There are Catholics who live with and receive Jesus in the Eucharist but never really know him. This is seen when many walk by a tabernacle without acknowledging His presence. For some, it is like being married but never really knowing who their spouse is, either because they are too self-obsessed, or don’t make time to pay attention to Jesus (to listen, feel, or observe), or they just don’t care.
I would not go so far as to say Protestants have an advantage over Catholics because they focus on the “personal relationship.” They do not acknowledge the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist at all, which leads me to the conclusion that they only know Him in part. How can you say that you “know” Jesus if you don’t even recognize Him when you are in His presence?
I have entered a few places where Jesus’ Eucharistic Presence was in the room next door without me having prior knowledge and I would feel a difference, a calming peace, a warmth of spirit and later be validated that Jesus was literally near me in the other room. Because of frequent visits to the tabernacle, I am accustomed to what I feel when in His Presence, so that most times I can perceive Him in unexpected places.
I would argue that anyone who knows and recognizes Jesus’ Eucharistic Presence has a very intimate and personal relationship with Him.
