I am a cradle Catholic that unfortunately has come to a point in life that I no longer believe in God or any kind of higher power. I WANT to believe, but common sense, lack of proof, and constant hypocrisy in teachings and practice have lead me to realize that it is all make believe and religion is simply a psychological creation to help humankind deal with getting through life and to deal with ultimately ending life. Again, I say, I want nothing more than to believe because it is a sad place to believe that we are simply just a more advanced animal living only with the purpose of procreating and that’s it. So that has lead me to a point that I feel the only way I can re attain any form of faith or belief in spirits is to make communication with them. I want to try to communicate with only good spirits, but I have gotten so desperate, I am even considering ANY spirit. Keeping in mind that I don’t really believe in any of it, so my thought is that if I actually contacted an evil or bad spirit it will still be a good thing…because then I will be saved. I will have faith again. Because if there can be an evil spirit, then I will believe that there is good.

I was going to try a Ouija board but I recall that my Catholic mother advised that the Church was against it. Is there any “Church approved” manner to contact spirits/angles. Any advice I can get will be much appreciated.

There is prayer. But there is no “Church approved” way to summon a spirit or a dead soul to make it communicate with you or manifest itself, if that’s what you mean. Any such action would be considered immoral.

I’m trying to decide whether I should comment on the rest of your post. Without trying to prove anything, as a personal anecdote, I’ll just say that “thinking for myself” led me away from belief. Then thinking for myself more critically on the substantive questions led me back.

Yes, there’s a “Church-approved” way to talk to the angels and to certain “good spirits” known as Saints. It’s called Prayer. You may have heard of it.

If, however, you’re just looking to dial up an angel or spirit in hopes that you’ll get some message back that will make you believe, don’t be surprised if you get either dead silence or a demon on the other end of the line. They aren’t in existence to perform parlor communications tricks to convince you there is a God. You’re not going to get a miracle on demand. If you truly want to have faith again, you should be praying earnestly for it, not engaging in this stuff and especially not with the risk of calling up bad spirits.

Thank you for the response Wesrock. Why is it considered immoral to communicate with a spirit? Prayer is basically the same thing, I just have found that after 45+ years of praying with no successful outcomes, I need a different method of communication that might work.

Because you and I are too stupid to know what we are actually communicating with; or rather, the sort of being that is communicating with us. Your prayers work just fine. The problem occurs when we try to will extraordinary phenomena that give us answers in a way that is not the norm or which is fitting for people who are beyond our level of grace. Whenever you desire fun little spiritual experiences, there’s a lot of potential not only for self-deception, but for fun little demons to come along and give you such fun little experiences.

Lol. I won’t argue my level of stupidity…or rather ignorance. But my point is that if I get even a little communication with anything, then that will help give me a touch of faith that might be just enough to keep me going.

that will help give me a touch of faith
No. Faith is a supernatural gift, it is not an intellectual one. Your level of faith depends on your level of sanctifying grace. Want more faith? Stop sinning and merit more grace. Leave the desire to occult knowledge alone, because you will not have more faith, you’ll only have more confusion.

Prayer is a request for intercession from a faithfully departed person. Working with a medium is attempting to manipulate the spiritual realm at will. Prayer is safe, mediums open ourselves up to manipulation.

Gosh, I sense some serious anger towards me based on the smart aleck response you gave me Tis_Bearself. I am not joking and I am not trying to be nasty or disrespectful. I am a baptized Catholic in desperate need of help in my attempt to find God. Of course of I have heard of prayer. My goodness. Prayer has not resulted in any kind of spiritual results in my almost 50 years of life. If you can believe that prayer to God, or a guardian angle can result in a miraculous change in a favorable fashion in your life, then why should I not expect some other miracle through some other form of spiritual communication? Again, this is the hypocrisy I see over an over again in supposed Christian behaviors and actions. No disrespect intended. Just think about what you are saying and how that will be taken by your audience.

This is the kind of response that is where this usually ends up. You can’t think Faith, you have to be given it. I have always struggled with Faith. People who drank coolade and all died had Faith. Some people who have Faith believed they could play with poisonous vipers and end up dead. Faith to me is more dangerous than anything because it, by definition asks you to believe and follow regardless of what you know to be common sense or fact. If there is a God, God would know that by our design, we are created to question things and not accept something just because someone who claims to be a prophet tells you to believe it.

I have no desire for “occult knowledge.” I do want to communicate with a spirit. Even if only briefly to have some belief…or as you call it, faith.

Why would you think a “smart aleck” response means “anger”? Your question to me was just missing the obvious method of such communication.

Seems like you have a bit of a persecution complex. Good luck with that, hope you don’t fall into anything you wish you didn’t.

I mean no disrespect, but I can’t see how prayer is any more safe than any other form of communication…accept when you use another unknown or untrusted human being to help you. Then I can see where you open yourself up to being mislead or manipulated. Do you have some source that advises you on these matters, or is this just your opinion?

Communication with spirits is different than prayer in the fact that prayer is still directed to God. When communicating with spirits the focus shifts. It is too easy to be deceived into believing that one is talking to “good spirit” rather than the demonic. Good spirits only want to get us to heaven which is focused on God.

I think I understand what you are saying. Prayer is supposed to be to God, sometimes through the intercession of saints etc., but directly to God for the most part. How about if the communication was specifically inciting discussion or signs in “the name of God” to repeatedly ensure that the communication is of a good nature? And again, my thought is that the main intention of this communication is simply to attain proof of the spiritual. Once I had that, then I would refrain from further non-prayer type communications.

If there is no God, why would you think it’s logical to believe in good spirits? A truly logical person can see the evidence for God, not just in books or the internet, but in life. I will pray for you. Your guardian angel is trying to help you. Accept the help. FInd a kind priest and meet with him for direction at this critical time in your life. Look at a crucifix and see Christ;'s arms out to you, awaiting your embrace.
Ignore those who would call you stupid. We are all sinners. We all at times have doubts, but mercifully, God does not judge us according to our crime in this life. He extends his mercy and grace to us through liturgy, sacraments, good mentors, and grace.
Peace.

I don’t believe in either at this point, but I want to believe and am at the final stages of giving up completely in just hoping (or some may call holding on to faith). This is my last resort attempt to attain some sort of spiritual proof. Because I have those tiny bits of hope left, I want to do this in a safe and religiously acceptable manner, even though my lack of belief tells me that it really doesn’t matter. Again, I keep saying. I want to believe. There is nothing more desirable to me than to believe. However, the person I am will not allow me to blindly believe when there are no facts and no personal experiences to support my belief that there is a higher power. But thank you for your very kind intentions and suggestions.

I apologize for assuming you had anger towards me. I suggest that you do just a little self analysis as to why you are responding to some of these. I am a person in a deep dark place seeking fellow human being help. Ask yourself if you are trying to help me or to make yourself feel better about yourself. I am hurting, and yet your have a smart alek first response to me when I am in need, and then your second response is to debate your admitted smart alek response intentions and then further label and analyze me with a complex. Thanks, but I am sorry, this is not very helpful. I mean no disrespect to you and wish you well.

Prayer, pray the Rosary and ask Our Lady to bring you closer to Jesus.

Pray to God and add, if it is God’s Will. Our prayers get answered only then, if we are working to the Will of God, not our will.
God is not a prayer vending machine. People can pray for 30 , 50, 80 years for something. Don’t lose faith. Look at Abraham.

God tells us not to engage in the supernatural, and seers and spirits. Pope Francis tells us not to dialogue with the Devil.

We can, however, pray to our Guardian Angel

Thank you for your suggestions. I have prayed and prayer-begged to God/Jesus/Guardian Angel for decades. I have no intention of talking with the Devil. I just want a fully believable “hello” from any spirit that will let me know that there is a spirit. Then I will be good to go. What everyone is saying is that if you don’t get faith through “prayer,” you are pretty much out of luck. How human beings can live their lives like this is amazing to me. Ignorance is bliss and I wish I could just make myself follow along, but I was formed as a human to question things and to think logically. Just about every society of humans have had to create a deity to follow to help deal with those things we cannot understand or figure out scientifically and to help keep society in-check and in fear of a higher police force. I don’t know. Thanks again.

Ohhh, so that is where the Trinity comes into play…“three eyed gigglochimies.” Thanks superblue; you are a savior…little “s.”
