When I think about it, the word Geez is simply a corrupted, shortened form of the name Jesus. Is it therefore wrong to say the word Geez?

I thought geez was a contracted version of gee whiz? Is it wrong to say gee whiz?

I am guessing that “gee whiz” is a corruption of “Jesus,” but that’s just a guess. Please don’t get scrupulous about this - saying “geez” hardly merits a serious discussion. There are more important things to worry about.

So, where does gee whiz come from? Maybe “Jesus wist” (the idea of “God knew/God knows”?

That would fall in the same category as saying “Oh Shoot” instead of a 4-letter cuss word beginning with S; or saying “Darn It” instead of another 4-letter cuss word beginning with D.

I don’t see a problem with using a socially acceptable word in place of a socially unacceptable word, even if it is a corruption of it. The point is, the socially acceptable word is NOT the bad word. And it is human nature, after all, to need an exclamation to say when surprised, angry, frustrated, etc. So go ahead and say Geez, Shoot, or Darn. You are not saying God’s name or a cuss word.

I remember not being allowed to say ‘jeez’, ‘yikes’, or even ‘gadzooks’ growing up because supposedly they’re taking God’s name in vain.

I think my parents went a little overboard. Jeez…

Yes, therefore it’s wrong to say the word in vain, and an offense against the Second Commandment, though the matter here is not necessarily grave. In fact, almost all interjections are contractions of phrases which offend against this Commandment.

St. Paul writes in his letter to the Philippians (2:10), “At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those that are in heaven, on earth, and under the earth”. When one considers the vast power of the Holy Name of Jesus, one feels true remorse for all the blasphemies, sacrileges, and offenses committed against His Name. The Holy Name Society was founded in part to respond to the call of the Sacred Ecumenical Council of Lyons, “that the faithful should have a special devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus [and] that reparation might be made for insults offered to it by Albigenses and other blasphemers”.

It says that it is “apparently”, not “certainly”, the case that “gee whiz” is connected to “Jesus”.

In any event, don’t say “Geez”. Just say “Cheez”.
But than that would just be another form saying “Jesus”😃

gee whiz is a further elaboration on geez, which in turn is a contraction of Jesus.
My exclamation of choice is d’oh! 😛

No. Language is not merely formal but requires intention. If you do not intend Jesus! in saying Geeze, then by all means, and with the Cheese Whiz, say Geeze.

Obviously, the intent is to sound like the Holy Name.

Why not instead say, “Park Ranger” or “Riverbank”?
