Is Space Exploration Worth the Cost?

I truly believe GOD created other life out there and it would be great to discover it if in fact we are able to .
Yes, He did, and He told us about it in scripture.

The unfallen “worlds” , and the unfallen beings therein which “went not astray” , being “just persons, which need no repentance” :

See Hebrews 1:2, 11:3 “the worlds”, see also 2 Kings 23:5.

We are that one lost world, whom the Son of God, ‘Jesus’, left the ‘99’ (who need no repentance, having never fallen) for in Heaven to come and save us, that he might come from that “far country” and deliver us, and “return home” with us, that we may once again have a “place” among those “many mansions” : See Matthew 18:11-13; Luke 15:4-7; John 14:1-4.

The very “sons of God” (do not confuse with Genesis 6, differing context) who rule the unfallen worlds, as Adam [Luke 3:38], the first [1 Corinthians 15:45,46,47], on earth had [Genesis 1:26,28; Psalms 8:5] before his fall, and the angelic “morning stars”, see Job 1:6, 2:1, 38:4-7 & 1 Kings 22:19; 2 Chronicles 18:18; Isaiah 14:12; Ezekiel 28:12-19; Jude 1:6. See also Romans 9:29; Ephesians 1:10, 3:15; James 5:4; Revelation 3:15, 5:3,4,13, 19:4,5,6,19. See also the phrase “LORD of hosts”, “kingdom of Heaven”, “king of heaven”, “Lord of Heaven”, “Kingdom of God”, “King of Kings, Lord of Lords”, “throne of God”, etc.

See also the prayer, “Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”, Matthew 6:10

Thrones: Daniel 7:9; Matthew 19:28; Colossians 1:16; Revelation 4:4, 11:16, 20:4

Dominions: Job 25:2; Psalms 103:22, 114:2, 145:13; Daniel 4:3,34, 6:26; Micah 4:8 (tie to Genesis 1:26,28; Psalms 8:6, 72:8; Daniel 7:27; Zechariah 9:10; 1 Peter 4:11, 5:11; Jude 1:25; Revelation 1:6); Ephesians 1:20,21; Colossians 1:16; Jude 1:8

Principalities: Romans 8:38; Ephesians 1:20,21, 3:10, 6:12; Colossians 1:16, 2:15; Titus 3:1

Powers: Ephesians 1:20,21, 3:10, 6:12; Colossians 1:16; Titus 3:1; 1 Peter 3:22

Rulers of: Ephesians 6:12

things above: Colossians 3:1,2

legions ‘good’ (Matthew 26:53) and ‘evil’ (Mark 5:9)

etc.

A useful listing, and many more details, may be found in chapter 3 of this interesting research - here.

A large yield nuclear warhead would be able to deflect it just enough to miss the earth.

I think there would still be damage because it would break into smaller pieces

A precise survey and distance formula would account for a possible break up, with other missiles waiting to finish the job, if needed.

If it wasn’t for space exploration, we wouldn’t have made a lot of discoveries that we use today on Earth.

Imagine a world without Tang, if you can, which was introduced as part of the space program.

Nope. Physics does not work that way. An explosion, no matter how energetic, would not deflect the asteroid at all. The most it could do is to break it up into several pieces. But all those pieces would essentially follow the same trajectory. Perhaps if the explosion were powerful enough to pulverize the whole thing into pieces no bigger than basketballs, then maybe they would all burn up in the atmosphere before reaching earth. It is unlikely that a single charge could do that. You would need to bury many such charges deep within the asteroid and set them all off at once. Unless Bruce Willis is overseeing the operation, it isn’t going to happen.

However, if the asteroid is located far enough away from earth, the amount of deflection needed would be small. Then we might plant a rocket on the asteroid and slowly push it perpendicular to its path. But that would require an ongoing detection program with probes in space, and a plan to rendezvous with the asteroid, matching its speed, landing on it, and deploying the “nudge.” That is not something we will do by waiting until we see something from terrestrial telescopes which would give very little time to plan and launch a mission, especially if we are not already proficient in exploring space.

My sense of irony tells me the Deep Impact probe from NASA in 2015 nudged the comet just enough to be on a collision course with earth in a few centuries.

Thanks for asking seriously, are you are real Colonel like Sanders?

To get this thread back on track as to whether or not its cost effective to pursue a space program, I say full hearty YES. Now to take this thread back off track by giving my reason why. I’m tired of hearing this excuse that we don’t have the money to pursue certain things in our society. We need to stop thinking this way. Our infra-structure in many places is in dire need of repair. Our schools sometimes don’t have the equipment they need to accommodate their teachers and students. There are still people who want insurance but cannot afford it. Outside our country, there are thousands of people who don’t have proper housing, food or drinking water. I hear the conservatives saying “we have to get the country’s budget under control”. We have such smart people in our country but yet we have money as an excuse for the impasse. Let start solving the above problems and stop worrying how we are going to pay for it. Almost every country is facing this problem about money. Where is all the money disappearing to? And please, don’t tell me the rich are hoarding it all. If that’s the case then I wholly support Former President Obamas move to create more money. Now back to the space program. There is so much potential in developing our space program. Think of the resources that are in our solar system. Jobs, jobs, jobs will be created by the tens of thousands. And as a finally note, I highly agree with one of the other posters. Lets clean up our oceans on Earth (one way is by getting our resources from asteroids vs drilling and mining for them (yes, I know there is no oil in those rocks in space but there are other resources)).
