Maybe this is a stupid idea, but maybe someone needs to write a book demonstrating how the Bible is so very not-straightforward to interpret, in order to impress upon Protestants what a bad idea it is to think you can just go and interpret it. But that maybe that wouldn’t go anywhere…
I just remember when I was first coming back to the Catholic Faith, a number of JWs and Protestants had this attitude, which I thought was right at the time, that “Yeah, the Bible is so simple! People overcomplicate things and get all these weird ideas. You gotta just read the word.” Well, I love Holy Scripture, but boy is that not true, at least for a good portion of it! There are large portions of the Bible I have never ever heard anyone talk about, some that hardly any Church Fathers even commented on.
“God wished difficulties to be scattered through the Sacred Books inspired by Him, in order that we might be urged to read and scrutinize them more intently, and, experiencing in a salutary manner our own limitations, we might be exercised in due submission of mind. No wonder if of one or other question no solution wholly satisfactory will ever be found, since sometimes we have to do with matters obscure in themselves and too remote from our times and our experience; and since exegesis also, like all other most important sciences, has its secrets, which, impenetrable to our minds, by no efforts whatsoever can be unraveled.”
Ven. Pope Pius XII (Divino Afflante Spiritu)
I think sola scriptura people think we’re “sophists” with all our fancy philosophy. But I say the most successful sophism accomplishes the most by insisting that only simple is good, by instilling a general suspicion toward philosophy or anything scientific that isn’t “science”.
