Is the Jewish Messiah (Moshiach) about to return?

I am curious how this prophecy of the Moshiach’s coming fits into Christian eschatology - especially for evangelical Christians who seem to be very close to Israel and believe a lot in Jewish scripture/prophecy.

If someone claiming to be Moshiach does come very soon, how will/should Christians and the rest of the world welcome him? Is a another ‘Son of God’? Or is he a just a Prophet? Is he a precursor to the Christ’s Return or will he be as powerful as the Christ himself?

Any comments are appreciated.
Catholics, and most other Christians, believe that Christ, the only begotten Son of God, was the messiah prophesied in the Old Testament. There can be no other. Christ is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End.

See the Catechism of the Catholic Church on Christ:

I understand what Catholics believe. I am just wondering how they will react if some other non-Jesus Messiah appears in the world tomorrow and starts getting a large following and performs major miracles etc. It will be quite interesting to see.

Not possible

False miracles have occurred since the priests of Pharaoh Rameses tried to flummox Moses.

The one thing false miracle workers can’t do is overcome death.

OK, then we can just wait and see what happens. But you may want to watch Rabbi Anava’s video, he is quite impressive.

If what he is saying is true, the event will really shake up the world. The attitude of the evangelicals will be interesting since they seem to have thrown their lot with Israel and Jews so much.

I don’t need to watch a video. I’ve read the back of The Book

There are any number of videos by very well meaning people of every religious type. 🙂 Evangelicals no doubt have videos telling us why Jesus will return any day now. When I was in the Assemblies of God we expected Jesus to return at any moment. This is nothing new, and the rabbi isn’t telling us anything new, either, but he’s wrong and time will prove him wrong, dear man.

When Jesus returns there will be no doubt in anyone’s mind that he’s returned and what is to happen then, for he is returning to judge the earth and her peoples. It will be an instantaneous occurrence that everyone will see and experience. He came 2000+ years ago, born of a woman to live as one of us when he was conceived and born of the Virgin Mary, but when he comes again, he’ll come as the King and Judge. Now he rules through his Church–his representative on earth. Until he comes again, each of us will meet him as our judge at our deaths–whether we believe in him or not. Those of us who have died and been judged a “good servant” will come again with him to “catch up” with us in the skies those faithful still living. Exactly how this will happen/look is something we’ll see when it happens. Like his first coming, much is dark to us, but we know enough to believe in the risen Christ and to do what he commanded us to do. All this is in the Bible for anyone with “eyes to see and ears to hear,” as Jesus so often put it.

I have seen other videos too, but they all sound like irrational, crazed people. This video sounds different - sincere, serious, no hate speech, no scary talk.

According to Rabbi Anava, Moshiach will be here in just a few months or less, so we don’t have very long to wait and see what happens or find out if he is wrong. Like I said these are very interesting times.

And I’ve seen videos by Christians that are very sincere and rational, too, but they can still be wrong if their theology is wrong. 🙂

Well, we’ll see, then, won’t we? 😉 The most likely scenario is that no one and nothing new will be coming our way. And as for the times in which we live—every time in human history has been an interesting time. People have been predicting the Moshiach, as desired by our Jewish friends, for centuries. Such predictions are common, but they come and go.

In Jesus’ day there were several vaunted messiahs. Acts 5:34-39 is a prime example. Gamaliel spoke to the Sanhedrin saying that others had had followings among the people, but when they died nothing came of it. So it will be in this case, as well. I don’t say this from hubris, but from knowing history and how God worked through his prophets, culminating in Christ.

You may be right. However, the way the world is going, we do need someone (Prophet/Messiah/Son of God, whatever you call him) to come right now and show us a way out of this chaotic mess. I for one would welcome such a person, no matter which religion he belongs to. Apparently we don’t have to wait long to know for sure in this case.

When our LORD returns, the “chaotic mess” of the human world won’t matter any more, just like the jumble and conflict of your life won’t matter once your eyes roll back into your head.

Eternal life overcomes everything else.

I would welcome your LORD (the Christ) just as much as I would welcome Moshiach, who Rabbi Anava is talking about coming very soon - either One is fine with me as long as they come soon. I just don’t want to have to wait till my eyes roll back into my head.

If you feel you would sincerely welcome Jesus Christ today if He physically arrived on the horizon, I feel we would be amiss to not inform you that He is presently available to you at this very moment in time. Jesus came to earth the first time to establish a relationship with each humann individual. We have this lifetime to welcome Him or dismiss Him. When He physically comes back, He is arriving as Judge of all man’s souls. At that moment it will be too late to welcome Him.

I agree! Now is the time

Oh my. Forgive me but that’s extremely short-sighted besides the clear way to be taken advantage of by some guru trickster–a return to the nonsensical '60’s in which people lost their lives, literally and figuratively, following some man who made claims that tickled their ears. Truth matters–it matters so much that God became man to give it to us.

Every age has been chaotic and troublesome–every single one. There’s no such thing as a world that isn’t a mess. We make it the mess it is–it’s up to us to know the truth and follow it to try to straighten it out. There’s no easy way to salvation–earthly or heavenly. It’s the way of pain and sacrifice and no other. Any other way is a deceit that leads to misery.

I’ve been unable to watch this video, 😦 but the text says you can watch the whole Near Death Experience at alonanava.comthis is long, and I’ve only made it part way through–I intend to finish it, though. . But it’s very interesting and I think it has some very important truths in it – especially about how we are God’s instruments on this earth and how our good works–especially helping one another-- link us to God. It reminds me of our Gospel reading today: How the rich man, because he had no good works, and he did not help Lazarus–the rich man had no links to God–so when he died, he could not go to God.

I have not reached the point in the story where Rabbi Alon Anava speaks about the imminent coming of the messiah–I hope to get to that point in the next few days. But it would go along with many Christian–both Catholic and non–who have had supposed revelations telling them that Jesus is coming back soon. To the Jewish people it would be the first coming, and to Christians the 2nd coming. But it is definitely the same person, as He is the one sent by God.

When the anti-christ comes, those who do not belong to God and have refused to love and follow him, will be led astray. They will only be following what they have already chosen–disobedience to the one true God–the God of the believing Jews and the believing Gentiles. IMHO

Just FYI, the coming of Moshiach is a separate video from the near death story.

There is no need to prejudge this person. We can evaluate him with an ‘open mind’ if and when he arrives.

Also, the mess in the world this time is a special one. We are on the brink of some kind of disaster in practically every aspect of life. We definitely do need a Savior right now.

For me, it does not matter if the Savior is Christian, Jew, Muslim or a Hindu. A messenger from God has no religion.

There is Jesus in my life already, as there are many other Messengers/Sons of God.

I don’t believe it is necessary to be a Christian or Catholic to have Jesus in your life. So his arrival in person will not be too late for me (in any case I don’t believe his Second Coming means the end of the world)
