Chanted a capella. Our priest has a lovely voice that he uses in God’s service. The rest of the parish, however…well, we have different gifts.
I wasn’t born until ‘83, but I remember from my own childhood that my pastor used to sing various versicles of the Mass (like the “The Lord be with you” and “The Mass is ended…”) but slowly stopped doing so. I think when the NO came out there was probably a lot of carry-over in priests’ manner of celebrating, so they would have kept singing most of the parts they sang in a missa cantata/solemnis before. They just slowly stopped as they became more removed from that time, though, and from the liturgical ideals. The liturgical ideal is still that basically all of the Mass be sung.In the early days of the Novus Ordo, it seemed like it was common to sing the Our Father. The singing was usually accompanied by the organ. Now, I can’t remember the last time I heard it sung. Was there a ruling or directive that came out and discouraged this practice?
I hope you are joking. If not, then that is a very sad and lamentable treatment of the Lord’s Prayer. Singing it to the tume of “I Don’t Know how to Love Him” is even worse. In the Sunday Mass we usually just say it, but at the Youth Mass it’s sung to the tune of “Auld Lang Syne”.
