Tell that to God! I differ because I believe God would not allow porn unless it contained an ultimate good. God can bring good from any evil Satan has to offer.
It’s totally evil. And think of the poor people that get hooked into the sex industry, whether it be x rated movies or nude dancing. They are totally abused and abased. There is NOTHING good in pornagraphy. It’s bad for everyone.

Are you saying that God cannot bring an ultimate, greater good from any evil Satan has to offer (including porn)?

with all due respect, I do not think the fundamental issue here is “porn”. the fundamental issue is your understanding of theology.

may I suggest that you start a thread over in Moral Theology with a title of something like “God allows porn because it contains an ultimate good”.

Will do! I’ll use the heading: “Is there any evil from Satan that God cannot bring about good, including porn?”

You seem to think that because porn exists it is so because God allows it. The converse, of course, is that if porn was totally bad and evil, without any redeeming features, as you have been suggesting it has, God would stop its proliferation. You are making some terrible assumptions about the nature of both God and man. God gave us free will and it is free will badly used that proliferates porn. If God were to prevent porn from proliferating, He would have to interfere with our given free will. God wont do that. Man is a moral agent who must himself choose between good and evil. If God interfered, then all evil would be banished and we’d be back in the Garden of Eden, but our moral agency would be redundant and our free will compromised.

Hear Hear! This is exactly right.👍

I believe God can bring about an ultimate, greater good from any evil Satan has to offer, including that temptation of our free will that leads to the use of porn. God is ultimately good, and God has divine providence over the whole Earth. St. Paul writes: “in everything God works for good” (Rom 8:28).

does that include child pornography and molestation?

Yes, in all things there exists a greater good that we are blind to here in this world! This is why forgiveness is so vitally important!
I disagree. It sounds like you are trying to justify evil by saying God will make something good of it.

There are things that are inherently evil and we should always turn away from evil. As the prayer goes: “Lead us not into temptation and deliver us from evil”

Yes, we should always turn from evil. And, if you read all my post you will see that I advocate that, as righteous Catholics, we should fight against evil wherever, and whenever, we can!.

I feel that porn is by its very nature evil. Not only does it provide an extremely unhealthy view of human sexuality, but the people that act in those “movies” Usually have lots of STD’s, and are selling away their sexuality. God meant for sex to be about love, not degrading others!

Is there any evil from Satan that God cannot bring about an ultimate, greater good?

As far as I’m concerned, you can outlaw porn, and alcohol while you’re at it! Both are evil in my eyes, regardless of all positive effects!

Is porn really that evil or does it provide a sexual outlet for a hyper-sexualized society?

My personal belief is that porn is, in and of itself, disgusting, but I believe that porn does serve an important service to society in that it does indeed provide a sexual outlet for a hyper-sexualized society. I believe that the biggest evil is in the people watching porn.
Pornography is one of the primary reasons so many in society are hypersexualized.

Was our society hyper-sexualized prior to the 1960s when porn first started to become popular? If not, what caused the baby boom here in America? What caused the world to grow from 2 billion to to nearly 7 billion from 1927 to the present? What caused the widespread sexual abuse of children and wives during the Victorian era?

I’m confused on the point of this thread. Any faithful Catholic knows porn is harmful and wrong.

In no situation is it a good thing, or serve any sort of purpose. It degrades the user and the person used.

Robert, you are not connecting the dots properly.

The baby boom happened in the 1950s, straight after World War II. it took place long before the advent if the Internet, before Playboy and before the promiscuous 1960s rolled along. The baby boom resulted from peace, Robert. The boom in world population has resulted from increased food security, plus amazing advances in medicine and science. Have you ever looked up life expectancy rates around the world at different times through history? People are living longer Robert and less people die from disease than a hundred years ago. Did you know that during the Roman Empire, Romans had a approximate life expectancy of 22 to 25 years. In 1900, the world life expectancy was approximately 30 years and in 1985 it was about 62 years. What is it today in your country Robert, around 80 years?.If we allowed your thinking on this pornography issue, we be forgiven for thinking porn makes us live longer!! I don’t think so…

The 'widespread sexual abuse of children and wives ’ you mention is not evidenced by any abnormal statistics, but mainly through hearesay. in post #40 I posted a copy of an English Act the 1861 Offences Against the Persons Act, which tightened public and private morality on this very point using the coercive powers of the state. Yet you still persist in saying the individual should be responsible. Numerous posters have pointed out to you that pornography is an addiction. Individuals cannot police themselves. State sanctions are needed.

You persist in asking can God not bring about some greater good from this evil. The answer is ‘yes, he could if He chose to intervene’. In post #85 I pointed out to you that if God intervened he would be compromising our Free Will and making our own moral agency redundant. He will not do that. The choice is ours and our salvation depends upon that choice. In the meantime, man is responsible for the temporal order of the world he lives in and the morality by which that society functions. God has gioven us directions and it is up to us to follow them. We must first accept, as a society, that pornography has no redeeming features whatsoever and we must act accordingly, not wait for God.

I’m a little confused. Are you suggesting that hyper-sexuality was present prior to porn or only after?

As for your post number 40: Are you suggesting that the laws against child abuse ended the abuse against children and wives during the Victorian era? Thats contrary to the historical writings on the Victorian era! The abuse against children and wives were rampant during the Victorian era!

As for you post number 85 I responded: I believe God can bring about an ultimate, greater good from any evil Satan has to offer, including that temptation of our free will that leads to the use of porn. Are you suggesting that God cannot bring an ultimate, greater good from any evil Satan has to offer? I have discussed this throughout this thread. For example, in post 89!
