I was disappointed when I received this scanned Starbucks cup from a good friend who purchased this cup of coffee at a Starbucks in Plano Texas. I have no problem with them not mentioning God, but the following offends me. Asking us to turn away from God, a figment of our imaginations, in times of need. Wow. I will now be forced to find other coffee sources.

If you can’t read the jpg, it says
The way I see it #247
Why in moments of crisis do we ask God for strength and help? As cognitive beings, why would we ask something that may be a figment of our imaginations for guidance? Why not search inside ourselves for the power to overcome? After all, we are strong enough to cause most of the catastrophes we need to endure. —Bill Scheel

God blessed me with the inability to afford such things to be worried about supporting them.😃

I did “treat myself” though, when I was working full time before my child was born. And after that day, I never cared about treating myself to a thing!

Never heard of this before!

I am all for ecumenism, but this is something I would never endorse.

Somewhere out there someone has a list of all those companies “we shouldn’t support”. Please pick on another one. I happen to like Starbucks, as I am sure do many others. This topic has been discussed in many previous threads. It’s getting old.

If it were me, I would have asked for the manager - the teenager running the register has no control over these things - shown the manager the offending cup, and ask if they have any that say offensive things about blacks or gays. Then I would explain that religious bigotry is just as unacceptable as racial or sexual bigotry. Then I would ask for my money back. Without yelling, I would not hesitate to speak loudly enough for other patrons to hear. After getting my money back I would courteously say thank you and leave.

A letter to Starbucks corporate would follow.

That is what would happen if it were me. It is extremely unlikely I will ever find myself in this position, as I do not patronize Starbucks because I every cup of coffee I ever had from there was bad and their prices are too expensive even if the coffee was good. I did have a good sandwich from Starbucks once, but again, their price was double what I could have gotten an equally good sandwich for at a the deli across the street.

Starbucks do great coffee and service if you like your coffee experience to go something like this:

Welcome to Starbucks sir, how can I help you:

“I’d like a giant bucket of milk with a tiny drop of coffee in the bottom, please.”

How big would you like your bucket, sir?

“How about 30oz?”

Certainly sir, and what silly name would you like for your coffee today?

“Hmm, I think I’ll go for a ventisuperfrappemochachino please.”

As for the poem, I guess they were just trying to be ‘inspirational’. Maybe we should write to them and suggest some of the poetry of St John of the Cross or the sayings of St Josemaria Escriva be included if this is to be a series of ‘though provoking’ quotes on coffee cups.

I do go to Starbucks occasionally. I never paid any attention to the writing on the cups, but why they would print something like this on the cups is beyond me. I’ll definitely think twice before going there again. Maybe they thought that it being a quote from someone else would exonerate them from all responsibility, but I think it makes them just as guilty.

I think with all the beautiful quotes and poetry that exists in this world, they could have picked something else that would not offend…

Anywho, I am sooooo glad that I live out in the sticks, and I have never been to a Starbuscks…they just opened one an hour away…dont tell them that though, they’ll probabably come plop one at the end of my road…

Starbucks is overrated. Why pay 4 bucks for a coffee that I can get for a buck at Turkey Hill or Sheetz? Starbucks is for wanna-be trendy people who buy for the name only…right up there with Abercrombie and Fitch.

I only went to Starbucks recently because I was given a gift card for Starbucks. The coffee wasn’t BAD…just overpriced for what you get.

I agree, way toooo $$…only in my case it would be Tim Hortons.
And I do not like it, way to strong for me…

i agree, the coffee is overrated in proportion for the prices they charge for it but i don’t think it is an anti-christian company. it was just a inspirational message from hundreds of other messages in the starbucks cup which might not reflect the views of the company.

the best option you could do is call the attention of the manager or the customer support or care representative of starbucks and give them the benefit of the doubt.

I do find this message offensive. But I will say something in Starbucks defense. They hire full-time workers. They give health benefits. They give stock options. Most coffee shops, sandwich places, etc don’t do that. I suppose we see the costs of offerring such things reflected in the price of their coffee. When the worker at Sheetz gets sick, I think they are on their own for how to pay the Dr.

I don’t boycott someone just because they have a different viewpoint than I do.

In order for my opinion on the exsistence of God to be respected, shouldn’t I respect someone who doesn’t believe in God?

Starbucks is not $4 a cup. thats a soundbyte. a large coffee is usually around $1.80. comparable and sometimes even cheaper than the local Philly Dunkin Donuts. (which are often owned by Hindus… do we boycott them for being pagans?)
its the mixed drink recipies that cost a fortune.

taste… i find starbucks over roasts cheap beans.
I don’t like their coffee. their beans make for a fantastic double shot of espresso. a little sugar, a little cream. thats what i usually get. If i get 4 shots of espresso, the charge is $2.25.
the large coffee at any dunkin donuts around here is $2.20ish. So it is comparable. A Large coffee at the Dunkin Donuts near Doylestown, PA cost me $2.45 the other day.

In my estimation, tastings and opinion… the BEST bang for your coffee dollar right now is McDonalds coffee. yes, i said it. Its a smooth morning blend. if its freshly made, for 69¢ its the best buy around.

I usually brew my own at home . It’s easier.

As far as places being owned by Hindus…they don’t try to bash my beliefs or promote their beliefs on their cups as Starbucks does.

Its a matter of personal taste, but I think that McDonald’s is about the worst coffee you can buy.

before Dec 2006, i’d agree with you.

They use a decent bean now and i’m telling you… it’s a darn good cup! they actually worked to improve their coffee… they use a more expensive bean thats roasted a little differently in the past.

they’re only 69¢… try one, and if you don’t like it, come back here and yell at me!!

I personally don’t support starbucks because of there support of PP among other off the wall things they say and do as the OP has shown. But I also wonder as Christians shouldn’t we really stop and think how wasteful it would be for us to spend $5.00 on a 30oz cup of coffee. I always think of Mother Teresa telling the girl who wanted to help her, to go back home and think of making the sacrifice of not buying the expensive scarf. As a Christian how can we justify spending the $5.00 a day for a cup of coffee.

Is Starbucks a non-Christian company? No. It is an ANTI-Christian company. Big difference. 😦

I have always been impressed by a friend who made exactly that statement. It’s not that they do or don’t promote PP etc, it’s the indulgence of an expensive latte every day. The problem does not lie with Starbucks. They are selling what we will buy. The problem is in our justification of such a comparatively expensive daily indulgence.

I love Starbucks lattes. And I will buy them occcasionally. But I now brew my own coffee at home and will get sometimes get special syrups at the grocery store so that I can have a flavored drink. But hot milk and coffee I can handle completely on my own!

PS–my friend sponsors a child through Vision or a similar organization for the same money that a daily latte would have cost. There is a challenge for you!

It’s very easy. I do it occasionally. But, I also give to the church, my children are fed, and we do volunteer work.

So, I live in a smaller house so that I have more money available for the kids to play sports and take vacations and buy coffee. I buy ties on sale instead of full price. The kids aren’t begging for designer clothes.

We all make decisions that create an entire life. To focus in on only one thing isn’t useful.

They are promoting Joni Mitchells new album which is all anti - Catholic - that is how she is promoting it…here you go.

I wont buy Starbucks ever again.

Agreed! 👍

Besides the coffee that is not that good, way to overpriced, a very liberal company, supporting planned parenthood, I now have another reason to never step foot in a Starbucks.

Thank God for being poor and only able to get the cheaper coffee, I will buy mine at the gas station or McDonalds. Those iced coffees are addicting.
