I know liturgical dance is not permitted in the West. Is litrugical gesturing allowed? What are the parameters if so?

Liturgical gesturing, although possibly a legitimately separate ‘discipline,’ sounds to me like a way of rewording dance in order to slip it in. If you ask me, we already have legitimate liturgical gesturing - the sign of the cross, genuflection, bowing, kneelling, standing, etc.

I think it is up to the Bishops of the individual Diocese.

How about the Liturgy done correctly? Is that permitted anymore? Or… 😉

Unfortunately, no. Thanks to the wonderful Traditional Catholics on these forums, I was able to dig up a copy of the Church’s instruction regarding lay involvement in the Mass.

We so grossly violate this that, regrettably, I feel it almost puts the American Church in schism. The worst part is that the only alternatives are actual schismatic groups.

Only three and a half more years before I can move to the United Kingdom. They are going so slowly…

I never heard of liturgical gestures, unless it means prayer posture such as kneeling or genuflecting. I agree with another poster who said it sounds like somebody is trying to sneak liturgical dance under the radar. The only liturgical gesture appropriate in the sanctuary by a layperson might be a sign language interpreter.

Not sure what is meany by liturgical gesturing either, but how about this: during the Creed for example, our priest will make all kinds of gestures, pointing to the people or to the Risen Christ depending on where we are in the Creed. I’ve never seen another priest do so…He also directs the altar servers to look at the choir during the alleluia…I thought we were to turn to the ambo in anticipation of the Gospel, but I don’t know what the GIRM directs.

The American Church has been in de facto schism for some 30 years now. I can’t speak for the United Kingdom, but it’s likely Americanism has infested many national churches, especially in predominately English-speaking countries.

Liturgical gestures… :nope:

Wow, what news, I wonder why the Church doesn’t know this yet you do?

My guess is that you are guilty of overgeneralization.

Who says the Church doesn’t know it? I’m not privy to the inner workings of the Holy See so I really can’t say one way or the other.

I’m sure I’m guilty of many things.

Can you give us an example?
Do you mean like when people bounce and “Lift up” their hearts?

Just last week I tangoed the gifts up to the table of celebration. And I wore a tank top, shorts and sandals. the presider, Bob took the gifts and danced them around the altar doing a dance he and the dance committee approved the night before. My nephew ran the projection screen. One parishoner named Jerry mimed the Eucharistic celebration. Our guest lecturer, Franny De Chico presented a great speech after the Gospel. She touched on how how the God herself said that women should be able to be presiders at the Holy Table of Celebration. Gary, my best friend’s life partner and he distributed the bread and wine along with their two little girls they adopted through a church funded adoption service. Valet parking remains at a nice donation of $5, which benefits the dance committee. I’ll see you all next week.

Could litugical gesturing refer to someone doing sign language for the hearing impaired while the priest celebrates Mass?

Hi Freeway…
only one thought comes to mind.

From 1 Tim. 6:
3. "Whoever teaches in anyother way, not holding to the sound doctrines of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching proper to true religion,
4. should be recognized as both conceited and ignorant, a sick man in his passion for polemics and controversy.
From these envy, dissention, slander, evil suspicions----
5. in a word, the bickering of men with twisted minds who have lost all sense of truth.
Such men value religion only as a means of personal gain."

From 2 Thess. 2:
10. "…by every seduction the wicked can devise for those destined for ruin because they have not opened their hearts to love the truth in order to be saved.
11. Therefore God is sending upon them a perverse spirit which leads them to give credence to falsehood,
12. so that all who have not believed the truth but have delighted in evildoing will be condemned."

Now we can enter into God’s Rest…
as we REST in our Catholic Baptism,

Come on, buffalo, you’re driving me nuts. Please tell us what you meant by “liturgical gesturing”.

I’m presuming he means things like the “slap me five” gesture some people make when they respond to “The Lord be with you…and also with you”
