Is the "emerging church" a threat to both Catholicism and Protestants?

I went to an Emerging Church yesterday…and there were lighted big letters that stated, “L I G H T” on the stage…and lots of lights strung along the top of the stage.

The pastor was wearing one of those rolled up muscle men shirts and he wore a beard…and he made very good points…I was introduced to him as a Catholic and he was shocked but then it all made sense because I was sitting there like a bump on the log.

I told him our posture is more adoration because we have the physical presence of Christ on the altar.

But I also told him he repeated Living Revelation…I heard from the Pope in that we are not to separate from those we disagree with or do not share same morals with…but to enter into dialogue with them…

So I told the pastor he was saying some of the same things as the pope and I told him I made the sign of the Cross at the end of his service…

I see these people reaching out to those who are in no church…who drive by and see signs, like ‘are you saved?’…and so on…one liners that carry alot of weight and perhaps may be the means these souls attend such gatherings.

The Emerging Church people can really relate to the mindset of the unchurched today…even if they come across as Christ as their Buddy…but…as repeating P Francis’ exhortationg…I met the pastor, found common ground with him, blessed his work and moved on…

I looked back at the pastor and he looked in shock…don’t know if that was the Holy Spirit working in him…but when I first mentioned the pope…he had a little shadow cross his face…but when I said how he said the same as the pope…he gave this big grin…

Just to point out to people again, since his name keeps coming up in this thread, Joel Osteen is not associated (either by others or by himself) with the emerging church movement. Names that are associated with the emerging church are Brian McLaren, Rob Bell, and Tony Campolo.

The “emerging church” is not a synonym for “evangelical megachurch” or “feel-good preaching.” It’s an actual movement designed to re-think how we “do church” in the 21st century.

This is what I discovered. Thank you.

I also discovered that in 1950, Pope Pius XII recognized some of the issues associated with what is now referred to as the emerging church movement where we “re-think how we ‘do church’ in the 21st century.”
Information source. Paragraph 11 and following, Humani Generis.

Going back further in time, I found warnings about “modernism”.

Certainly, someone can correct my observations …
It appears to me that one reason some, not all, Catholics in general are not aware of the dangers of the “emerging church movement” is that the similarity to current cultural and scientific modernism is not recognized.

One of the dangers to any Christian Church which claims authority from Sola Scriptura to Ecumenical Councils is the watering down or denying annoying teachings in order to be in fellowship (communion) with other Christians. Humani Generis, paragraph 11 begins: “Another danger is perceived which is all the more serious because it is more concealed beneath the mask of virtue.” In paragraph 12, the Pope refers to the enthusiasm for an imprudent “eirenism”. Those familiar with the early history of the Catholic Church know that there were battles over Divine Revelation. These were resolved by the guidance of the promised Holy Spirit. Chapter 14, Gospel of John. Apparently, some, not all, current Catholics have forgotten about the wolves in sheep’s clothing. As clever as they are, these wolves cannot update Divine Revelation to comport with modern culture. But, these wolves do cause havoc among some of the sheep. From my perspective, attemps to water down or deny annoying difficult Catholic doctrines are currently present. This “movement” may not be known as emerging Chrisitanity; however, it operates in a similar manner.

I don’t know why our understanding of God should remain stuck in the first century or in 600 BC.

I am curious. Please, which “understanding of God” are you referring to? I have seen a variety of “understandings” since I landed on CAF. Thus, my sincere curiosity as to which one you are referring to?

Actually the City of Rome and it’s history has not contaminated the “original Church of Christ”.
Technically the Church is NOT named the Roman Catholic Church…but is just The Catholic (Universal) Church. The Western Church, or the Latin Rite was given the name “Roman” by Protestants during the Reformation. Over time, the term has simply become associated with the Latin Rite Church - or with the Papal office.

As regards the Bolded…You know you are going to be taken to task on this…:slapfight:
What Core has the Catholic church “miss(ed) out on”…

Amen

Peace
