Pope Paul VI will be canonized next Sunday. Popes John XXIII and John Paul II are already canonized. What does everyone think of Pope Francis? A living Saint or an ordinary level of holiness?
The normative usage of the word which translates to saint in the Bible is the living communion of believers. Check the Psalms for example, or the epistles addressed to the saints in (name a church).People cannot be saints when they are alive, because by definition, a “saint” is anyone who is in Heaven with God, which requires them to be dead.
That’s quite obviously not the question the OP was asking. The normative usage of the word which translates to saint in the Bible is the living communion of believers. Check the Psalms for example, or the epistles addressed to the saints in (name a church).
I agree to an extent, however, the point is this, why would we create a separate theological definition which is outside the context, and in some ways contradictory to, the normal usage of the term in scripture? Is this not confusing? That’s quite obviously not the question the OP was asking.
The theological usage of terms is often quite different from the ordinary usage and it’s clear from the context the OP is asking if Pope Francis will be canonized, in other words using the ordinary use of the term “saint” as in St. John Paul II, etc.
