just a few?
