Is the Jewish Messiah (Moshiach) about to return?

Yesterday someone sent me this link youtube.com/watch?v=Dw3c7bJZrtw - a talk given very recently by Rabbi Anava, in which he claims that the Jewish Messiah - Moshiach is about to return , possibly in the next few months, if not next few days! If you watch the video, he makes a pretty interesting case from texts in the Torah.

I am curious how this prophecy of the Moshiach’s coming fits into Christian eschatology - especially for evangelical Christians who seem to be very close to Israel and believe a lot in Jewish scripture/prophecy.

If someone claiming to be Moshiach does come very soon, how will/should Christians and the rest of the world welcome him? Is a another ‘Son of God’? Or is he a just a Prophet? Is he a precursor to the Christ’s Return or will he be as powerful as the Christ himself?

Any comments are appreciated.

Of course, Christians believe that Jesus is the Messiah. Yet, because of the Second Coming of Christ, He will return and perhaps be proclaimed as the Messiah by some Jews. To a Christian, at least, there need not be a contradiction.

Are you saying Moshiach who will return is the same as Jesus? I don’t think Rabbi Anava is saying that at all. He is expecting someone quite different.

Certainly, Jews (and Rabbi Anava is no exception) do not believe that Jesus is the Messiah. We both believe that the Messiah is going to return/arrive, though, so the belief is not contradictory if we interpret it as a Christian belief. And then, you’re right, they are expecting a non-Jesus Messiah!

However, Judaism is quite different than Christianity and not some “Proto-Christian practice” as some seem to posit.

So what happens if a real non-Jesus Messiah comes in the next few months? What will Christians do? Will they ignore him or reject him or fight against him?

No one knows for sure when the Messiah will come. Any Jew, including a rabbi, who says otherwise is mistaken. Some do say that when the world is at its worst (or at its best) is a sign that the Messiah will appear. Others point to any time before the sixth millennium of the Hebrew calendar since, according to tradition, the universe was created in six days. Some Orthodox Jews say any day the coming of the Messiah is possible. But the exact time, or time period, is unknown, and there is no need to speculate.

When Moshiach returns, it will be Jesus. Anyone who doesn’t have the scars and yet claims to be Moshiach is a phony.
 
Moschiach, as understood in Judaism, cannot “return” as he hasn’t been yet.

Of course, such wouldn’t involve us as we are in 5776.

I think it sounds interesting, and it may involve us since the theory has it that the Messiah may appear any time between now and the year 6000 but not after. Personally, I don’t put too much stock in any of these views.

I think I may have misunderstood - the Rabbi said that Moshiach will come soon and the Jews will return to the Torah . But you may want to watch the video it is quite interesting. He sounds quite rational and serious.

We’d ignore him.

There’s nothing there for non-Jews to reject. Other putative “Messiahs” have come and gone after the death and resurrection of Yeshua Ben Joseph in 3790. They went unnoticed by Christendom and faded away.

And as someone remarked, “fighting” in the armed bloody sense wouldn’t be in the cards.

But if he is indeed some kind of Messiah, large numbers of people may start following him, so he may not be that easy ignore. It will be quite interesting if that happens.

Of course I believe Jesus fulfilled prophesies and He in turn promised to Return… So you have a recurring theme in revealed religions from Judaism to Christianity and Islam as well as in my opinion the Bab and Baha’u’llah to the present day.

The Messiah usually is denied and castigated, abused and martyred.

The judgement is on us to investigate and decide whether the prophecies have been fulfilled.

‘My fears are for Him Who will be sent down unto you after Me’.
Baha'u'llah said He feared for the next Manifestation Who would appear in no less than a thousand years.

Remember that a “false messiah” of sorts is part of the Christian prophecy tradition, so we’d be prepared.

So in your teachings, nothing would happen before the 2880s AD/ 6640s Jewish.

Whereas in Christian prophecy IHS can return, or the Jewish Moschiach come, at any time.

We shall see.

The Messiah returns for each and every one of us, when our soul is required, when our time has come. We all have our own eschatology, we all have our time, when Jesus Christ returns to judge us, as He was seen go.
