Is the path to priesthood easier in Canada for gay Catholic men?

I would question the accuracy of this article. It is factually incorrect. The author states that there are only three English speaking seminaries in Canada…he failed to miss the seminary here in the archdiocese of Vancouver (which as far as I can tell is producing orthodox and devout priests), so that makes at least four.

Are there quite a few gay Catholic men in that seminary?

Missed St. Philip’s in Toronto, too.

The question remains;

’ Is the path to priesthood easier in Canada for Gay Catholic men’?

Not.You’re quoting the Toronto Star-easily the most bigoted anti-Catholic newspaper in Canada. It has no credence whatsoever concerning things Catholic except among those who disparage the Church.

The Vatican was clear in 1962 and recently that men with deep seated homosexual tendencies not be admitted to the priesthood. Whenever a seminary corrupts itself it is not a true path.

The question remains-according to the Toronto Star a virulently anti-Catholic newspaper with an undisguised agenda against the Catholic Church and consistantly shows Her in the worst possible light have any credence when it comes to reporting on Catholicism?Of course not.Take anything the Star says cum grano salo-actually take a Laker full:rolleyes:.

There’s absolutely no evidence of this. I am quite familiar with the Canadian seminaries, and they are all run by very solid faculty. Keep in mind the source - as mentioned, the Toronto Star is vehemently anti-catholic in its editorials.

I wonder if the author to the article, cited in the first post, has a good grasp of her material. As many pointed out, Mary Ormsby miscounted the number of Catholic seminaries in Canada, presumably not taking the practices of the missed schools into account. Also worth noting is that she is the Assistant Sports Editor for the Toronto Star. Ormsby does produce columns/features on an irregular basis, but its not her primary job.

The New York Times article she mentioned says this:
Many church officials have been reluctant to discuss the screening process, and its details differ from diocese to diocese.
nytimes.com/2010/05/31/nyregion/31gay.html?sq=seminaries&st=cse&adxnnl=1&scp=1&adxnnlx=1276268463-MjdyJD7TqgxGudYSAzWSAA

Ormsby’s article seemed to assume that all US diocese are equally rigorous in their screening process. I am not sure that is true. Certainly, the NYT article doesn’t make the claim. She suggests that Canadian seminaries are more tolerant than American seminaries. But that is a generalization which she doesn’t support with evidence. I am inclined to believe that in many US seminaries the attitudes expressed in her article are also held.

Only the TO Star could write an article on gay priests while exploiting Canadians natural moral superiority complex towards America. Two shots for the price of one means little fact checking was required. That paper isn’t fit to wrap fish.

If you love hockey, the Toronto Star is for you. It’s not a bad newspaper by any means, but keep in mind that the executives admit that it is a liberal newspaper just like the National Post is a conservative newspaper.

In fact it is a socialist newspaper as dictated by the Achison Principles which you can find on their site.

The Post is owned by the Asper family - long time Liberal supporters. When Conrad Black owned it the conservative viewpoint was prominent along with left wing contributions from people like Buzz Hargrove. You won’t find any contrary opinions in the Star or publically funded CBC for that matter.

The OP might have just as well been quoting the old PRAVDA which was well to the right of.the Toronto Star-which doesn’t report the news as much as editorisalise on everything concerning the culture of death as it is one of it’s biggest boosters.Sort of like a hick NY Times:rolleyes:

Not any more.It is not sinful to suffer from SSA,but it is sinful to break one’s vow of Chastity, just as it is for heterosexuial priests to break theirs

.Because the preponderence of the sexual scandal in the Church has been homosexual hebephiliac in nature, men with SSA are understandably being screened out.Not fair to the majority of SSA sufferers who would never break their vow of chastity but so much scandal has been caused that those poor men will be denied their vocation which is heartbreaking.

I believe it is prudent to err on the side of caution.

It’s not even good for hockey - they are constantly running down the god of hockey, Don Cherry lol.

This thread has essentially consisted in posts making the fallacious argument that since the Toronto Star is anti-catholic and biased, their argument here is incorrect (which is what was argued when the very liberal National Catholic Reporter first wrote about the problem with priest abusers in 1985 and which continued to be argued until the Church finally acknowledged it in 2002 [by the way]).

One poster said he knew about the seminaries and that this is not a problem. Everyone else does not seem to really know - all they know is that the Toronto Star is anti-catholic and therefore we should disregard the article. They are all just assuming that since the Vatican crackdown, “that can’t possibly be true”.

Well, I say it can be. Canada has always been and is still more “liberal” than the USA. For instance, standing at the consecration is still the practice in most parishes across this country (especially out west) - if a priest asks the congregation to kneel, he usually gets exiled to the smallest most distant parish in the diocese (if he is even allowed to remain in the diocese). It would not surprise me if there is truth to this article - but I cannot say that for certain. Just my experience of the Canadian Church (lived here almost all my life).
