Dear friend it is NOT a dumb question; HOWEVER if you think your sins are forgive JUST because Jesus Loves us; your dangerously WRONG.
Jesus personally Instituted the Sacrament of KNOWN forgiveness of our sins; the SACRAMENT of Penance and that is the only GOD-APPROVED manner for our sin forgiveness;
PLEASE READ these Bible passages carefully and prayerfully
1John.1 Verses 8 to 9
[8] If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
[9] If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1John.5 Verses 16 to 17
[16] If any one sees his brother committing what is not a mortal sin, he will ask, and God will give him life for those whose sin is not mortal. There is sin which is mortal; I do not say that one is to pray for that.
[17] All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin which is not mortal.
Ones Venial sins can be forgiven at the start of Mass; but ALL Mortal sins in nature and quantity MUST be Sacramentally forgiven to reunite one with Christ.
John.20 Verses 19 to 23
[19] On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” [20] When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. [21] Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you."
[22] And when he had said this, **he breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. **
[23] If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
This dear friend is NOT an option it is one of the Seven Sacraments instituted by Jesus the Christ; and IS to be OBEYED.
As to your second question: ABSOLUTELY!
May God guide your path,
Patrick
