i knew someone was going to give me that line.
what does that mean God is Love?

what need we have of religion if we have love,
which is God. if you followed all the rules of
your religion to a T, but you did not have
love in your heart, do you still go to heaven?

i think love is a force greater than religion.
religion is love, it is as perfect love as humans can give, since it is given to the Creator, the source of all love, in response to His love for us.

can you explain that?

religion is love?
i don’t know about that one.
history books tell me otherwise.

Our religion is from God - if we all followed His laws this would be a much better world, as we’d all be doing His will to do & be our best, according to His plan for our lives - remembering always to give Him thanks and praise…

However, unfortunately some people do not want to adhere to God’s laws. It has pretty much always been that way, & will continue until Christ comes again.

Without God there would be no such thing as love. Love is a meaningless statement apart from religion. It becomes superfluous. Just like any other transcendental term(truth, freedom, justice and etc.). For you to give love a high place in your philosophy is to posit a specific god as true.

If you mean Love as Agape, then you are correct. If you mean Love = Eros, then the answer is no. Love as Agape has been demonstrated perfectly by Jesus who sacrificed his life for his followers, not the other way around.

It would help if you defined your terms, because I do not understand what you mean by “love” or “religion” in this thread.
yes. mah bad.

yes love as in agape. love for one’s
children, parents, wife/husband, humanity, nature,
a sunny day, a rainy day, stars… etc.

religion as in the dogmatic teachings of an organised
church/temple/etc. religious beliefs, books, scriptures,
rules… all that, i say is second to love.

Your definition of religion is IMHO flawed. Religion is the relationship between a man and his God. The word religion should never be used pejoratively. Likewise, any relationship with God is organized as opposed to disorganized. Religion is spoken of by James in his epistle [see James 1:26-27].

The beliefs, rules, etc. all flow from the relationship that we have with God. All human relationships have rules and these relationships are but a glimpse of the ultimate relationship that we should have with God.

I agree that if we do not love God and our neighbor, we will not go to heaven. Faith without love of God is worthless and void. If we do not love God it is because we love ourselves and place ourselves before Him. This is a form of idolatry.

Please, please, please - don’t knock religion because it is organized - the opposite of organization is chaos. No one walks into their place of business & says they’re not going to follow the requirements, rules, & people in charge because it’s too organized - that’s nonsense.

Well, the agape love as defined above would be for one’s children (baptised in the Church) - from parents (married in the Church) - fellow man (the community of the Church) rain, sun, stars, etc. (created by the Creator)… all these gifts (including the invisible gift of grace) we are to continually thank our Lord for…

To revere the gift but forget the Giver is a form of idolatry - which is strictly forbidden by God, although He leaves us free to accept or reject Him.

regarding religion, there’s a difference between
finding one’s own organization and going strictly with
someone else’s template.

umm… gonna skip 2nd paragraph. i’m talkin
bout the gift of love, not the gift of children,
rain, sun and stars.

yes i revere love. everyone revered love
before religion maybe the world will be a better place.
did god create jesus so jesus could help god?
did god give us love so we could love god?
me thinks god gave us love so we could love
one another and the things around us.

I was using your definition of love from here:
yes love as in agape. love for one’s
children, parents, wife/husband, humanity, nature,
a sunny day, a rainy day, stars… etc.
Please correct me if I’m wrong - you are talking about a love, or appreciation for these things, right? And if so, what is wrong with taking the time to tell God, ‘Thank You’ for all the gifts He’s given us?

Love, in my opinion, is a decision to put someone else’s needs above my own. If I love my child, I do for him even if it is difficult for me. I sacrafice my wants for his. If I love soemone, I do for them, perhaps even to my own detrement, if need be. Yes, that is more powerful than a religion created by men.

My religion, however, was created by God. In fact, He loved us so much He sent his only son to die that we may live. I follow Him because he has shown me this love. Because of this love, I love others even when it is hard to do.

The opposite of love is not hate, it is indifference. If I do not care what happens to you, there is no love for you in my heart. Even with hate, your state is important you me. Love is more than an emotion.

In that case using the term “greater” in comparing the two confuses me. Because love is only possible with the grace of God. It is not possible for man to love apart from Him. God wants you to reciprocate love by obedience. His command was to follow Him. That means also becoming part of His Body, the Church. Love and religion are compliments. One leads to the other and vice versa.

Can the greatest commandments possibly describe God?

God loves all that he is with all his heart, soul, mind and strength.
God loves each and everyone of us as he loves himself…

Can God love us more than he loves himself?

Some thoughts to test the power of the greatest commandments.

In the spirit of searching for God’s love.
