Just curious if there’s a saint like Bob Marley or any other one thats somewhat Rastafarian in lifestyle.

I think John the Baptist almost had dread locks. Does that count?

In truth, though, I think Rastafrianism is actually a sort of religion, maybe a distortion of Christianity, a big one. Let me check real quick at wiki…

an excerpt from wiki on Rastafari movement:

The Rastafari way of life* encompasses the spiritual use of cannabis**[6][7] and the rejection of the degenerate society of materialism, oppression, and sensual pleasures, called Babylon.[8][9] It proclaims Zion, in reference to Ethiopia, as the original birthplace of humankind, and from the beginning of the way of life calls for repatriation to Zion, the Promised Land and Heaven on Earth. This can mean literally moving to Ethiopia but also refers to mentally and emotionally repatriating before the physical.[10][11] Some Rastafari also embrace various Afrocentric and Pan-African social and political aspirations.[6][12]*

Ohh Dreads!

When Bob Marley smoked marijuana, he did it as part of a religious ritual that was part of his Rastafari religion. He didn’t smoke it just to “get high” as most people who use it do. But Bob Marley left that religion in his last years of life and converted to Christian (Ethiopian Orthodox). I think most people probably don’t know that he was a Christian when he died.

Is ok with marijuana consumption, a champion of the poor and a serious thorn in the side of the wealthy establishment i.e the man.
I’m just taking a guess, but since the church is against illegal drugs, I don’t think there is a pot head saint.

Rastafarians are strongly anti-Catholic and so are not likely to be canonized by the Catholic Church.

yay I’ll get to see him when I die!!!

Also the states i’ve lived in all had legal marijuana and had dedicated people fighting the opression of the man.

The Church does not canonize someone who lives a different faith. So Rastafarian would not be an option. Getting high is also a mortal sin. So it would be doubtful that a saint would do that either.
Personally I think Bob Marley has been hijacked by an immoral movement.

Just saying a “saint like Bob Marley” has an immediate reaction of concern.

What do you think is saintly about whatever you think about him? What imitates Christ and His Church?

The morality of a mind altering drug is not necessarily in the illegality of it. (though that certainly can be a factor of sin) it is in the actual compromised state of mind it brings on.

Who is “the Man”

I’m not aware of a saint that reminds me of Marley or one that smoked marijuana. However, the drug has only been illegal for a small number of years, and even then not everywhere. So we can’t rule out that there may have been a saint who used marijuana, or perhaps in the future one will be named.

Whelp, i’ll be keeping the priests busy in confession then lol
Joking aside I’m a huge marley fan and always vote for legalization when I get the chance for the tax revinue purposes. If people are dumb enough to destroy themselves on any substance so be it, but i’ll take potheads over alcoholics any day. That, and considering the chunk legalization takes out of the cartels budget as well as keeping real criminals in jail vs. potheads, well no suprise in how I’ll vote.
And hey, i’m new here and have issues I already freaked someone out a bit when they asked me to name the most saintly person I could think of and I said Bob Marley. He was a chill guy and loved people and made awesome music, ok in my book.

I was going on legality by state which is the first thing I look at. Oh, and “The Man” = corrupt gov’t establishment that we the common people tend to have little say in.

I’m sorry you feel that way. The Catholic Church teaches that getting drunk or high is a mortal sin. The problem with Marajuana is that you either get high or you dont. There is a dosage problem. There is also a huge misconception that it is better/worse than alcoholism. Both are addictions and both destroy lives and families. They are fruit of the same tree my friend. We don’t say"gee alcoholism is better than being a meth head so…" They are just bad. And being Catholic we are to obey a just government. Which the US still is. To do otherwise is a violation of the 4th commandment. Truly corrupt governments, like the one beheading Christians as we speak, are to be disobeyed. But rebelling because one likes to get high is foolish and sinful.

On a personal note, I am sorry you indicated your affection for pot. I see in your posting history that you have a family history of addiction. I would encourage you to seek some help, perhaps even secular help for your issues. I would also encourage you to see the Truth and immorality of certain people and things. Rather than falling for the lie you are being told.

Good luck to you.

I think there is some fairly substantial evidence that marijuana use does harm to the brain, but I know some debate this. Perhaps not very well, though.

Some are harmed more than others by using it, but I believe it’s an escape…a comfort that we seek that does not bring us closer to God.

I’ve never tried it, but I’ve been around a fair number of people using it in my presence, they always seemed so unbelievably dumb in their conversation and ability to speak, as if their IQ just dropped by at least 30 points.

Any love for the cannabis culture has to be carefully discerned. I know more than a few of my friends and family have been imbibers for literal decades. I just have a problem with people who make the whole legalization/imbibing/cultural issue their religion. Any talk about the negative aspects of using a drug (such as physical / emotional dependance, which can happen in some cases) brings up a furor of angry responses. It brings to mind something that a priest I really like would say, “Do you like pot more than God?” I think some of these people would categorically say yes. It seems to me that many of my friends think it literally cures everything from cancer to hangnails. I have to agree that in almost every case an inebriated (from alcohol) person poses much more of a personal or individual threat than someone who has smoked a joint but that still doesn’t make it something that one should do continually. (And believe me, some of my friends are continually, and I mean CONTINUALLY stoned. They wake up in the morning and have it with their morning coffee, lunch and dinner. And refuse to admit that it’s addictive, and that they can quit anytime. Sometimes they have to because they don’t have any. And then complain about the lucid dreams that wake them up) In the end, please tell me, what’s wrong with being clear-headed?
I’ve had to listen for hours on how wonderful cannabis is. I’d like to offer them a trade off. You talk to me for one hour on how wonderful cannabis is, and give me an hour to talk about how wonderful Jesus is. I’d get rolling eyes and even more negative responses.
Sorry about the rant. It’s just a hot button with me, I guess.

Regarding this whole “the man” thing, be careful not to blindly demonize any class or group like the government or the rich. Jesus dined with tax collectors. Tax collectors in those days were worse than today… not only did they take from their own people to give it to the Romans who had subjugated them, they were also notorious for cheating both sides and lining their own pockets.

Well, certainly he was a man who believed in peace and fair treatment for people of all background and colors.

I would say that part of him at least would be quite Christ-like, though that may be disputed here on CAF as there are some that argue that black people in the States should still have their own separate water fountains, dining areas, schools, etc. and others that are very adamant in their support of war or see it as something that will always be with us and thus a waste of time to oppose.
