Look at:

CCC # 1864 "Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven."136 There are no limits to the mercy of God, but anyone who deliberately refuses to accept his mercy by repenting, rejects the forgiveness of his sins and the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit.Such hardness of heart can lead to final impenitence and eternal loss.

Something else to think about (From Mother Angelica):

MYSTERY AND FAITH
St. Augustine, one of our greatest minds in the Church, was walking on the seashore and he saw a little child. While he was walking, he tried to comprehend the Trinity: how there could possibly be three persons in one God. Further down the shore, this little child kept scooping a bucket of water and pouring it into a little hole on the beach. St. Augustine watched the child run back and forth, trying to fill the hole with water. Finally he said, “Son, what are you doing?”

The boy just looked at Augustine and said, “I’m trying to put the ocean in this hole.”

“You can’t. That’s impossible,” Augustine said.

“Neither can you understand the Trinity,” the child responded. Then he disappeared.

So remember when you come upon a mystery–either in your life, or in Scripture, or in the life of Jesus–your mind can’t accommodate all that is contained in the infinite, Holy God. Kinda like trying to put the entire ocean in a small hole, isn’t it?

Thanks for your help rydm39 it is helping, i still dont understand why the church adopts St augustines’ view, does anyone know of any resources on this?

Hi are their any biblical statements saying that all sins can be forgiven, and are through genuine repentence. I am confused about ‘blasphemy against the Holy Spirit’ and am afraid i may have commited it. I know that the chuch teaches that this is final refusal to repent, untill death, i just don’t know where the church gets this teaching from. Could anyone please help me?
1Jn2:2and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.

Setting aside the “and are through genuine repentence” scripture says He is the propitiation for our sins, but all of the sin in the world.

Romans 5:8
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Since while we were sinners Christ died for us, it can only mean all of our sins of the past, present and future. The question is not is your sin forgiven but rather do you believe Him whom sent Jesus as John 5:24 reflects.

Jn5:24"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.

Blessings,
Len

Pete,

In your original post you said:

Maybe your difficulty understanding the teaching isn’t the theology, but the forgiveness for what you have done. You have examined your conscience and seem truly sorry. St. Anselm’s proof for God states:

God is that which no greater can exist.
It is better to exist in reality than thought alone.
God exists in reality.

Do you think your sins are greater than God’s? Greater than his forgiveness?

Your question about why the Church adopted St Augustine’s view is a good one. I think it is part of Sacred Tradition and the Magesterium - the Church’s authority to teach.

Thanks for your help, i still dont understand why the passage cannot be taken literally though ‘whoever speaks a word against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven’. This is why i am having trouble with the concept of forgiveness for the literal act.

The sin against the Holy Spirit is an eternal sin. Jesus asked the jews to believe him for the works he did if not for his teaching. This is because the works are a manifestation of divine power and present a revelation of God that if rejected is an indication of a person eternally committed to their evil desires. Satan possessed the full revelation of God yet hated Him nonetheless. What more can God do? There is nothing more to know, nothing more God can reveal of Himself that could change the mind that hates Him after knowing Him. This is also what those who were teaching that the power working in Jesus was Beelzabub’s were doing. What more could Jesus do? Die at their hands and Resurrect. This is the final manifestation of Divine power. This is the reason the only sign He would give them is the sign of Jonah, the Ressurection. This is the sin against the Holy Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit is an eternal being and sin against Him is eternal. The Jews who taught that the power made visible to them was evil were demonstrating a trait that persons eternally committed to sin display.

Is their any solid proof for St augustines view, it’s still bugging me.

Pls help 😦

Answers to these may help:

Is cannon law infallible
Are their any infallible church teachings on this matter?
Are their any infallible pronouncements stating that all sins can be forgiven?

Thanks 👍

What kind of “proof” are you looking for? I thought in post 17 I already showed you how the Church Fathers are in agreement when it comes right down to it.

e.g an infallible document
or a bible passage stating that all sins can be forgiven or that Gods mercy is infinite.

Also can you please explain how the Church Fathers are in agreement? I though some thought it was a literal act of Blasphemy and could never be forgiven, am i wrong (i hope i am)?

I’m not sure an infallible definition has been made on that passage. I think there are like 6 passages or something that have been defined to have at least the specified meaning, like John 3:5 refers to Baptism, etc…

I don’t know that I read someone saying that literal, verbal blasphemy could never be forgiven, did you? Remember what I quoted from Isaiah. The ECF took slightly different angles, but all involved denying the power of the Holy Spirit. Including Augustine! And as I said, a person has to remain in that state.

Pete you are struggling with an issue that drove me to the brink of insanity, and the devil still uses it from time to time to scare me.
The blasphemy against the Spirit to which Jesus refers,
is a sin of such great and deliberate malice, and is committed repeatedly against the manifest operation of the spirit of God,
without ANY extenuating circumstance such as weakness, moments of great passion, moments of irrational anger, confusion, disorientation, heartbreak, frustration, misunderstanding, etc. The person committing this sin has no extenuating circumstance. The Pharisees didn’t see just one miracle and denounce it as not from God. In Matthew chapter 9 they make the same accusation against an EARLIER exorcism by Jesus. When Jesus mercifully heals a man with a withered hand, these men are “filled with fury” and take counsel together as to how they might destroy Jesus. This is planning and scheming against a man whose teaching is godly, beautiful and sublime, and which they had heard many times, and whose miracles are stupendous, immediate proofs that this man is doing God’s work and that God indeed is kind and good, and they still attacked those powerful miraculous works AND TRIED TO TURN OTHER PEOPLE AWAY FROM JESUS BY ACCUSING HIM OF BEING DEMON-POSSESSED.
A person, such as some of the Pharisees, who engages consistently in such a malicious, persistent sacrilege toward the visible expression of divine healing and kindness, is so
hard-hearted that he or she will never, never, never Repent.
So if you are sorry for what you have done and sincerely want to serve God and Jesus the Son, then please KNOW that that godly desire ITSELF is the action of the Holy Spirit within you.
Knowing THAT, you can put your fears to rest my brother.
The Devil will continually attack your mind to try and convince you that you have committed that sin. You’d be surprised at HOW MANY MANY MANY PEOPLE he attacks with this particular fear.
Your desire to serve the Lord is proof positive that you are not guilty of this horrific sin, because if you WERE, you wouldn’t give a darn and would be off probably starting your own cult.
God bless you,
Jaypeeto4

Thanks that helped it reminded me of the passage that the ‘Holy Spirit will convict the world of their sin’.

Also of the passage ‘none can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit’

However where do the early church fathers say you have to remain in the sin (apart from St Augustine)

I meant to say where do the early Church Fathers say you have to ‘remain in the sin’ nad not repent in order not to be granted forgiveness (apart from St Augustine)

That’s actually from Scripture. But you do have to repent. To refuse to repent would result in unforgiveness. I’m sure you can find passages that show God forgives those who seek forgiveness.

But anyway

Revelation 16:8-10 The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and the sun was given power to scorch people with fire. They were seared by the intense heat and they cursed the name of God, who had control over these plagues, but they refused to repent and glorify him.

Jeremiah 5:3 You struck them, but they felt no pain; you crushed them, but they refused correction. They made their faces harder than stone and refused to repent.

These are examples of those refusing to repent being damned, and Jeremiah also includes that they continue in sin by refusing “correction.”

This is still bugging me, i understand what you are saying but those are examples for other sins not this specific sin. Why would Jesus say ‘whoever speaks a word against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven’ i do not understand.

In the same place St. Chrysostom tells us, that someof those who had blasphemed against the Holy Ghost, repented, and had their sins forgiven them.

Where does it say this i can’t find it i would be gratefull of any help.

Sorry I didn’t feel like reading all the posts, but Pete, I too have often wondered if the Church’s (or Catholic’s) teaching on the sin against the Holy Spirit, is a bit self reassuring. Because if we lose hope, we tend to despair.

But I have often been wrong in interpreting the bible, and we do know how merciful God is? Just think of the cross.
