I have been struggling with certain spiritual issues related to my thoughts. My Godparent, who is a priest, has recommended me to write a thought diary and to tell him more about the thoughts when I see him again. I’m not sure if I should trust him with sharing my darkest thoughts. The last time I saw him, I asked him for help regarding these issues and I gave him a general picture. Is it normal for a priest to make such a request? Shouldn’t it be left to Psychologists? Why would he want to know my thoughts?

As your Godparent, he has accepted responsibility for your spiritual growth. As well, you are speaking with a doctor of souls. He can not only counsel you, he can absolve you of your sins. He has heard them all before - just not from you. In you, he has a special interest.

That means that when I am with him, I must be completely honest with regards to the issues that I am facing, am I right? However, I am afraid that he will judge me the next time round I see him because the diary I am writing contains some of my darkest thoughts… Thank you!

If it is not spiritual, religious issues then he will guide you to who can meet your needs the best be it psychologist, therapist or whoever. As a priest he knows what he is allowed to do and when to ask a person to seek additional help.

One priest asked me to see my doctor as I was way too tired all the time. Blood work showed that everything was all right and it was my work situation that caused physical and emotional problems. Running away from God was the major cause of everything.

If you feel uncomfortable in any way don’t do it. Explain to him how you feel, even though he is your Godparent and your priest do not feel that you are obligated in any way for those reasons. Maybe it would be helpful to you to talk to another priest or if need be to a psychologist. I mean no disrespect at all to your Godparent priest, you may just be to close to him’ My prayers are with you. and say a little prayer to the Merciful heart of Jesus,He will guide you; God Bless you and grant you peace::🦋🦋

He’s fulfilling his role as Godparent. As a priest, he’s accustomed to speaking to people without repeating things. He of all persons is one you can trust. He’s trying to help you. I suspect you’re a little bit paranoid here.

But it’s ultimately your call. You are under no obligation to comply.
Best wishes.

Thank you so much for your reply! Yeah, I guess I am being a bit paranoid haha since I have trust issues. My only regret is not turning to him for help at the first instance; I trusted all the wrong people in my life until finally, I realised that he is the person whom I can trust. I would have seriously avoided a lot of troubles had I listened to my heart and asked him for help several years ago. I guess it’s better late than never, but sadly, damage has already been done.

Write things you are now comfortable with sharing. He just wants to know what you think not chase your secrets. Maybe you later you will write more.
Anyway to write all your thoughts down is practically impossible because I doubt you even remember, when you start writing at the end of the day, all of them.

Yes I only write the important thoughts! Thank you!

Odd that you’d say “is the priest’s request normal”, and not “Is my God parent’s request normal?”
