Is The Chapel Veil Coming Back?

i think girls in veils are the cutest things in the world. it also makes women prettier, imo.

This is Cardinal Mahoney’s depiction of The Blessed Mother without a veil at his Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles. When I saw this in person I wasn’t offended because I thought the statue was a male looking angel guarding the front door. It never occured to me that this was supposed to be the Blessed Mother herself, with the moon under her feet. I guess he thinks that this can be a model for those who want to imitate Mary. I think the chapel veil will come back.

Wait… Mary without a headcovering?

Personally I think that statue of the Blessed Virgin in Cardinal Mahoney’s cathedral is the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen…

I’ve been covering my head at Mass and in Adoration for years now. It was my own decision; my own calling. I wear a black veil, so as not to draw attention to myself.

I think it’s a shame that East is no longer East. But “spiritual” east is better than no East at all.

Some things were tossed out but not lost. “Spiritual” east is better than no east. The spiritual is real. Things are slowly coming around. It doesn’t seem that long ago that even monthly Adoration was a tradition that had been abandoned altogether.

In my area, I’ve seen more younger women wearing a veil, but it is not the norm. When I can, I will wear mine. I actually love wearing it. I can honestly say it is a special devotional thing for me. Although sometimes I do feel strange at certain churches when I’ve received weird looks from other people at mass. I don’t want to draw attention to myself. So, I mostly just wear it now to a TLM. I had asked about wearing it when I cantor for the NO mass, but after speaking with my priest for advice, I decided against because it may come across as me making a “statement” which is totally opposite of why I wear it.

Well I still have a collection of old chapel veils and hats, but I don’t see wearing a headcovering ever coming back big until and unless there is a change in society. When headcoverings were a mandated discipline at church, most women still wore hats frequently. They wore gloves too.
I’ve never heard wearing a headcovering being referred to as a “devotion” except on a few SSPX sites that are trying to promote them. It has always been called in the past a habit, discipline, custom or tradition. Usually a devotion is “to” something or someone. More important might be the idea of modesty coming back, at least at church.

Not only that, but what part of that statue helps anyone think of heaven or God, or actually anything at all higher than us. Someone really needs to climb up there, cover her head and add some color…but that is just my opinion.

How the artist was chosen for this commission is beyond me. I looked up his work on his website and most of it is obscene. Not only nudity, but women in indecent, degrading positions. The sculptor of the Blessed Mother above a Catholic Cathedral shouldn’t be a promotor of pornography. Giving him the commission didn’t bring about a conversion either, judging by his website. I am totally disgusted and sickened.

I have a desire to show reverence and respect to our Lord by wearing a head covering/veil but feel if I did at my church, I would be drawing attention to myself and that’s not what I want. I have attented a Latin Mass (out of town) where the majority of women wore veils. I would really like to see this traditional practice ressurected seeing it is based on sacred scripture.

The church in my parish was built well before Vat II - the priest only faces literal East if he faces the congregation. Pre Vat II he would be facing West.

But how much of that part of scripture is based on cultural norms of the time?

That’s a debate for another thread… actually, there’ve been many threads asking that specific question 😉 Unfortunately, they can get sort of heated…

Not in this neck of the midwest, and then only over a 20-25 year period.

Count me out BTW.

I am a convert to Catholicism, so I have a difficult time understanding why wearing a veil is any more “devout” than not wearing one.

Also, what does “looking pretty” have to do with anything? Isn’t this a vanity?

I seriously doubt the veil will come back in. I think there are a lot of women like me who can’t make a connection between what we wear and our spirituality.

Hey Cat!
The veil is not more devout. It a private devotion that is grounded in the scriptures.
And the veil is not about looking pretty. Guys may think so, but that’s cause they are guys 🙂 We women know that it means more.
And the veil is making a resurrgance. Many young ladies, like myself, are drawn to the scriptural and cultural history of the veil in addition to the statement that it makes.

Basically- when one veils, it is a testament to the Real Presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.
Women to do have to veil, it is no longer required. Those of us who do have been called to it. If you want to veil, that’s fine. If you don’t want to, that’s fine too. It’s all up to the individual woman.

Well - if the sales on eBay are any indication, you are extremely wrong on this point! I keep a daily eye on them (I have an automated search set up for me), and trust me, they are selling like hot cakes.

At my own parish there are MANY women who cover their heads for Mass - regardless of whether it is a NO or TLM. I’m one of them.

The veil is certainly making a come back - a slow one perhaps, but it is coming back. Women who have had to live in a world of feminist ideals and images are finally taking their role as truly feminine and obedient women back from the feminists who know nothing about what it means to be a woman as Christ intended. And this is one of the ways we are doing that, by going back to a devotional practice many find very beautiful and spiritually fulfilling - regardless of what anyone else my think or feel about it.
