I know sometimes there are shorter versions of the Gospels and the priest may choose to read them for pastoral reasons, but is he allowed to shorten the Gospel when the Lectionary does not provide a shorter version?
Someone told me about a priest who read a shorter version of the Gospel on the XV and XVI Sundays (Ordinary time). It seems both Gospels do have a shorter version. Right?

But what baffles me  is that I was told that on Palm Sunday, he started reading the long Passion Gospel (not the short one that is read before the procession) in Church, but then he stopped rather abruptly and told the people: ‘you can read the rest in your Missals at home’.
He was not sick or anything, so nobody understood what happened. Was this right?:hmmm:

:blessyou:

Let’s assume he felt himself getting ill, and wanted to at least be able to consecrate.

One time when celebrating, a priest got as far as “This is My…” and literally could no longer continue. All he could do was to ask the Deacon to consume what was on the Altar.

The person who told me about this assured me the priest was not ill, because he looked fine and stayed a long time after Mass to chat with the people outside the building.

What I would like to know is where is there an official Church statement regarding this. Is a priest allowed to shorten the Gospel, specifically the long Passion Gospel on Palm Sunday?

Thanks!

I understand that you were “told” this, but it may not reflect the actual event.

There is usually if not always a short form of the Palm Sunday Gospel. This past year the Gospel was Matt 26:14-27:66 or Matt 27 11-54. Could it be the case that the short form was used and the people advised that they could read the longer form on their own, if they chose?
