Is Liberal Catholicism Dead?

Sadly, no. Many American Catholics today, even the “conservative” ones, would have been considered wildly “liberal/progressive” by the standards of 50 years ago, yet they don’t even realize it. It’s a case of not seeing the forest for the trees.

What used to be taboo in mid-20th century Catholicism is pushed as the norm today. You only need to look at the battles in the Liturgy forum to see some examples (communion in the hand, etc.).

We can only hope that “liberal” Catholicism dies out, but in order for this to really mean anything, we’d have to undo the damage that the movement has wrought.

What are the latest subscription numbers of the National Catholic Reporter? I think that would be a pretty good indicator of the health of the movement.
…er…I was surprised to be able to access all content FREE on National Catholic Reporter, including their interview of Archbishop O’Brien of Baltimore, when he delivered an ultimatum to the Legionairies to be completely transparent in his diocese or he’ll throw them out!! Good for him. ANYway, I’ll never pay for content I can access free, so I think maybe the paper subscriptions don’t account for the total readership of NCR.

You’re worried about communion-in-hand? According to the following, liberal Catholics aren’t exactly disappearing, they’re being replaced by the just plain non-observant non-believing Catholics-in-name-only.

Regarding your posted article,
“Will the Son of Man find any faith at all upon the earth when He returns?”
Luke 18:8

Ah for the good old days when Catholics were discouraged from reading the Bible(only Father can understand it directly) and most had no interest in religious education beyond the good old Baltimore Cat. If the Church could get back to those days then there would be no questioning or descent and peace would cover the earth
The usual. Yes, they were all so bad in the past and we are all so correct today. I wonder where all those saints came from before 1962, must have been a fluke.

In 1962, many people had family Bibles. Catholics were more observant and more were living out their faith 7 days a week. I was there.

God bless,
Ed

Filius9993,

I am curious if you found out what you wanted. I read many posts of diverse opinion some insightful.
I just wanted to see what people viewed “liberal Catholicism” as and what their reaction toward the article would be. I also wanted to state that one’s political views (be they liberal or conservative) should not inhibit their loyalty to Catholicism or its morality… because, naturally, God comes before all material things. I loathe the evils that people make when they put the ideals of a political party above that of morality. It’s foolish and conformist.

I hadn’t expected this thread to start name calling of any sort, but it did. And it upsets me.

I am sure God used your post to enlighten and teach many of us. I am also sure it planted many seeds for the future. I certainly learned.

Bless you!
