I am of the opinion that an extreme of anything can become sinful.
Exactly Eamon, really it is neither conservatives or liberals whos views are sinful, but rather extremeist liberals and hyper conservative extremists. Both here distort the true message of God.
Alas…it is the French who have flair
oui oui, it is clearly the case. 😃 😛

I think just because the writer of the book is a Bishop, doesn’t make it the gospel. There are also liberal Bishops in the church. I’m always reading of people getting mad at their Bishop for being too progressive, such as Bishop Mahony in L.A. I imagine that there is just as much variety among Bishops as elsewhere.

I’m just using my own common sense on this one. I don’t think holding liberal opinions is a sin, any more than conservative opinions. For instance, some people think gay marriage is okay. I think they’re wrong. But, if they honestly think that, is that a sin? Who knows. I know some very fine people who think it’s okay.

It’s just the same as some people think our going to Iraq is terrible. They think people who advocate it are very bad. But, I think it’s okay if people hold different views on this, even though I think it’s wrong to go to Iraq. You can use the same argumant for the death penalty.

Before you jump to conclusions - read it cover to cover.

Then reserve your comments until you have done so.

I like the opening two paragraphs from the book.

***"In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since.

“Whenever you fell like criticizing any one,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.”.* **

Then, on the next page the narrator goes on to say:

**“And, after boasting this way of my tolerance, I come to the admission that it has a limit. Conduct may be founded on the hard rock or the wet marshes, but after a certain point I don’t care what it’s founded on”. **

I have my opinion and I’ve stated it. Thanks for your advise though. 🙂

Opinions should be founded on something substantial…

I believe I stated myself with clarity. I don’t believe holding liberal viewpoints is inherently sinful. I also think the title of the book is inflammatory and sensationalistic.

Is this a PC comment? I now understand where you are coming from.
PC comment? No, I don’t think you understand where I’m coming from, my friend. I really don’t. 😦 But, that’s okay. 😉

Eamon
I agree, and would add: For the orthodoxy challenged, all seems as hyper-conservativism and in need of progression.

Libero:
Liberalism a sin? Thats a bit stupid. Conservatives are not necesserially correct, the view that they hold won the debate two millenia ago. There is nothing to say that conservatism would win the debate today.

If liberalism is a sin then clearly a number of high ranking clergy members are also guilty.

Liberalism does not necesserially mean that one disagrees entirely with church teaching.

Nor that one disagrees at all.

Maybe someone should point out that the book in question was written in 1886, by a Spanish priest - and that what went by the name elsewhere, might not be quite the same, might indeed be very different, from the thing he called liberalism. Remarks which might be relevant to the conditions of the Church in Spain in the later 19th century can’t be applied without more ado to the whole Church at the same time or later. ##

Hi,
I just got off the phone with a good friend of mine. She’s a liberal and is probably holier than most people at my church. She’s not a Catholic. She grew up as a Mennonite and now is a non church goer.

She is a typical liberal in that she is pro-choice, pro-gay rights etc. She uses all the annoying politcally correct terminology for everything. We expressed our opinions on abortion one time and never discussed it again because we have so many other areas of commonality.

For one thing, she is an inspiring example of a truely caring person. She’s a social worker for Mental Health of our county. She piloted a program that truly helps kids with the most atrocious backgrounds and mental health/behavioural problems. She has an incredible heart and ability to help these kids.

She’s never been married, and lived with a man years ago, but has been chaste and single for over 10 or 15 years. She decided that she wanted a child, so 9 years ago she adopted a daughter from India, who was 8 mos old and living in a Catholic Orphanage there. She’s dedicated the past 9 years raising her girl, and is doing a great job. She’s a dedicated mom!

So what’s her big sin? According to the premise of this thread, she is sinful for some of her opinions. Well, she is one of the best people I know, doesn’t gossip, is loving in her actions to all people, and an uplifting person to be friends with who is a good influence on me. She’s a positive presence in this world. 🙂

Liberalism is not a sin - such a blanket statement as such seems very hateful and very unchristian.

Probably depends on your definition of “Liberalism” as I don’t think all Liberals even believe the same thing.

In general, is being wrong about something a sin?

That’s very true. Some people will call you liberal if you support a tax raise, or want to preserve the environment. Some people will call you liberal if you’re pro-choice. The possibilities are very diverse.

If we want to go to the extremes, then extreme conservatism is just as sinful as extreme liberalism (ex. people like Hitler and Mao).
