i think girls in veils are the cutest things in the world. it also makes women prettier, imo.
Wait… Mary without a headcovering? This is Cardinal Mahoney’s depiction of The Blessed Mother without a veil at his Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles. When I saw this in person I wasn’t offended because I thought the statue was a male looking angel guarding the front door. It never occured to me that this was supposed to be the Blessed Mother herself, with the moon under her feet. I guess he thinks that this can be a model for those who want to imitate Mary.I think the chapel veil will come back.
I have to agree with you there.Personally I think that statue of the Blessed Virgin in Cardinal Mahoney’s cathedral is the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen…![]()
I think it’s a shame that East is no longer East. But “spiritual” east is better than no East at all.Facing literal East or ‘spiritual East’?
Some things were tossed out but not lost. “Spiritual” east is better than no east. The spiritual is real. Things are slowly coming around. It doesn’t seem that long ago that even monthly Adoration was a tradition that had been abandoned altogether.I think it’s a shame that East is no longer East. But “spiritual” east is better than no East at all.

Not only that, but what part of that statue helps anyone think of heaven or God, or actually anything at all higher than us. Someone really needs to climb up there, cover her head and add some color…but that is just my opinion.Personally I think that statue of the Blessed Virgin in Cardinal Mahoney’s cathedral is the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen…![]()
How the artist was chosen for this commission is beyond me. I looked up his work on his website and most of it is obscene. Not only nudity, but women in indecent, degrading positions. The sculptor of the Blessed Mother above a Catholic Cathedral shouldn’t be a promotor of pornography. Giving him the commission didn’t bring about a conversion either, judging by his website. I am totally disgusted and sickened. Not only that, but what part of that statue helps anyone think of heaven or God, or actually anything at all higher than us. The church in my parish was built well before Vat II - the priest only faces literal East if he faces the congregation. Pre Vat II he would be facing West.I think it’s a shame that East is no longer East. But “spiritual” east is better than no East at all.

But how much of that part of scripture is based on cultural norms of the time?I have a desire to show reverence and respect to our Lord by wearing a head covering/veil but feel if I did at my church, I would be drawing attention to myself and that’s not what I want. I have attented a Latin Mass (out of town) where the majority of women wore veils. I would really like to see this traditional practice ressurected seeing it is based on sacred scripture.
That’s a debate for another thread… actually, there’ve been many threads asking that specific questionBut how much of that part of scripture is based on cultural norms of the time?
Hey Cat!I am a convert to Catholicism, so I have a difficult time understanding why wearing a veil is any more “devout” than not wearing one.
Also, what does “looking pretty” have to do with anything? Isn’t this a vanity?
I seriously doubt the veil will come back in. I think there are a lot of women like me who can’t make a connection between what we wear and our spirituality.
Well - if the sales on eBay are any indication, you are extremely wrong on this point! I keep a daily eye on them (I have an automated search set up for me), and trust me, they are selling like hot cakes.I seriously doubt the veil will come back in.
