I think the Swiss Guard needs to obtain advanced technology, such as fighter planes, etc., in order to protect the pope and those in the Vatican City State. Perhaps a general tax on Church members is in order? I think it would be fair, say to ask for $1 a month for all Catholics in the world, provided they are not in poverty. As for housing all of this defense equipment, how about making another treaty with Italy?

The Pope is ALWAYS in danger. In the 1990s, there was an abortive attempt by Moslem fundamentalists to kill JPII.

The Pope is still going to Turkey! What is the problem with these radicals? The Pope said he was sorry. Why do they want to kill? What did the Pope do? Nothing. I do not agree AT ALL about what these people are doing!!!(in a certain sense) All I care about is God, who has poured out his life for us.

Sorry Gilliam,

I meant all over the world. Maybe we have numbers on the last 6 years or so?

From the State Dept for 2005

Muslims bore a significant share of the burden of terrorist attacks in 2005. Of approximately 40,000 individuals worldwide killed or wounded by terrorist attacks, based on a combination of reporting and demographic analysis of the countries involved, at least 10,000-15,000 victims were Muslim, most of which were in Iraq.

You can search around the State Dept. site for reports for other years and add them up.

Is the Pope in danger? Yes he is today as he has been everyday. He is a public figure and they all are in danger. Look how many times President Bush has been burned in effigy. I think that all Popes have been in danger every day they go out in public. They have all said very controversial statements. Pope John Paul II irritated communist leaders with his political statements.

I think we need to pray for Pope Benedict because the extremists that he offends are very capable of doing great harm. They want to plan something big and what would be bigger than harming our beloved Pope?

Thanks Gilliam.

It is sobering to think that these numbers dont even include the goofball who is not working in direct connection with a “group”
like a guy who just gets mad burns an effigy and picks up a gun and shouts death to the infidel! and shoots someone in the back four times…

Note that many terrorist victims are Muslim.

Yes. I also wonder how many pregnant women figure into this as one life and not two when killed. Sheeze.

Muslims killing Muslims and all peoples of all faiths.

Is the Pope in danger?

We all are guys.

Some Islamic official had called for the death of the Pope.
Oh no! The Pope is in danger. I do not no what to do. We have to pray for the Pope. Pray!
I realize how very cynical I can be, but I will be very surprised if the pope makes it out of Turkey alive. If he is martyred while there, I’ll be tempted to spit in the face of the next person who tries to tell me that Islam is a religion of peace…

Ok, here’s some quotes to demonstrate that some Muslims ARE speaking out in favor of the pope. (This was written BEFORE today’s apology.):

"Turkey’s top Islamic cleric, Religious Affairs Directorate head Ali Bardakoglu, welcomed the Vatican statement.

“He says that he respects Islam and didn’t want to hurt the feelings of Muslims. I find that a civilized position,” said Bardakoglu in an interview posted on the Web site of Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine."

and…

British Muslims sought to calm the situation.

““We welcome his apology and we hope now we can work together and build bridges. At the same time we would condemn all forms of violent demonstration,” Muhammad Umar, chairman of Britain’s Ramadhan Foundation, a youth organization, told Sky News.”

From Al-Jazeera:

Ismail Haniya, the Palestinian prime minister, called on Palestinians on Sunday to refrain from sectarian strife.

“All Palestinian citizens must prevent all harm to all Christian churches on Palestinian land. Our Christian brothers are citizens of Palestine. They are Palestinians,” he said.

I will also add that several Muslims posted editorials on Al-Jazeera denouncing the violence and explaining the full statement of the pope.
Oh yes… a veritable flood of goodwill…

And there we go. People complain again and again that they don’t hear the moderate muslims say what they think, and on a rare occasion when the media bothers to say something, it gets met with a

If you have your fingers in your ears going ‘lalala not listening lalala’ you probably won’t hear the voices of moderate Islam, no.

Post 10. You can find out by clicking the new nifty blue arrow next to his name in the quote - that takes you straight to his post.

I hardly think that you can say that an acceptance of an apology that was made is “supportive of the Pope”

Its thanks for kissing our butts (in my humble opinion) and how one can see that as a form of support of the Pope boggles my mind- it is merely support of apologizing to radical mindsets that take offense where there was none!

As far as giving any credit to anyone for admonishing terrorist activity-

Its like you are giving an award out to a kid for cleaning their messy room.

You dont. That is what they SHOULD be doing anyway.

Too bad they are the only ones that can be cited here by rolltide.

Oh well, as they say - actions speak louder than words.

Their words are useless if they are not going to put them into practice.

Time will tell how long it will be before they forget those words.

Hopefully it will be a step forward and others will follow, but I think it is just a sound bite.

Well, it seems there are plenty of you that also have your fingers in your ears going “lalala not listening lalala” when the truth is being shown and told to you over and over again. Wake up.
