Is the Our Father Sung in Your Parish?

Chanted a capella. Our priest has a lovely voice that he uses in God’s service. The rest of the parish, however…well, we have different gifts. 😉
 
Depends on who is saying the mass and what mass it is. We recite it as well as chant it a capella. We have a Latin NO twice a month and it is always chanted a capella in Latin.
 
It’s always sung with organ accompaniment at all Sunday Masses except the 7 am Mass- except during Lent. Then we just speak it. Same thing goes for Holy Day Masses.

I wasn’t born until ‘83, but I remember from my own childhood that my pastor used to sing various versicles of the Mass (like the “The Lord be with you” and “The Mass is ended…”) but slowly stopped doing so. I think when the NO came out there was probably a lot of carry-over in priests’ manner of celebrating, so they would have kept singing most of the parts they sang in a missa cantata/solemnis before. They just slowly stopped as they became more removed from that time, though, and from the liturgical ideals. The liturgical ideal is still that basically all of the Mass be sung.
 
Our priest says it - in Irish. Whoever knows it in Irish joins in. It’s a long time since I’ve heard it sung.
 
we have always said it out loud, never have we sung this, it would be nice.
 
We have one priest trained in Rome who chants it a capella all the time. The others mostly don’t.
 
Chanted a capella, intoned “Our Father” by the choir mistress (a classically-trained vocalist) up in the choir loft in the back of the church.

depends on what Mass I go to. If its Sunday, I think we usually sing it. Saturday Vigil Mass we usually recite it.v
 
I said no, because for the last 5 or 6 years we haven’t. I’m thankful for that since when we sang it before it was to the tune of “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” from Jesus Christ Superstar, which doesn’t fit the words and brings to mind the lyrics “He’s a man, he’s just a man, and I’ve had so many men before, in very many ways, he’s just one more.” Not very fitting at The Lord’s Prayer.
 
We chant the Pater Noster in Latin at my parish.

I hope you are joking. If not, then that is a very sad and lamentable treatment of the Lord’s Prayer. Singing it to the tume of “I Don’t Know how to Love Him” is even worse. :eek: :eek: :eek: Why people take it upon themselves to mangle the Pater Noster is beyond me.

We don’t sing it in my parish; however, when I do catch a Papal Mass, I’ll sing along. The chant is beautiful. In fact, Pope Benedict XVI has the faithful at his audiences chant the prayer along with him at the conclusion of the General Audience. In fact, he’s had the Our Father imprinted in Latin in the back of the Papal General Audience tickets. Way to go, Holy Father! He definitely leads by example!👍 👍
