Hap. You asked/stated . . .
A Protestant’s argument against the Catholic Priesthood. He used the following verses as text. . . . .
. . . In these five verses the Bible speaks of a New Testament priesthood. These priests are true Christians who have experienced salvation by grace through faith alone. All true Christians are priests and are able to offer spiritual sacrifices to God.
Catholic priests are ordained as “priests forever after the order of Melchisedek.” However, we are clearly told in Hebrews 7:24-“But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.” The Greek word translated unchangeable in this verse is ἀπαράβατον and literally means a priesthood that is in transmissible or cannot pass to another. Therefore, the sacrificing New Testament priesthood cannot be after the order of Melchisedek and is invalid. The proper New Testament priesthood according to the Bible is the priesthood of believers.
There is a sense that the whole premise of this argument is flawed and leads you (or someone else) to a wrong conclusion.

There is ONE Priest (in the fullest sense), Jesus Christ.

That’s WHY the “he” that is the priest has an “unchangeable” priesthood.

***That being said . . . . ***

That being said, we have a SHARE in this ONE Priesthood of Jesus.

Baptized believers have a share in that we are among the “common priesthood of all believers” (as CCC 1268 discusses).

Ordained ministerial Priests or “presbyters” have a deeper share of Christ’s one Priesthood.

And “overseers” or “Episcopoi” or “Bishops” have an even greater share in this ONE Priesthood of Christ.

All the verses you showed merely pointed out the EXISTENCE of a priesthood.
I Pet. 2:5,9-“Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light:”
Rev. 1:6-“And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.”
Rev. 5:10-“And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.”
Rev. 20:6-“Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.”
WHY do you think a priesthood “of God and of Christ” is necessary?

Because Jesus set it up that way that’s why. Jesus wants us to function IN Him.

What do Priests DO (generically speaking)?

They offer sacrifice to God.

In Catholicism we offer sacrifice to God, in differing capacities to be sure, but we are called to exercise this Priestly ministry (in the sense we are called by God).

If this doesn’t help, Hap, I’d be happy to go into this deeper.

God bless.

Cathoholic

ROMANS 12:1, 4-5 1 I appeal to you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. . . . 4 For as in one body we have many members, and all the members do not have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.

PS

You are a priest forever on the order of Melchizedek, means Jesus’ Priesthood is NOT based upon mere flesh and blood lineage.

Jesus Priesthood is NOT PREDICATED UPON being of the Tribe that Aaron was from (as Jesus was NOT from the Tribe of Levi as Aaron was).

Melchizedek was not a Levite (as there was no Levi then).

We don’t even have a (Biblical) genealogy for Melchizedek.
(And Hebrews explains that was on purpose.)

Jesus is a Judaite (a Jew). Jesus is of the Tribe of Judah.

So when the Psalmist tells us about the Priesthood of the Messiah (and Hebrews echoes it), we know NOT to expect a mere Levitical Priesthood that was based upon a natural genealogy.

Jesus is a Priest forever NOT on the order of Levi (flesh and blood).

You do NOT need to be a “son of Aaron” concerning this Priesthood (kohen or cohen or plural; kohanim).

Jesus is a Priest forever on the order of Melchizedek (which negates mere flesh and blood genealogical relationships in the equation).

That’s almost certainly WHY they did not refer to priests as kohanim in the New Testament. (They were referred to as prebyters).

Hap.

Here are some catechetical items to fill out what I said yesterday.
**The one priesthood of Christ **
CCC 1544 Everything that the priesthood of the Old Covenant prefigured finds its fulfillment in Christ Jesus, the "one mediator between God and men."15 The Christian tradition considers Melchizedek, “priest of God Most High,” as a prefiguration of the priesthood of Christ, the unique “high priest after the order of Melchizedek”;16 "holy, blameless, unstained,"17 "by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified,"18 that is, by the unique sacrifice of the cross.
CCC 1545 The redemptive sacrifice of Christ is unique, accomplished once for all; yet it is made present in the Eucharistic sacrifice of the Church. The same is true of the one priesthood of Christ; it is made present through the ministerial priesthood without diminishing the uniqueness of Christ’s priesthood: "Only Christ is the true priest, the others being only his ministers."19
Two participations in the one priesthood of Christ
CCC 1546 Christ, high priest and unique mediator, has made of the Church "a kingdom, priests for his God and Father."20 The whole community of believers is, as such, priestly. The faithful exercise their baptismal priesthood through their participation, each according to his own vocation, in Christ’s mission as priest, prophet, and king. Through the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation the faithful are "consecrated to be . . . a holy priesthood."21
CCC 1547 The ministerial or hierarchical priesthood of bishops and priests, and the common priesthood of all the faithful participate, “each in its own proper way, in the one priesthood of Christ.” While being “ordered one to another,” they differ essentially.22 In what sense? While the common priesthood of the faithful is exercised by the unfolding of baptismal grace --a life of faith, hope, and charity, a life according to the Spirit–, the ministerial priesthood is at the service of the common priesthood. It is directed at the unfolding of the baptismal grace of all Christians. The ministerial priesthood is a means by which Christ unceasingly builds up and leads his Church. For this reason it is transmitted by its own sacrament, the sacrament of Holy Orders.
You said:
The Greek word translated unchangeable in this verse is ἀπαράβατον and literally means a priesthood that is in transmissible or cannot pass to another.
This is exactly what the Catholic Church teaches.

Christ’s priesthood does not “transfer” or “pass” to another person.

But the Catholic Church ALSO harmonizes the other verses (some of which you presented) about priest**S **(plural).

And the Catholic Church ALSO has the proper understanding of “participation” in that ONE Priestly ministry of Jesus.

HEBREWS 13:15-17 15 Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise, the fruit of lips that confess His name. 16 And do not neglect to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. 17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch over your souls as those who must give an account. To this end, allow them to lead with joy and not with grief, for that would be of no advantage to you.
These are priestly functions of the priesthood of all the faithful.

Such arguments are often impossible to overcome, as those who attack Christ’s Church come from a life-long tradition which teaches that one’s personal opinion is:
  1. Extremely clear from the scriptures and,
  2. Therefore, is binding on all other believers.
This is the elephant in the bible alone living room.

EDITED FOR SPACE BY PJM

Rev. 20:6-“Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.”

In these verses the Bible speaks of a NT priesthood. These priests are true Christians who have experienced salvation by grace through faith alone. All true Christians are priests and are able to offer spiritual sacrifices to God.

Catholic priests are ordained as “priests forever after the order of Melchisedek.” However, we are clearly told in Hebrews 7:24-“But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.”.

And we have the more firm prophetical word: whereunto you do well to attend, as to a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Understanding this first, that no prophecy of scripture is made by private interpretation. For prophecy came not by the will of man at any time: but the holy men of God spoke, inspired by the Holy Ghost.

“Therefore, beloved, since you wait for these, be zealous to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. And count the forbearance of our Lord as salvation. It is indisputable that Christ Ordained and commanded the Catholic Priest hood, and that HE had a precise reason for doing so as demonstrated above. Further this ought not be a surprise as Jesus was just modeling & perfecting] what He had Ordained in the OT with the Priesthood of Aaron and his sons.

Lev.6:22 The priest from among Aaron’s sons, who is anointed to succeed him, shall offer it to the LORD …
