I will wait, of course, to hear his actual statements…as this is a very paraphrased statement, and I just don’t trust reports to get things about the Pope right… but as to this issue in general - we can’t say for sure MAN is causing any climate change (even Mars is warming up), even Cardinal Pell (of AUSTRALIA) has come out strongly against this notion… however, WE MUST treat our environment better than we do as stewards of God’s creation. To me, the Pope can teach that all day long, but to even begin to buy into Climate Change issue gives all sorts of ammo to people that want GLOBAL ONE CHILD POLICIES because having children has been supposedly linked to climate change.

Exactly. I just finished a thesis on the issue of global warming, and I should note that I went into the project as a skeptic. But in the end, despite historic warming trends and the like, the fact of the matter is that people are in the equation now. So many people live along coast lines and so many of the poor are dependent on consistent a climate to grow crops that we can’t ignore the issue. Regardless of who the IPCC points the finger at, it’s something that we, as Catholics, should take very seriously - from my point of view, it actually boils down to a simple matter of Christian charity!

The Swiss/German research article still claims that greenhouse gasses still, to some degree, still add to the global warming factor going on right now.

Me, I find it hard to disregard all the evidence put forward by the world’s top scientists by throwing it aside as some kind of underground environmentalist conspiracy to ruin the economy. Yes, I disagree with the more neopagan aspects of the movement, such as the negative growth enthusiasts, but I still see the environment as something that should be high on the agenda for protection.

Global warming by humans is the biggest scam in the entire world. Read these articles and you will discover how true man-made global warming is. As in it is so true.

Half of your articles are simply meant to deflect blame from humans - but I don’t care who is causing it if it is happening. All I tried to say was that, if the earth is warming up (which thousands of peer-reviewed journal articles suggest), then we should be concerned since so many populations are vulnerable to climate changes. Again, I make no claim as to what the cause is - in fact, I think may of the guesses that are being made today are premature. But you have provided nothing that refutes the work of thousands of scientists who say that climate change is real.

Could this all be part of a natural cycle? Sure, but the last time that the warming cycle hit its peak (the holocene maximum), millions of humans weren’t living along the coasts or dependent on regular precipitation to survive. That’s the real issue for me - we need to make sure that the poor and vulnerable won’t be killed by our unwillingness to think that we may have hurt our environment.

That was the point of my posts. It was to show that humans are not to blame for global warming, but rather global warming is a natural occurring phenomenon. I have no problem with protecting the planet, however there seems to be a false crisis put into play with the current idea that global warming is going to destroy the planet in the next 30 years. I find some people that chime up and down that humans are to blame for global warming never think for a moment that we naturally put more CO2 in the atmosphere every time we exhale. The earth itself emits tons of CO2 naturally everyday too.

Back in the 1950’s environmental engineers concluded that factories should be mandated to only exhaust water vapor and CO2 because those two were the most natural of anything factors had to exhaust and would be least harmful to the planet.

More and more scientists are coming to realize that the sun is more responsible for Global warming then humans are. If the sun is truly responsible for it then it must be a natural thing.

I think we must be on the same page then (well, almost). The journal articles I’ve read, including the fourth IPCC report, haven’t truly convinced me that humans are the primary cause - although I will admit that we have badly mistreated the environment in the past. But still, I don’t think its a case of humans causing all of global warming or none; no, I think we have contributed to it in some way (e.g. CFCs have been proven to damage the ozone layer) and should work to bring factory-emitted greenhouse gasses down to manageable levels.

Regardless of the validity of the whole global warming argument, I think that the Church should stay away from scientific debates. In the past there have been things like this, and some of them are still used as ammo by bashers today:shrug:
