Is the world overpopulated?

Overpopulation is actually a bit of a misnomer. It isn’t so much that the world is overpopulated. It’s just that population is concentrated heavily on some parts more than others.

If you took the gross sum of all the world’s land and divided it up to the 6-point-something billion human beings, there would be more than enough room for everyone. I saw the specific figures some time ago, and sorry I don’t remember what they were, but there is no doubt that if everything were averaged out, “overpopulation” is just not reality.

That being said, remember that all the world’s people aren’t uniformly scattered throughout the world. Many places have millions of people living there. Many other places are just inhabital. Humans tend to thrive where there is water, for example. Think of the river Nile. Humans also are not expected to go out and live in the middle of the North American deserts, so much to the point that the government buries nuclear waste there.

Now, from the differing levels of concentration, problems to arise from population. In many, many places, water is at a severe shortage. Some places are already in drought. Others will be in the next few decades. Mankind as of yet has not found a good, universally-practical way of solving this issue. There are some ways of trying to help it, like getting condensation from the air, purifying rainwater or de-salinising seawater, but again, they aren’t universal in their practicality. De-salinisation, for example, is really costly; even if you overcome that, you still have to worry about what to do with the leftover salt. If you dump it back into the ocean, it could raise the salt levels in there and kill off the marine animals and plantlife.

Differing levels of concentration also affect pollution. I won’t bother talking about how heavily-populated places would have loads of trash – that’s pretty self-explanatory right there. But, greenhouse emissions come out of some countries much more than others; how have these concentrations affected the ozone layer? I don’t know, I wish I did; would there still be this ozone disaster if the whole world released the same amount of greenhouse emissions and carbon dioxide at the same pace, would there be a hole in the ozone layer?

If I can add one more thing, in my opinion, the claims that abortion helps solve the overpopulation problems are really stupid. If they really cared about easing the overpopulation problems, they’d teach about abstaining and continence.

Rather, it’s as if the pro-choicers just tack on the overpopulation claims to make their case stronger. Don’t be fooled by that. Aborting kids isn’t the surefire way to fight the problem. Abstaining is. So far, I only recall one case where a woman abtained but still gave birth, but she doesn’t count – her son happened to be God.

Absolutely not is the world overpopulated. Think of all the open land you see when flying in an airplane.
Arguably Europe was more overpopulated in 1300, when the land could no longer support its farm population and the population of the squalid cities that dotted Europe. When the Black Death hit the continent in the 1340s, people died like flies.

Maybe I’m dreaming in a sci-fi world but, say all the available land became occupied with human beings, wouldn’t we look at the possibility of underwater cities or more space stations?

The world is not overpopulated. Yet OTOH the human race is not on the verge of extinciton either. It is right where it should be.

I have to disagree with us being where we should be. With the amount of abortions and thus human lives slain as a result of the culture of death I believe we are behind where we should be. As Mother Teresa said if we kill our unborn children should be surprised that we are killing each other (paraphrased).

I would say the world is overpopulated by half-educated rich white people from North America and Europe, who think theirs is the only way of doing things.

Gee, guess who tend to think the world is overpopulated–but the problem is in Asia, Africa, and Latin America?

Coincidence?

But if everyone were to get married and raise eight or nine children then we would face overpopulation. I’m not justifying abortion by any means but we are sustaining ourselves regardless of the number being aborted. So I stand by my statement that the world is not overpopulated and the human race is not on the verge of extinction.

Exactly! It is the UN who pushes its population control policies on these countries. The UN even pressured Nicaragua before it once again banned abortions.

Goofyjim is right–the world is not over-populated. Fly on an airplane over any part of the U.S., and most other countries, and the emptyness is striking. The are pockets of over-population, such as parts of China and India, but overall we’ve only begun to populate this planet. And there’s plenty of food, its just not always distributed properly. But we’re getting better at that. Roanoker

This is an unbalanced figure. We should have the replenishment rate figure to go along with it in order to have any meaning. Over 100,000 cu. ft. of water is spilled over Niagara Falls every second. Does that mean it is going to run out of water?

Can The Entire World Population Fit Within The Boundries of Texas?

LEGEND

1 Acre = 43,560 Square Feet

1 Square Mile = 640 Acres or 27,878,400 Square Feet (640 x 43,560)

——————–

World Population = 6,276,000,000 people

State of Texas = 268,601 Square Miles or 171,904,640 Acres (268,601 x 640) or 7,488,166,118,400 Square Feet (268,601 x 640 x 43,560)

———————-

Average Size 2-Story Home with 3-4 Bedrooms = 1,500 to 2,400 Square Feet (Thus 750 - 1,200 Square Feet is Needed on the Ground Floor).

This home would fit 5-6 people per house comfortably!

Therefore 150-240 (750 to 1,200/ 5 people per household) Square Feet of Ground Space Per Person is needed to fit 5-6 people comfortably in a 2-story home in the state of Texas.

——————–

State of Texas = 7,488,166,118,400 Square Feet/ 6,276,000,000 people in the world = 1,193 Square Feet Per Person is available for the entire world’s population to live in the state of Texas.

As noted above only 150-240 Square Feet of Ground Space is needed per person to fit 5-6 people comfortably in a 2-story home in the state of Texas!!!

You can double check my math!

There was a Peanuts cartoon in which Sally Brown commented: “*Everyone thinks that the world is overcrowded, but no one wants to leave.” *
But there are many willing to kill others to take thier space.

As to OP, the answer is NO!

By the way, your liberal college professors really get frustrated when you tell them about this!

“Square hectare?”

You do know that hectares are a unit of square measure, like acres, right? That’s like saying “square acre” or “cubic cc”.

Besides which, that figure is horse-hockey. I seem to recall reading somewhere that the way they arrived at that figure was by extrapolating a particular clear-cutting operation, on a comparatively small scale, and then treating it as though it was going on at a constant rate. In any case there was a whole load of statistical tom-foolery going on.

Remember, depending on how you gather your data, cigarettes save 180,000 lives a year.

Abortion and ABC are unacceptable but if a couple is unable to afford children there is nothing wrong with NFP. If times are rough economically and Catholic couples opt for NFP then the population goes down. When times get better they will return to having children. If this was the way things were done it would all balance out in the end. The world is not overpopulated or underpopulated.

the replenishment rate of a rainforest? you’re kidding right:eek:
