What I’m suggesting is that Europeans want to keep the Church European. I’d be fine with a pope from any other continent just to shake that crowd up.
Remember though that there are huge differences in Europe.
Eg, between Italian ways and mentality and German.
I have now for the first time had a Polish Pope and a German Pope.
We are already shaken up and have always been:D

Heaven: where the police are British, the cooks French, the mechanics German, the lovers Italian, and it is all organized and run by the Swiss.

Hell: where the police are German, the cooks British, the mechanics French, the lovers Swiss, and it is all organized and run by the Italians.

:rotfl:

I think Greece might have a role replacing the Swiss in Heaven and the Italians in Hell!

GRRRRR isn’t American hedgemony in the political and economic spheres ENOUGH? When will it end? 😃
If a Cardinal from the United States were to be elected Pope, the suspicion would be that the CIA had a hand in it.

No, thank you. There are many Cardinals from whom to choose who would not carry that suspicion as part of their baggage.

Well, the Church’s main powerbase has sorta been in Europe for a little while. 😉

That never gets old, for some reason. 🙂

I’m proud of being American, but for me, no, I’d rather not see an American pope.

If there’s any kind of conscious individual choice in the matter, I’d like to see fewer Italian cardinals and more Asian and African cardinals.

In which case I would say – who cares what conspiracy theorists think?

We’re not talking about a small number of conspiracy theorists; we’re talking about the Catholic Church and its influence in the world. There would be more than the usual nutters who accept a conspiracy. I think that a great number of ordinary people would find reason to believe such a plot by the U.S. intelligence services.

So you are saying that the CIA is capable of dictating the results of a conclave?

In a million years. Contrary to public belief the CIA barely have influence in their own country.
They aren’t supposed to. They aren’t a law enforcement agency. Their mission is to gather intelligence on foreign entities.

By infiltrating the Conclave?!

That sounds like a bad Dan Brown novel. No wait, scratch that. Any Dan Brown novel. Using the word bad suggests there are good ones.

Cardinal Dolan is awesome, but all this media talk about “next popes” is very silly, if not downright tedious. It also smacks to me of disrespect for the currently reigning pope, whether or not it’s intended.

The conclave elects popes, and we are not privy to their inspirations or judgments about that. What’s the point? Any cardinal can be elected pope. In fact, any Catholic male who is eligible to be ordained a bishop can be.

On what basis do you make an assertion like that?

Not sure if infiltrating a conclave is really high on the CIA’s list of priorities, but, yes, it does sound like someone out of one of those tacky Dan Brown “novels”.

Then that would make them by definition … conspiracy theorists.

That’s one heck of a bunch of conspiracy theorists. But, I am personally convinced that there’ll never (probably) be an American (U.S.) Pope.

Same may have been said about Poland and Germany not too long ago, especially in light of relatively recent history.
