Martin Luther was excommunicated. The Church teaches that anyone in this state is in mortal sin. Anyone who dies with mortal sin on their souls goes to Hell. Therefore, Martin Luther is in Hell.

What do you think?

Not necessarily. We cannot read the state of his heart right before death, so we cannot know what he understood, what sin he was culpable for, nor if he repented of any sin before his death.

We had a thread about this a month or so ago. Basically, the Church cannot know the final judgment of anyone. We don’t know what happened to Martin Luther and so any response to the question would merely be speculation.

I guess I would have to ask the source of this statement before I could reply to your syllogism.

The Church doesn’t declare anyone to be in Hell. Objectively, without mitigating circumstances, the sins of Martin Luther (heresy, schism, among others) would end him up in Hell if he died unrepentent of them. What only God can judge is whether he repented or not and whether or not there were mitigating circumstances. Remember the words of Jesus and don’t condemn lest you be condemned.

I agree with everyone else here. I cannot judge where he is with absolute certainy. I can say this: If he didn’t repent before he died, presuming there were no mitigating factors, and he did indeed die in a state of retroactive mortal sin (Heresy and Schism), then he is probably being roasted alive by Satan and his angels. 👍

Let’s just say that after my death, if the first person I were to meet was Martin Luther, I’d be afraid. I’ve be very afraid!

If I was a betting man, I’d place my bets on “Hellfire and Brimstone”.

I thought that in an aparition of Mary, she said Luther IS in hell. I’m not sure which one; perhaps even it’s one that the Church doesn’t recognize as legit & I know as Catholics we can give or take the approved aparitions, but…if it’s a legit aparition…and Mary said it…

Whilst it certainly is nice to feel safe in the knowledge that any one who questions the Catholic church is immidiately sent to hell, to endure an eternity of suffering in fire and brimstone - I have my doubts…

I don’t care what our church said about him - our church is made of humans, we are all flawed, and most of us are hypocrites - God is the only judge and the only authority as far as I am concerned.

My God is a merciful one, and one who recognises the need for forgiveness, and also sees that Martin Luther had good intentions, achieving some good through his actions.

What’s your God like?

Martin Luther left the Church which is a mortal sin. If he repented before he died he would be saved. If he didn’t he would be condemned. These are the choices but only God knows whether he repented or not.

Only God is the one with the authority to say whether someone goes to hell…

Do you think he sits in heaven and judges people by the rules which the humans of the Catholic church have invented?

I don’t - he is God, nobody knows him - I wont claim that I know what fate he chooses to bring upon his children.

Actually, he was a deranged individual and not entirely culpable for his crimes. Therefore, divine justice condemned him to walk the Earth until the end of time, thinking about what he did. He now runs a 7/11 in Trenton. He sold me a Slurpee.

What a punishment indeed.

I have no doubt that Luther is burning in hell.
Aren’t you the eternal optimist.

We will know one day, why assume the worst?

I don’t think (but could be wrong) that God outlined what constitues a ‘mortal sin’ and I am relitavely confident he did not comment that if a person is excommunicated from the Catholic Church then they will be in hell…

Only God knows the state of Martin Luther’s heart and his intent. If his intent was to bring down the Church because of pride over his theological disagreements with the Chruch. Well then that would be a mortal sin, but if Martin Luther felt he was doing God’s will and fixing a seriously flawed system, how could that be considered a mortal sin as the Catholic Church teaches us what a mortal sin is?

In the end God will judge Martin Luther not the Catholic Church, not a Pope, not us a Parishoners’.

Actually the notion of mortal/venial sin is not only biblical, but is extremely logical.

If you are interested, i can PM you some very good stuff on it. Not your usual CA stuff either. 🙂

In Christ.
