Is protection against demonic activity arbitrary?

I keep hearing exorcists say that in order to avoid getting possessed/oppressed by a demon, all one has to do is remain in a state of grace and strive for daily holiness.

But they also list saints and holy people like Job in scripture, St. Gemma, and the Emily Rose girl who were devout Christians but were still possessed.

So it seems like there is no actual protection against being possessed. One just better ‘hope’ that they are one of the lucky ones that this doesn’t happen to, which is a fact that makes me very paranoid and anxious. Because some of the symptoms of possession are depression. I have had depression before and the though that randomly becoming depressed while I’m happy and living the faith is scary.

Possession is very rare. The average Catholic who stays close to God through the Sacraments and prayer, particularly the Eucharist is extremely unlikely to be possessed. Usually possession occurs in those living lives of persistent serious sin and involved in the occult. If you are trying to live a good Holy life close to God and stay away from the occult and serious grave sin then you should not worry.

Satan can and does use our fears to terrorise us. It is just another deception. God protects us. Some very holy people may have been possessed but these would have been victim souls who were allowed by God to suffer for reasons known to God, probably their own sanctification and reparation for the sins of others.

Please don’t worry about possession. Really don’t. Focus on God and as Saint Pio said " pray, hope and don’t worry".

You appear to suffer from anxiety. That may not be spiritual at all. What are you doing to treat and control your anxiety?
