hi Everyone,

I need some enlightenment and please forgive my ignorance… This has been bothering me lately… It seems to me that in today’s society, people aspire to do drugs, fornicate, abuse their bodies by getting drunk and partying hard, and get a good job to earn tons of money to buy clothes, cars, boats, and houses… Is this the meaning of living a good life? I feel like that people who don’t do these, do not fit in or would not be able to relate to people or would not be successful in their lives. The media and society somehow have instilled that a key to a good life is live like a rockstar… Then the mindset of ‘missing out’ is the worst feeling… But on the otherhand, I feel like there’s gotta be more to that!

The thing is, when this ‘rockstar’ people get old and decrepit, They would religiously go to church maybe it’s because they are ‘retired’ and would like to go to heaven… While some non-believers believe they would still go to heaven if such thing exists, so why not just live life to the fullest because there’s nothing to lose… Also, I’ve heard so many old people said to enjoy life while still young. If that’s the case, then we should just all abuse our bodies while we’re young and strong so we don’t miss out on life… Then become a devoted Christian in our later years when we can’t do those anymore…

Ok, I myself drink ocassionally…I don’t smoke, don’t do drugs, and don’t sleep around… I feel like I’m missing out if I don’t do these ‘social’ things. It seems like people who do those are more successful, happier, more contented, and have conquered their fears.

Thanks in advance for your (name removed by moderator)ut!

I am not enlightning your ignorance.
You know it all.
I think you are right.
You miss lung cancer for you do not smoke.
You miss an overdose for not taking drugs…
You miss a love and sex burnout, AIDS, syphilis, gonhorrea and an eternal mistrust of men…
People who do that are less successful, less happy, less contented. Some of them are in the tomb where you do not see them.
As in The Little Prince, why do you drink? - To forget!- To forget what? - To forget that I drink

You do the right thing…ocasional drinking, it lifts your spirits, you socialize, be careful to keep your eyes on your glass least anyone put there drugs, drink light drinks like wine not scotch or shots for you may drink more and less drunk.

why not run for money? As long as money is not your God! Look at the Faoundation of the Gates.

I don’t smoke, don’t do drugs, and don’t sleep around…
Good.
I feel like I’m missing out if I don’t do these ‘social’ things.
These things are social only because everybody loves participating in sin together so they don’t feel as bad. Collective guilt lessens personal guilt. Don’t partake in their sin. You are missing out on sin — which is a good thing. You are not missing out on being social. Find other people who don’t do those things. You’ll find some eventually. If you don’t, it’s the cross you have to bear for the glory of Christ.
It seems like people who do those are more successful, happier, more contented, and have conquered their fears.
On the contrary, in fact, these people are the most fearful and cowardly. They cannot face reality so they hide themselves in collective sin of losing ones reasonableness and indulging in things that make them “forget” the real world. They are putting on a façade, and I know it because I have been there.

Christ is demanding. Christ is totalizing. Christ expects perfection. Christ expects change. Christ will give us a cross. Christ wants us to die for ourselves and live for Him. That is what people trapped in sinfulness are afraid of.

Everyone does not live to an OLD (retired) age.
Do not tolerate sin. Do not commit sin.

If you are over age 15, read your “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition”, and a “Catholic Bible”- starting with the New Testament.
If you are a teen, read “YOU CAT”, the Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Then read other books that will help you become a Saint.

We are only on earth a short while; eternity is forever.

It seems like people who do those are more successful, happier, more contented, and have conquered their fears.
I think you have it backwards.

A theory I float from time to time, although I know it can be construed as one heresy or another if taken too far, is that following the commandments isn’t punishment or giving anything up. It is better to live your life according to the commandments and in every instance will make you happier for having done so. Not following the commandments isn’t fun or exciting, it makes your life miserable.

I think you’re getting your idea of “today’s society” from MTV…real life, grown up people – including us non-believers – very frequently “aspire” to significantly more than partying. Things like love, friends, family, art, creativity, community, and making career achievements are all things valued by people.
I feel like I’m missing out if I don’t do these ‘social’ things. It seems like people who do those are more successful, happier, more contented, and have conquered their fears.
Well, I don’t know what to tell you. It’s not an all-or-nothing situation. If you get drunk every now and again on a Friday night or smoke with your friends once a month or even – gasp – have a sexual encounter from time to time, it doesn’t mean that you have to devote every waking minute of your life to living a “party lifestyle.”

You can live a meaningful, fulfilling life full of family, friends, love, art, community, etc…and still indulge occationally in things you enjoy doing. I would say that if “partying” occupies all of your time or gets in the way of other goals you have, then yeah, I would say that it would be smart to balance out your activities, but I would say the same if work was occupying all your time or hobbies were occupying all of your time.

The key to a happy life really is balancing the different things you want to do. Now, of course, if you don’t want to drink, party, etc…then that’s a different story. Don’t, and stop caring what other people might think.

Good.

This. Great post overall.

See Proverbs 24:19

bible.cc/proverbs/24-19.htm

It is not wrong to achieve things but we must ask God to guide us in all things. One wealthy Catholic told people he plans to give away his fortune when he dies. He knows he cannot take it with him. And the Bible tells us much about how to conduct our lives. As a young Catholic, I was taught restraint in what I said. I was taught to be modest, but the Bible tells us, “let others praise you.” And being humble after being praised. I was taught the value of honesty and being regarded as trustworthy. I was taught sex was reserved for marriage.

A party had a beginning, a middle and an end. The goal was not to get wasted. Yes, a few drinks were had but they had meaning. To celebrate moderately and to toast others. Not drinking for the sake of getting drunk. Illegal drugs were right out.

Peace,
Ed

Hello outatime
hi Everyone,

I need some enlightenment and please forgive my ignorance.
No apologies necessary.
This has been bothering me lately… It seems to me that in today’s society, people aspire to do drugs, fornicate, abuse their bodies by getting drunk and partying hard, and get a good job to earn tons of money to buy clothes, cars, boats, and houses… Is this the meaning of living a good life? I feel like that people who don’t do these, do not fit in or would not be able to relate to people or would not be successful in their lives. You’re right. There is more to life.

People have always looked to make themselves bigger than other people. When that desire becomes indulgent, they’ll always look for the next thing to make them feel superior in some way; whether it’s money, loads of sex, drugs, alcohol, it’s all the same in a sense that they’re trying to control what they think creates happiness.

But it’s an empty cop out, and believe me, I’d say most of those people are afraid to look small. Like you said, sex, alcohol, drugs, money will lose its appeal, and then you start chasing a new thing. You can control proper happiness to attain it, to an extent, but it’s got to be based on something that actually scratches the surface, not “I want to impress everybody.” But if it’s in your means, it’s easier to indulge in those things, and get a quick fix than to realise the world doesn’t revolve around you, and what you need to do about it.

It’s understandable you want those things while you can get them. But all you’ll get from weed is a hit. All you’ll get from hard-core drinking is drunkenness. All you’ll get from casual sex is sex you could have anyway if you were married and didn’t have to worry about accidental pregnancy, STIs, or emotionally-imbalanced girls. All you’ll get from money are bills. 🙂

When we put those things (with the exception of drugs) in the proper framework, though, they can make life good.
