So, I noticed that most of the parishoners at my parish don’t really sing loud. The ones who usually sing the loudest are the cantors (even when they are not cantoring). I sing loud sometimes, but I’m afraid people find it annoying. My friend told me I have a beautiful singing voice, so it’s not like I’m singing very off-tune and don’t know it. Would singing loudly with a good voice be annoying to people?

Sometimes I can’t help myself. If I like the hymn, I’ll sing loud.

I can’t carry a tune to save my life.

I like when folks w/ nice voices sing loudly. 🤷

If you have a nice singing voice, sing loudly! As someone with a lousy singing voice, I really appreciate those of you with that gift!

Haha thanks. I guess I’m worried people think I’m showing off. I need to stop worrying what people think about me! :o

Sing. It is always better to sing than to not. If you are singing louder, then you may give enough cover for some shier person to at least sing some.

i think its not annoying and the community/congregation must be encouraged to loudly sing the songs, for Eucarist, is the highest form of worship, we can also see here if who is a happy person here for its EASTER TIME the Lord is rissen as we say 🙂

Yes, sing loudly! I love it when people sing, even if they are not good.

I sing loudly, if I know the song and can do it well. Why not?

I love to sing, even when I am not leading the singing, and playing. I must admit, these responses do my heart good! I wish people would sing more at Mass. We are supposed to make a joyful noise!! Some may be more in tune than others, but, no fear!!! Father encourages it in his homilies from time to time, too, with little success. I appreciate his efforts!

How about an Easter resolution to sing more? What better reason!!! Then, remember, every Sunday is a little Easter!

sing loud if you sit next to me because I will be lip syncing

I am not the OP but all these responses are very heartening. 👍 I love to sing and I can sing quite loudly and do sometimes. I was once told by a nun (at my college) that I was singing too loud and it was disrupting the “community”. (these were the same nuns who said I shouldn’t be kneeling because the “community” didn’t kneel) I almost didn’t go back to nun mass after that and almost exclusively went to monk Mass or the parish church on the corner.

So yay for people who like the singing 👍

Haha, for instance, Holy Thursday when they are processing with the Blessed Sacrament, everyone is quietly singing “Sing, My Tongue, The Savior’s Glory” to the tune of ST. THOMAS, and come by me: “OVER ANCIENT FORMS OF WORSHIP, NEWER RIGHTS OF GRACE PREVAIL!!!” Haha. I got a little too into it.

Scripture says, “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord.”
Not all the birds in the forest are larks with beautiful voices, and yet it is our “sacrifice of praise” that God asks of us. Another way of looking at it. God gave me the voice I have. He knows whether or not I can sing on key.
Sing loudly with all the skill at your command.

It’s great as long as you are not singing loudly out of pride or a desire to call attention to yourself. Last night as the congregation was going up the aisle for veneration and communion I heard 2 beautiful male voices coming up behind me. They were really loud compared to everyone else. They were teenagers - I was so proud of them for singing their heart!

God gave me a horrible singing voice and no musical talent. I can’t keep a beat and couldn’t carry a tune if it had handles (hence, I played the tuba in high school band).

Therefore, I make sure to thank God every Sunday by singing loud and proud.

Most of the time when I hear people singing loudly, it is not a problem and it doesn’t bother me. In fact it is easier for me to sing when others are singing around me. I can only recall one person from a few years ago that used to sing so loudly drowning out everyone else and that was a distraction and was annoying. I don’t mind that others sing loud, just so I can hear myself sing, too. 🙂

This reminds me of our Deacon Emeritus who was tone deaf and could not carry the simplest tune. Our former pastors insisted that he sing the Good Friday Petitions and after each petition he would sing off tune, “Let us kneel” “Let us stand”. At dinner time our children would mock his off tune singing---- “Let us pray” “Let us eat”

Sing out. I love it when I hear the people around me do - even when they can’t sing. I like it even more when I cantor and the congregation sings out. Boy, were they singing to raise the roof of the church today at the recessional. The organist “pulled out all the stops” and they were even singing at equal volume as the organ. It was beautiful.

Even though I’m a professional singer, though, I do get shy when I’m in the congregation about singing, especially if no one else is singing. But a few times at different churches, when I have sung out, the people around me started to sing more and some would thank me after mass for my voice, but also because it gave them the courage to sing out as well. So, you never know how you’ll encourage others to sing when you’re in the congregation.
