Is Our Universe Infinite?

If one wishes to think of the Big Bang as the beginning of the universe, think of it this way: The universe begins with a singularity, all the matter/energy of the universe crammed into a subatomic size space.

But space and time begin simultaneously with the Big Bang, and both expand. As space expands the universe becomes ‘cooler’ and less dense, enabling atoms, molecules, and galaxies to form. The expansion of space may continue indefinitely, or, as was once considered a possibility but now seems to have fallen out of favor, the expansion might slow and contraction occur, resulting in a big crunch, with space again contracting to a singularity.

I was reading the Heaven and Hell topic which made me wonder just how big the universe is. I Googled it and found a topic written in the summer of 2017 and it says the universe is probably infinite in size.

Since God is infinite, how can the universe be infinite?
God is eternal. No beginning and no end.
The universe is infinite. God created it and it will never end.
Our souls are immortal. God creates them at conception but they will live forever in eternity, either heaven or hell.

Catholicism is infallible Doctrine, the Wisdom of God.

woooooo how dare you suggest that the Bible or Catholicism might be wrong, i am stunned you havent been shunned or had your thread flagged.

If the universe is finite or infinite it really doesn’t matter, as humans we are stuck to living on our planet, visiting the Moon and maybe one day setting foot on a baren rockey planet called Mars, everything else is just shooting sattelites into space to beam back info and taking pictures with space telescopes. So for me, what does it really matter if the universe is infinite or not, either way I personally do not have the means or the life time to explore it and I do not see how either answer can change anything on the matters of faith.

I just worry about my refound faith. I have OCD. Get over it.

So the fact the Universe might be infinite in size doesn’t contradict our faith and Bible?

i have no clue what redound faith is, i never asked if you have OCD , I didn’t mean to offend you it was just a response and my own view point on things, i have no clue why you would take offense to a response when you asked for peoples (name removed by moderator)ut. take care.

I know. It’s annoying to have to do that. Another thing with this new format is when starting a new thread, if there’s another thread with the same title, even an old one, you can’t use it, and have to change your title.

That depends on what you mean by “the Universe.” If you mean the Observable Universe, then no, the Observable Universe has a clearly defined boundary. If you mean “all material creation,” then the answer is we don’t know.

Did you read my link? According to them, they think the Universe is infinite in size.

I’m going to jump in to say that there would be no contradiction or real paradox if God had created (or perhaps did create) a universe with a timeline extending from an infinite past to an infinite future. It makes perfect sense because God exists outside of time. He created time, so he can make it any way he likes and do whatever he likes with it.

I try to avoid speaking as if there was a time “before” or “until” the universe “was” created. It is clearer to say that the universe – and time – “is” created, or simply that it exists by God’s will and according to his design.

This is hypothetical though. I do not dispute the science regarding Big Bang and expansion of the universe.

I’m not talking about the Universe having a timeline that goes to the infinite past. I’m talking about the size or expanse of the universe being infinite, as in going on forever into the distance.

They don’t, indeed can’t, know anything about what’s beyond the cosmological horizon. By definition, the cosmological horizon is the distance beyond which no information can reach us.

Am I even reading those last two paragraphs correctly? I think it says that NASA suggests that the “Universe is infinite in extent”… and doesn’t that mean that NASA is saying the Universe is infinite in size?

I’m going with the theory that it began almost 14 billion years ago and has since been expanding at the speed of light. That would make it almost 28 billion light years wide, as of now. It may expand forever though, in which case it is, or will be, infinite in size or expanse.

That’s what I think, too. Now, I’ve gotten various opinions on this, but, does an infinite Universe conflict with the Bible, God or Catholicism?

It doesn’t follow that because one can not see how far the universe goes therefore it is infinite. That is like saying because I can’t see all the way around the earth therefore the earth must be infinite in size. Of course we know the earth is not infinite. If the universe is expanding how could it be infinite in size since what would it be expanding into? Since the universe would already exist in any space it could possibly expand into.
