How do we respond to claims that the Bible is misogynistic?
 
No it’s not. Jesus treated women with such dignity snd respect, different from the men in that time.

Very important women in the Bible. Mary of course.

Also significant moments in the Bible had to do with women. The woman at the well was a sinner and Jesus revealed himself in public as the messiah for the first time through her. She had the job of spreading that news to others.

When Jesus resurrected the first person he appeared to was a woman. Mary Magdalene

Many more examples
 
maybe its only “misogynistic” because we are using our cultural tendencies as a comparison for a time that was over 2000+ years old. They are also judging this by our societal moral values which have been influenced by the Judeo-Christian morality that stopped that sort of behavior. Humans learn and the story of the Bible is, at least in part, a story of how humanity has grown as well.
 
I think a good starting point would be for them to share where they perceive misogyny in the Bible.

Then share with them how fuller context and understanding of the Bible reveals uplifting love for women.
 
The Bible is definitely misogynistic for our time and our culture. Place it in its context of 2000+ years ago and the male dominated society it was then? Not really. We can’t change the facts of society back then. All we can do is understand how different it was from ours.
 
I would ask for examples. Then give examples of the strong women in the Bible.

It was written from within a patriarchal society and it reflects those times. Would we class it as misogynistic now? Yes, we would. Two thousand years later and we still haven’t reached a point where there is universal equality for women…

The Bible is fine. The problem is the modern culture, poisoned with liberalism
 
It isn’t possible to have equality for both sexes. That is why in the bible men and women have different roles. The Bible was never and has never been sexist.

Equality means the best person for the job - man or woman. Equality means equal wages - for men and women. Equality means equal opportunity - for men and women.

We don’t have that equality even now. And things have been getting better for a long time. If you want to say that women were the equal of men in the bible then you are implying that we have gone backwards these last two thousand years.
 
I’d point out the numerous times Jesus stood up for women’s rights, such as by preventing the woman caught in adultery from being stoned, by treating the Samaritan lady and Mary the sister of Martha with great respect etc. Also, as someone said the person needs to p(name removed by moderator)oint what in Scripture is misogynistic in their opinion, then we can go from there.
 
NO but the men dominated the whole Ancient civilization during those time…

Let us look for Sarah, Miriam, Deborah, Rahab, Judith, Ruth, Rachel, Hannah, and Esther in the Old Testament. There are some women that aren’t mentioned but these are the notable women had gained honor and respect on their lifetime.

Of course, Mama Mary and Elizabeth for the New Testament who are highly regarded by us, Christians.

Your entire post, WA_Catholic, is one long biased opinion that is not reflective of Catholic teaching or Catholic anything.

I post this so that someone who knows nothing of Catholicism and happens to find what you wrote doesn’t assume the Church teaches that or that most Catholics think like that.

It’s just sad that we have to live in a world where people feel free to express this stuff today and are permitted to do so, but it’s a cross Jesus gives us to carry, having to be patient and kind with those who propagate outlandish views.

What did I say that was wrong or outlandish? Also, what did say on behalf of the Church or assert was Church teaching?

We have to remember the Bible was written in a time and place where patriarchy was the de facto way that society was ruled. But even then there were times when women stepped forward and had great influence. Deborah was a Judge in Israel, Judith saved her people and was praised for it. Jesus treated women with respect. We can’t judge societies solely by our own standards.
Look at Proverbs 31 10-31. Is that the work of someone who hates women?

WA, you started by claiming that the bible was not misogynist and then posted the most sexist comments I’ve seen in this forum.
 
The Bible is not sexist and nothing I said in my post was sexist.
