is lust a mortal sin?

I just went to confession and I forgot to confess lust
but i confessed being impure and putting myself in the occasion of sin…

I was told that this is like explaining lust so i really did confess it and don’t have to acknowledge it the next time i am at confession because i already acknowledged it but just didn’t say the actually word.

is lust a mortal sin? if so did i confess it?
i’m confused…

i feel like i’m being scrupulous.

I’ve always wondered, what’s the difference between lust and appreciation…or maybe better, where does appreciation end and lust begin?

The answers you’ll get here will range from the very conservative “yes, any sexual thoughts or intents outside of marriage are mortally sinful” to the more benign, “God gave us our sexuality and it is good, so it is normal to have thoughts that are sexual in nature. Whether they are mortally sinful depends on whether they are malicious, and you had an intent to act on them”

From what you said, the fact that you confessed what you perceive to be a disordered sexual thought or impulse would cover the idea that you acted lustfully. My suggestion is to go ahead with your life and next confession, bring it up with your priest.
And, speaking directly to a priest is preferable as there are a range of opinions you’ll get when you toss a question like this out to the general population in the pews.

Christ said, “if a man looks at a woman with lust in his heart, he has already sinned…” That’s a tough one. As I said, appreciation is one thing, malice is another. Each of us has to answer that one for ourselves.

And yes, it does sound like you are being a bit overly scrupulous, but that’s just…

Any sins you honestly forget are absolved in confession.

When the priest says, “I absolve you in the name of the Father…”, he is absolving you of ALL your sins.

The only way a sin is not absolved is if you DELIBERATELY omit it.

So, relax, you are forgiven. You just need to mention any forgotten sins in the next confession.

Also, confessors have generally told me thoughts are not sinful unless you actively encourage and dwell on them. A passing sexual thought that you don’t encourage and try to fight is no sin at all. Mere appreciation or recognition of a woman’s attractiveness is also not sinful.

To be “lust” thoughts really need to descend to an active thought process of “I’d like to do … with her.” “Wow she’s hot!” is not a sinful thought.

reginaangelorum! Wonderful username:thumbsup: Mayhaps you are being wonderfully scrupulous! You care, for sure. That’s great:thumbsup: Keep on keeping on, never give up! Without the Baltimore Catechism available, I don’t know how to answer but that lust is like a lit match at the gas station. The follow-up is the real disaster. The temporal effects may/could be life changing. Hope you have good success avoiding the temptation and occasion of this sin in the future. You can do it! (with the help of the Holy Spirit) It is a wonderful example for the rest of us to know of your caring and going to confess to a priest. I pray the Rosary while driving to and fro work and end it with the Act of Contrition: …I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins and to amend my life, Amen. It is, but I think you confessed it. “Being impure” seems like detail enough, but I always try to use the actual word (even though it’s so hard to say!) “lust” when I confess it.

dove51, Short and helpful! Maybe off on a tangent, lust being what it is…just what is lust? I feel that those of both genders are capable of lust but to me lust, generically is wanting for something which is not wholesome. This may be power, wealth or a third helping at a meal. Queen of (the) angels/reginaangelorum reminds me of Mary, who by our teaching was not in a sinful state. Bless you all for wholesome seeking of/for God’s will!👍 Colmcille

Lustful thoughts are never good. If the thought of lust came into your mind and you didnt want it there then its not your fault. some of the holiest people in the world fight with lustful thoughts. its not the lust thats the real sin, its what you do when lust comes into your head. if it happens again, say a Hail Mary, and ask her to keep your thoughts clean.

When your tempted by lust you should always try to see how you ended up in that situation and try to never let it happen again. before my conversion i was always falling into lust because i was going out partying and drinking all the time. i was never going to stop falling living that lifestyle.

Remember, you have two wolves inside you, one that fights for purity and one that fights for lust. all you need to do is feed the pure wolf with mass prayer and confession and the other wolf will be dead real quick.
a life of prayer cannot live with a life of lust. one will live and one will surely die. you just have to make sure the right one wins.

As a teenager, I find myself saying “Dang, she is hot!” quite a lot. Lying isn’t good, so truthfully I sometimes ask close friends “would you do her,” which is much more synonymous to “do you think she is hot?” than “do you want to have premarital intercourse with her?”

I admire and appreciate and as an unselfish act I wind up the old saddle (I can hear the gasps)

I don’t find anything wrong with it (i still hear gasps)

consider this, one day im sure you will like to get married, and im sure you can think into the future and agreee that the girl you will marry is out there walking to school or to the mall and hanging out with friends, now, would you be all that happy with some guy making rude comments to his friend about your future bride, saying things like “She’s hot”, “would you do her”! I do not know the personality traits of most of the girls that I think are “hot” so how could you say I objectify them? Those aren’t rude comments, but rather signs of respect and appreciation. I agree; everyone is God’s children. God truly did bless these girls with a fine appearance.

your objectivying them because you are focusing on the physical side of these women. i can imagine that if i had a sister and a guy was talk to her the way you are then i would be very upset with that guy. a woman is not there for your viewing pleasure.

you can appreciate women by respecting them for not just a body but a woman that might not be too happy that you are saying the things you have said.

If impure thoughts pop into your head but you do not dwell on them then that is not a sin. If you do dwell on them then thats a grave sin.

CCC 2351 Lust is disordered desire for or inordinate enjoyment of sexual pleasure. Sexual pleasure is morally disordered when sought for itself, isolated from its procreative and unitive purposes.

Sorry but, “Would you do her?” and “Do you think she’s hot?” do not have the same meaning. I would guess this issue here has to do more with peer pressure and the environment you are in. I can see most of your non-religious buddies using the “Would you do her?” line, and of course the correct and cool thing to do is to use the same language. NOT!

You need to understand that this sort of language is demeaning to all females. You should also be man enough to step up to the plate and be different. Set an example by not falling into the trap of being just like everybody else.

Fear of hell is not scrupulosity!

Matthew 5:28 “But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

Adultery is certainly a mortal sin! The ONLY way to be certain is to mention it at your next reconciliation. It’s just that simple. The only thing you have to lose is eternity in flames!

i sometime go a whole day fighting against temptation when it comes to lustful thought. i dont act on them but sometimes it really makes me say to myself Why doesn’t it go away, why am i thinking this way. Sometime a person who i know i would be talking to thoughts just come and i wonder why i can not get rid of them once and for all.

i feel that i am really fighting temptation but i really have problems when i dont know if i’m thinking them or they are temptation. you know if it is my fault that i am getting these thought or not. A daily problem i face and most likly you all face as well. God bless you all and my we all get the graces of pure love in our hearts and may Jesus always be beside us helping us with our problems, weaknesses, difficulties and temptations and may we thank God for his patence and mercy and love.
