The last official statement [a couple of years ago as I recall] I saw from the Vatican stated that the Bishop is expressing his personal opinion, to which he is entitled, but the responsibility for an official statement lies with the National Council of Bishops. I can’t find this at the moment, but have seen no subsequent statements.The bishop of Mostar, the diocese in which Medjugorje is located has officially stated that the apparitions are not authentic. The approval of the local ordinary is the first step for the Church to look into it. Since he has officially not approved it, that is as far as it goes. Can he or another bishop later change this decision, obviously yes. but until then, "Obedience, in all things, obedience.’>
