Is there a way for people to go to Confession with the coronavirus quarantine in place?

I like to go to confession once a month, and it’s been almost two months now (I’ve been busy with homework because of this whole coronavirus thing, my teachers are loading me up with the online coursework). I heard something about drive up confessionals on the news but I don’t know if that’s true or not. I’d like to get back in my monthly habit, but the nation-wide quarantine is making it difficult to do so. Does anyone know about any alternatives the Church is offering now, or if they’re working on something now to offer Confession when we can’t leave our homes?

What country are you in? If you can leave for necessities, call a priest and meet up with him somewhere. Also you can do this: PERFECT CONTRITION By REV. F. QUIRIJNEN, S.J. it provides a state of grace as long as you intend to confess as soon as you can. If you read it once meditatively, due to the structure of the book, you will almost certainly be back in a state of grace by the end of your read. Also it teaches you how to easily return to such a state without the book at all times.

I’m in the US, and my state’s under a 'stay at home" order, so we can’t leave our homes except in emergencies.

My state is also under this, and tomorrow I am going to confession. The soul is more than the body, and a state of mortal sin is an emergency. As we are allowed to go get food, medicine, and such, I will go get the same for my soul. Call the parish and definitely go. The priest should be there, if he lives in a rectory or such.

No, sadly my church is shut down services and such, I’d have to drive for an hour to get to the nearest one that’s open…

I would say to call public officials, and explain. However, If you do not have an exceptional burden of sin to lay down, tagtotaloffice’s suggestion would be better. Remember that our priests in hard-hit areas are busy with life-and-death situations.

Is there a way to have confession over the phone? That’s kind of the option I was hoping for but I was waiting to drive to an open church until I knew for sure that the shutdown would be much longer than I’d thought (past Easter…)

Confession has to be in person. The church may be closed, mine is, but I mean most specifically contacting a priest, as an individual, who may still be in town.

I just saw a thread in Liturgy and Sacraments that said the Pope released a statement saying that we can confess directly to God if confession is unavailable? Can someone check that and confirm or deny?

At our parish, the Church building is open for prayer, confessions, anointing for 2 hours every business days. Priests are also making appointments for confession. Simply call your parish OR check your Diocese website.

It is Catholic teaching that when one is in a state of mortal sin, they can confess to God by making a perfect act of contrition. You must go to confession as soon as the possibility is there.

Make an act of contrition, the pope said, and promise God, “‘I will go to confession afterward, but forgive me now.’ And immediately you will return to a state of grace with God.”

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, N. 1452, says: “When it arises from a love by which God is loved above all else, contrition is called ‘perfect’ — contrition of charity. Such contrition remits venial sins; it also obtains forgiveness of mortal sins if it includes the firm resolution to have recourse to sacramental confession as soon as possible.”

I do have a firm intention to go as soon as I am able. I check my parish website several times a day and a few days ago emailed one of the priests to see if they were available, but I haven’t gotten a reply yet. I pray this coronavirus mess doesn’t last too long, for the good of us all 🙂
