Is the use of the cross in this Islamic advertisement offensive to you?

Hahahaha. To the disappointment of the Pope of Alexandria, it sometimes seems to be too chummy with the Jews, but actually Jewish itself? I should hope not, or else I know a lot of Catholics who are falling waaaay short of even the external observances! (Try to take away a Mexican’s chorizo for religious reasons and you’ll see just now NOT Jewish Catholics are!)

So what exactly is “Judeo-Christian worship?”
BTW, good catch in the other post. In Islam, Jesus never died. He ascended, as described in the New Testament.

Just for fun, I looked up the definition of Judeochristian: of or pertaining to the religious writings, beliefs, values, or traditions held in common by Judaism and Christianity.

By definition, Jesus has no part in Judeo-Christian worship because Jesus Christ is not in common with Judaism and Christianity. I’ll leave it to the reader to follow that fact to the logical conclusion or to ignore that fact.

Judeo-Christian worship is far older than that. It was brought to its fulfilment when God became man, but it didn’t start with the incarnation. As Catholics we draw heavily on our Jewish roots and we should never forget that.
Judeo-Christian worship is far older than Islam - 600 years older.

I saw this advertisement for an Islamic lecturer about the crucifixion of Jesus given by an ex Christian who converted to Islam. I found this picture to be very offensive to me as a Catholic because the Quran explicitly denies the crucifixion. I found the use of the cross in this case very unsettling does anyone else here feel that way or is it just me?
I do not find it offensive in the least bit. What I find more offensive are Jehovah Witnesses who teach they are Christians, yet deny Jesus divinity and the Trinity. I am more appalled by people calling themselves Christians and denying or rejecting many Christian beliefs.

I’ll say again, Islam is 600 years younger than the Early Church (also known as Catholicism.)

It is logical for any religion, who is 600 years younger than another, to rewrite Truth about Christ?

Having examined the image close up, I see nothing to offend me:dts:.

It shows the cross, yes. And I noticed the question mark after the word “God”.:ehh:

And I noticed that it said nothing else except to invite people to a lecture by a Muslim on the topic. You are given the choice to attend or not. All this is acceptable to me. But see my signature:shrug:

well I don’t consider the picture you put out to be a cross since it is upside down and I don’t watch very many Hollywood movies to begin with so I cannot really speak to the way Hollywood portrays the name of Jesus. The Islamic way of respecting Jesus and the Christian way are very different things. According to the Quran Jesus didn’t die on the cross so he never called out to Allah from the cross in the Quran. I am very familiar with this speaker and I have witnessed many debates like the one being advertised. I can tell you from experience that there are two goals first they use evidence from the Quran and sometimes the Bible to deny the divinity of Christ and then discredit the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. You don’t have to take my word I can provide proof if you want it
That’s the difference, are you serious? No one sees the cross without thinking of Jesus. I haven’t seen this movie, but 95% of R-rated movies contain numerous instances of Jesus’ name being abused. And, at least, Muslims don’t reference Jesus out of hatred for Jesus, unlike the case with Hollywood.

The difference is who is abusing Jesus’ name.

Without seeing the lecture, I can’t say what it’s all about, but certainly what you say will be included in the lecture. I suspect most of the lecture will be about trying to show how the Bible supports Islam, such as Jesus supposedly calling out to “Allah” on the cross.

The Quran is not split up into the Old Testament in the New Testament like the Bible but here is what the Quran says about the crucifixion

“They did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but (another) was made to resemble him to them…” (Quran 4:157)

“God lifted him up to His presence. God is Almighty, All-Wise.” (Quran 4:158)

…which Testament also describes his death and resurrection.

I think you nailed the same point I did–that it’s not appropriate to say Islam came 600 years after Judeo-Christian worship, which doesn’t exactly make sense. What’s common between the two, and what pertains to Judaism, is far older than just 2000 years, and I doubt Catholics would consider themselves to be Jewish. What is correct is to say something to the effect that Muhammad was preaching 600 years after Jesus, peace be upon them.

But maybe I’m just nitpicking. 👍

Didn’t Christianity “rewrite Truth” about God? Jews didn’t believe in the Trinity but Christianity came along and apparently rewrote God, no?

It is logical, therefore, to correct the mistakes of humans, no? 🙂

Indeed, the Qur’an denies that Jesus ever died.

Frankly, I would not be too much bothered by it. It is, ah, some Muslims function, and I expect they have to be different from us. It’s their belief and I cannot control that. Some of them do burn our churches and kill our religious but that for God to deal with them. And the Christian victims are martyred and blessed by the heavenly father.

Similarly they cannot control me on how I talk about Islam and Mohammad. I try to be nice in a possible way and respectful if I should discuss this matter with Muslims but my stand is obvious and it is different from them. If they should be offended without me being intentional then it is too bad. And vice versa. So that’s the thing that can happen between the Muslims and us.

Im sorry but I resent this remark. Christianity (Catholicism rather) didn’t rewrite anything. And since when did logic decide Truth about God? Atleast for me God is Greater than human logic.

I don’t find the advertisement offensive, just as i don’t think it is offensive to the Jewish population to call Jesus the Messiah.

I would like to see the day though in Islamic countries where non-muslims can put out a similar advertisement / seminar about Muhammad without offense.

yes I would like to see that day come as well but I cannot see it happening anytime soon:(

Offense, like tolerance, is a privilege that Islam grants only to itself, not to other faiths.

BTW, for the record there was one Muslim poster who was very offended by the picture on my signature. I said that was an excerpt taken from a Hollywood picture. It is not Jesus carrying the cross but an actor. He was not impressed and Jesus carrying the cross is an affront to him.

And I am not going to remove the picture in any way.

So there we are. So much about offence and it cuts both ways.

Yes, but then I find every use by any Muslim – in a lecture, or here on CAF, or anywhere – of any figure, symbol, or concept related to Christianity in order to advance or argue for Islam to be horribly offensive. Whatever happened to “To you your religion, and to me mine”? (109:6)
Agree.

What I dislike is when Muslims attack Christianity in order to try to prove Islam.
If their religion were true, it should be able to stand on its own merits, not always need to be compared with Christianity.

I lived in a Gulf Arab country and they used to show this weekly program in English and the main aim of it was mocking Christianity in bogus comparisons of the 2 beliefs.

Of course, no lecture questioning the greatness of Mohamed would be tolerated in any Muslim-majority country.

really that’s interesting that’s the first time I’ve ever heard of that happening. but I’m not surprised at all.
