There is more reporting of violent acts. In some cases, the acts are more extreme when being compared to the records of decades ago.
Not sure what you are talking about here as to the acts being more severe. I would still say our forefathers were much more violent. Examples in the last 100 years or so:There is more reporting of violent acts. In some cases, the acts are more extreme when being compared to the records of decades ago.
Examples are road rage, school violence, and community sports. I once demanded an opponent in a non-contact sport not to go head hunting against my teammates. His actions did not change. He actually believed his opponents have no rights to defend themselves. The next time, he made some slurs. Unfortunate. I am thankful I never got to play against him. My teammate kept his cool, used good judgement and sportsmenship. School fights seem to only end when someone needs to be taken to the hospital. Not sure what you are talking about here as to the acts being more severe…
Yes. Pro-death mentality.Do you think that society is more violent than it was 50 years ago? What do you think has contributed to this rise?
No. It is not that bad.If you were in the supermarket and bumped into someone elses car, would you be worried about confronting the person who’s car you’d damaged for fear of violent reprisal?
Yes, unless I had to. Common sense. Are there places you wont go at night in your town/ city?
I wouldn’t be going there if it were so.When you go at night socially, are fights a common scene?
Disease.Do you think this is a natural progression in society or is it a disease we need to cure?
Well if we add in all the killings that go in countries today and over the last 100 years that we couldn’t count and all the abortions, what other centuries are far worse in terms of violence? Not sure what you are talking about here as to the acts being more severe. I would still say our forefathers were much more violent. Examples in the last 100 years or so:
large groups:
Mafia (worldwide)
KKK (and other linching groups)
Organized mobs/gangsters
Pirates
Violent robberies / bandits
countries:
Stalin - killed millions
Mao - killed millions
Hitler - killed millions
Pot - killed a million
wars (a few examples)
Boehr war - killed hundreds of thousands
WWI - killed millions
WWII - killed millions
Korea - killed hundreds of thousands
Vietnam - killed 10s of thousands (aftermath killed about 1 million)
Preposterous. There are state killings going on daily. We have families killing their young and their old. And we have ongoing terrorism and war, recent holocausts and multiple mass genocides. It is anything but obvious that the world is much less violent. Perhaps not too violent in many suburban communities but that doesn’t make up the world.obviously much less violent
worldwide the number of wars is at it’s lowest point since they started keeping records and the population is at its highest so the per capita rate has gone way down
there are no more major armed beligerant states staring each other down
Domestically in the US the crime rate is at a 30-40(?) year low
of course there arePreposterous. There are state killings going on daily.
Brad said:………Perhaps not too violent in many suburban communities but that doesn’t make up the world.
Who said anything about the suburbs?
All I said was conflict is down globally and crime is down domestically
You said the world was obviously much less violent. I don’t see that as obvious at all.of course there are
who said there weren’t?
All I said was that the number of wars and the related casualties is far lower now than in the recent past and the population is up.
Code:Who said anything about the suburbs? All I said was conflict is down globally and crime is down domestically
And these things and worse go on today and when they are stood up against (as in abortion or Sadaam Hussein), those standing up are criticized as being too involved in others’ business.I suppose that I am taking to long a view of history. In the past fifty years, yes, we have grown a bit more violent. In overall human history though, I think that we are less violent. Until recently, cruelty was a fact of life.
Watch some of the history channels stories on the Roman Empire. THe things that they did to people in the arenas was horrific. One of the "Roman Historians’ (I think that was what he was) very blandly quoted that if a Roman woman was convicted of killing her hubby, her death sentence was to be forced to be raped by a bull in front of the arena crowd. That is so incrediably horrific that I can’t even comprehend the brutality.
Go into the middle ages, some pretty horrible stuff there. Remember the film, Braveheart!! Did you ever wonder what they were doing to him. I won’t say. Just look into what England’s method of killing for treason was until, I think, Queen Elizabeth’s time. It was not by chopping off your head-a nice easy way to die.
During Victorian times, it was not uncommon for young orphans to starve to death.
Now that I have greatly disturbed myself I think that I will go say a prayer of thanksgiving for the time period that I was born into.
Well, of course humans as a whole are about the same level of violence as they have always been. I don’t think that we are more. And these things and worse go on today and when they are stood up against (as in abortion or Sadaam Hussein), those standing up are criticized as being too involved in others’ business.
Don’t think that because the US appears civilized relative to the Roman Empire and other time periods that sick and demented torturing, raping, and killing does not go on in this country and state sponsored the world over. It is no surprise that killing the weakest of society has become in vogue and utiliatrian research on life is being pushed for.
What kind of torture and killing did Hitler and Stalin undertake. How about Sadaam. How about the leadership in Iran and Syria and tribal African countries? How about China? North Korea? Or just walk into an inner city street gang and see the torture and killings that go on.
Just because we don’t see it doesn’t mean that it is not happening.
What is equally horrific? I count lives myself because each and every one is precious. Method does make a difference but numbers count more. Being “efficient” as you describe is being more violent to me.For all the atrocities that you can name that have been committed in this century, I can name some equally horrific events that have happened in the past. The difference between say Hitler and tyrants of the past is that the modern dictator has technology to assist him in his attempts at genocide, perhaps pushing the death counts higher. But this doesn’t make us less violent or more violent, it just makes us a little more efficent.
I tend to agree. There are even studies that show that a consequence of video game addiction, that it is harder for children to carry on a conversation with their parents! Scary isn’t it. A young priest just recently said that what our society watches we immitate it. It goes back to what you said about our society’s acceptance and normalization of sin. Our parents are not being very good examples. Men and women committing adultery on each other. Profaning God’s gift of life and matrimony, you wonder why we’ve had so many terrorists bombings. Our youth are not being taught solid traditional family views. Its no wonder there are so many gangs, divorces, abused children. And the fact that we have had 2 generations of Catholics that are not catchised! Our bishops and priests bare the majority of the responsibility. It’s by our sins that we constitute terror.Wow, I was the split vote, 12 to 12.
There are more violent video games, movie ratings are such that something that is PG now would have been R 10 to 15 yrs ago. Television shows show more violence than they use to. The press is more active with military units on front lines, along with how fast information, including pictures and video, is passed around the world. Terrorist actions in the late 70s didn’t recieve the type of plublicity it does today. We, as a public, now have access to the grisley beheading videos because of the internet. All of this leads to a build up of tolerance to commiting of violent acts and a thinking that smaller acts are not that big a deal.
Two comments to disprove your theory: Hong Kong has the highest population density, and their crime rate is less than any major US city.Ever see what happens to a rat population in a controled environment (such as a cage of some sort)? Population keeps rising, leaving smaller and smaller living space for others, and it continually cycles until finally they begin to turn on each other …
The same goes for my city in upstate, NY, and the same here in Baltimore, MDFifty years ago would be 1955. In 1955 in the city I grew up in one could wander around anywhere in town without fear of violence. That is no longer true. Part of the reason has to do with the rise of the drug culture and the breakdown of families.
