I mean the idea that “mental illness” are caused by biochemical unbalance doesn’t have any support. Is that sciencie? isn’t that a fraud? You know they( psychiatrists) give medication to completely normal kids and that should make you angry.

what about people who have killed themselves after taking psychotropic medications?
How do you know these people wouldn’t have killed themselves without? If they killed themselves, they were already depressed. What about the greater number of people who are helped?

People abuse physics and chemistry to make weapons. Is that the physicist and chemist’s fault or the science? The science is what the science is: its application is at the fault of its practicioners.

Ok. Let’s say you’re right, that mental illness isn’t caused by a chemical balance. What do you think causes it?

PSYCHOLOGY is often a philosophical position parading about as science. IMHO, any undergraduate course in the subject, coupled with a brief overview of how to analyze and read research, can at least leave one suspicious of many aspects of the field.

Psychiatry is often rooted in medical science, yes, but I’m extremely unfamiliar with such things.

Regarding what else could cause mental illness besides chemical imbalances: diabolical possession and other forms of diabolical influence.

Psychology can also be most helpful.

Doesn’t have any support? I suggest you read more… a lot more.

Well I’m not exactly sure what you’re angling at. But here are a couple of facts I’ve sort of pushed together for this.
  1. Chemicals can affect attitudes and moods.
  2. People know how some of these chemicals affect most people. With some degree of accuracy.
  3. People have been cured with psychiatry. Even if sometimes it means just taking a placebo.
Does this make it a science? I don’t know. Is it something worth studying and understanding better? Absolutely.

Does that help?

Is psychiatry a fraud?:confused:/QUOTE
Yes it is a fraud. It originated with Freud in the 1800s. There was no such thing of it before him. It centers on sexuality as being the reason for every motive in human existence. Unfortunately, somehow it has become a profession, dispenses all kinds of drugs and is of course very lucrative!

I don’t know if it would be considered a hard science in the same way that physics is. But there are definite scientific results from it. Psychology produces repeatable results and there are legitimate experiments done in the field.

Psychiatric therepy helps a lot of people, too.

Actually Freudian psychology is only one branch of psychology. There is a biological root, a behavioristic root, a cognitive root (which studies how information is processed. how memory works), and various other branches.

BTW, when demonic possession is suspected and before an exorcism is approved, a complete physical AND psychological examination is made as part of the evaluation. It it’s good enough for Holy Mother Church… just saying!

to the OP: As others have said you need to do further research but I feel you will not because by your comments and rebuttals you don’t want to be exposed to an alternate point of view, As far as drugs go, any medication can have side effects and effect people’s chemistry. But we are Catholics, not Christian Scientists.

You just proved my point. Psychiatry is dispensing drugs. It is not a science.
