Is Mary the Queen of Heaven?

This seems to me to be an attempt to scribe to heaven and to Mary a romanticized concept that really only applies to life in this temporal finite world. It is dangerous to subscribe earthly concepts to life in union with the Most Holy Trinity. While it is a very appealing concept we cannot begin to understand what life will be like in Heaven and I therefore believe it is unwise and even misleading to ascribe earthy concepts to Heaven and the Beatific Vision. I was told when I was little to imagine Heaven as the best it could possibly be and was promised that it would be even better than that. Ascribing titles and positions to Mary seems a bit pointless since only God can know for sure what He has prepared for those that love Him. Earthly titles and concepts will not apply.
Do you believe that Jesus is King of heaven and earth?

Heaven is referred to as the Kingdom of Heaven, of which Christ is King. Even if these are “earthly” concepts, seems to me that Heaven has a kind of monarchy if Christ is King of Heaven. And, in line with Jewish tradition, Mary, being the Christ’s mother (and therefore the King’s mother), that makes her the Queen.

What title does God the Father have in heaven? Jesus sits at the right hand of God the Father (yet they are one…confusing……anyways), so where does Mary sit?

Did Mary become Queen when she consented to being the Mother of God, at the moment of miraculous conception of Jesus, or after Assumption into heaven?

Randy Carson.

Thanks to you and others for doing all this great homework! Very inspiring, keep up the great work.

God bless.

I say, “Yes,” and here’s why:

The Establishment of Jesus’ Kingdom and Royal Court

Let’s begin by establishing a scriptural basis for accepting Jesus as King.

Luke 1:31–33
And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there will be no end.

Jesus inherits David’s throne, and Mary becomes Queen Mother. Support for the principle of the Queen Mother in the House of David is found clearly in the following passages:

1 Kings 2:19
When Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah, the king stood up to meet her, bowed down to her and sat down on his throne. He had a throne brought for the king’s mother, and she sat down at his right hand.

Since Solomon had MANY wives, none of them would be queen. In fact, it was his mother that sat on the throne. This idea is also evident in the book of Jeremiah:

Jeremiah 13:18
18 Say to the king and to the queen mother, “Come down from your thrones, for your glorious crowns will fall from your heads.”

From these two passages, we can see that the mother of the king held the title of Queen in the Davidic kingdom. We also know that Mary is the Queen of Heaven from the following:

Revelation 12:1-2
1A great and wondrous sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. 2She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth.

Since the writer goes on to say that the woman gave birth to a son who would rule the nations, we can conclude that the woman wearing the crown in heaven is the Mother of Jesus, Mary.

I see.

And this bothers you because…?

I demonstrated that the Early Church Fathers saw Mary as Queen…whether any of them actually used the Hebrew word, Gebirah, which means essentially the same thing, seems like petty nit-picking.
What bothers me is the obsession with dogmatizing everything and taking everything in a simplistic manor. It is a distortion of Christianity.

Half the quotes speak of her as queen, the other half speak of her as the mother of Jesus or some other title. Calling Mary lady isn’t the samething as calling her queen. Secondly, the fathers didn’t see this as an official position as you do. It was a form of praise to call her the queen of every creature.

None of the fathers or saints thought in terms of the queen mother or gebirah if you wish, yet now it is trendy to take it as the next dogmatic argument.

The moment that Jesus became king, Mary automatically became Queen Mother.

“Half of the quotes speak of her as queen.”

Yes, they do. Thank you for that.

As you know, in modern parlance, commoners are not referred to as “ladies” or “gentlemen”, these are terms reserved for nobility. Yeah, I’ll speculate that things were very similar in times gone by. The Fathers understood kings and queens far better than we moderns who live primarily in democracies devoid of monarchical influences. Their whole world was governed by kings and emperors.

For reasons just noted, I venture that ALL of them did. But you already conceded that half of the quotes DO speak of Mary as queen…

I did meet your 1990 standard, though. :yup:

What title does God the Father have? Retired King who passed on all authority to His Son?
When I was a Protestant pastor years ago I did a series on the “titles of God” as used in the Old Testament. There are many.

If you separate the earthly from the Heavenly, you might as well throw out your entire Old Testement, Leviticus in particuar.

In terms of monarchial titles, God the Father is who?

(Sort of unrelated, but possibly related, does Catholicism teach that there is a “hierarchy” among the Holy Trinity? I think both the RCC and OC believe that God the Father is the principle source of God the Son and the Holy Spirit, but does that imply a “rank”? Or am I thinking of a heresy?)

What does “Queen of Heaven” really mean? We don’t worship her. We pray to her, but we pray to many saints. I guess my question boils to what sets Mary apart from any other saint, and what does she do as queen?
The first thing that comes to my mind is sinless. I never heard of a Saint that was sinless.

The next thing is she was saved from sin at the moment of her conception, so bluntly sin never touched her. Ever.

The next thing is the LOVE not only a Mother has for her Son but the LOVE a Son has for his Mother. No one can compete with that. She carried him in her womb.

If you love you Mother and she asks something of You, would you not try hard to grant her the request?

The bible says she is BLESSED among woman. That seems to me to say kinda above all woman. 😉

The word of God say all nations will call me Blessed? I don’t recall calling any Saint BLESSED?

I do tend to agree.

However how are we now in our earthly concepts which I think are our temporal bodies with temporal senses supposed to do? I think one needs to address Mary in a way that is not worship, yet is something beyond a reasoning void of the temporary bodies and sense we have. The Old Testament and New Testament are FILLED with with human concepts and feelings and emotions of crying out to God and thanking God and sinning against God.

We all are so lacking even in Romans12:1 with God. Yet this in a very REAL way involves the temporal and in fact is the ONLY way for 99% of all of us. (IMHO)

Again I tend to agree with you, but look at these as human honors placed on BVM in ways to honor her place in heaven as best we are able to. Many of the other terms used as “Ark”, new Eve, and I guess a few others I can UNDERSTAND the concept but to me it is irrelevant (no more or less detracted from) to my feelings about BVM. We all are unique. Even the 1.2 or more (including CINO) Catholics have unique feelings and reasonings. None are what will be in Heaven although the honor of the Queen of Heaven will be and whatever that honor is to be.

According to what I have read in the NT, I don’t recall that JESUS treated Virgin Mary in any special way!, I see all those special titles came later on!

The Son of God became incarnate in Mary and thus Mary became the Mother of God and of Jesus. That seems to me to be pretty special. What other woman can claim the title Mother of God? I’m also pretty sure Jesus was aware of the commandment “honor thy father and mother.”

He went to a wedding in Cana with her. How many guys today would do that with their moms especially when some of their buddies were there? 😛

Obviously, we can ascribe to the whole Trinity the title of King. For the three persons of the Trinity are all God. We ascribe the title King of the Universe to Jesus not only because He is God but also because He is the head of the human race and by His incarnation, passion and death he redeemed the human race and reconciled the world to God. Jesus also inaugurated the Kingdom of God on earth and fullfilled the Old Testament prophecies concerning Him and the eternal kingdom He would establish.

Concerning the Trinity, the three persons are all God and equal to each other, otherwise they wouldn’t all be God. However, God the Father is the origin of the Trinity. God the Son is begotten by the Father from all eternity and the Holy Spirit proceeds from both the Father and the Son from all eternity.

Hi, believer, seems to me Jesus incarnate of the Virgin Mary, chose her to illumine, God the Father the Son and the Spirit to mankind. We have evidence of this in her own words.
Luke 1: 46 And Mary said, ""My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed;

God Bless
