Is there any problem with Sola Scriptura?

But, you are defending tradition, too! Protestantism is a tradition, developed by men and handed on by men. We know their names. This is undeniable.

As to purgatory, you had better pray that purgatory exists! We all die with some level of sin on our souls. Nothing impure enters heaven (Revelation 21:27), yet we all die with sin. How, where and when does the sin “go away”? Do not claim “the cross” because that makes repentance unnecessary (Hitler would be in heaven) and Jesus told us that repentance is necessary. How are sins forgiven in the next life?
Disagee, Christ died for us to go to Purgatory??? Really. Which is man made idealogy.

No Christ died for our sins so we can go to heaven.

There is nothing explicit in the bible on purgatory, sounds like though you admit that which I respect.

Here he is wrong, for the final authority is Christ’s Supreme Vicar, the Pope who has Christ’s promise of the protection of the Holy Spirit against teaching error “when, as supreme pastor and teacher of all the faithful – who confirms his brethren in the faith (cf. Lk 22:32) – he proclaims in an absolute decision a doctrine pertaining to faith or morals.” The Pope has to approve everything which is taught by an Ecumenical Council.

As taught by the Second Vatican Council: The inspired books teach the truth. “Since therefore all that the inspired authors or sacred writers affirm should be regarded as affirmed by the Holy Spirit, we must acknowledge that the books of Scripture firmly, faithfully, and without error teach the truth which God, for the sake of our salvation, wished to see confided to the Sacred Scriptures.”

Note that, as a companion of Christ, Saint John wrote: “And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.’ (Jn 21:25).
Yes, but I also said Luther’s sheer lack of humility is ultimately what caused the schism. I don’t think it had to happen and had someone other than Luther, or had Luther had a cooler head, I think the Church would have heard his complaints with open ears.

However, every time Luther was challenged he immediately fell to name calling and bombast. I can tell you from my experience of being on reformed boards on different sites that this attitude is still prevalent.

The schism was needless and hod Luther listened more and insulted less then synod of Smalcald probably does happen and Trent does not, but Luther made his intentions quite clear that his mind was not going to be changed and that he believed the RCC had already made up its mind and so Smalcald never happened.

It is hard to say so many years later whether Luther was right, but now in a post-Trent world, I look at the Doctrines of grace taught by the Lutheran Church and to a lesser extent by very conservative Presbyterian and Baptist Churches and I do not think the chasm is unbridgeable. It is difficult but not impossible.

The thing that is lacking, still, is humility. I pray that God will make me more humble and that He will do the same with my Lutheran and Reformed brethren because the more I pray and think the stronger the attraction I feel to “come home” as Patrick Madrid calls it on his show on EWTN.

And I would like to think that the Holy Spirit is/will do the same for everyone else.

God Bless

Actually there is notable difference between the claims that you and I make. Although the doctrine of Purgatory is, at best, implied in Scripture, there is nothing inherently contradictory about this doctrine.

This is not the case with Sola Scriptura. Sola Scriptura is paradoxical because it states that Scripture alone is to be used for the formulation of authentic Christian doctrine, and yet Scripture does not actually teach this. So this means that Sola Scriptura is an extra-biblical doctrine that teaches people to reject extra-biblical doctrines. In other words, it fails to pass its own test of authenticity! In light of this, the concept of Sola Scriptura is self-contradictory, and (according to the general rules of logic and philosophy) any proposed concept which is inherently contradictory must be disregarded as false.
Mis information. I have provided numerous examples in scripture where Moses and Christ refer to the infallibility of scripture and rebuke those locked in tradition. You choose to ignore being its inconvenient.

And who is to blame for that? Who do we blame for the various definitions of sola scriptura?.. Blame the protestants for sola scriptura and its many definitions they invented it and they perverted it.
I’m not sure that blaming will help and it is not something I myself am very concerned with. There have certainly been errors but at this point blame might not be the best way to fix them. In fact I’m sure an argument presented with the word blame to the average Protestant will end any chance of victory. But yes, SS is a pretty terrible doctrine.

Those in purgatory are saved and do go to heaven. Scripture tells you this so I am somewhat surprised that you, being a sola scripturist, don’t know that. Of course, Purgatory is one of those things that did not fit early protestant ideas so they simply denied it and you are the recipient of their error. But scripture still attests to the saved man who on the day of judgement goes through a purification by fire. That is a pretty explicit depiction of purgatory. In fact, purgatory is more explicit in the Bible than the concept of the Trinity that Christians have. Christians understand the Trinity in terms of person and essence and substance. These are extra biblical concepts that come to us from Greek philosophy but were used by the Church to define the Godhead. Nowhere in scripture or even Jewish philosophical thought are these concepts found.

I think blame is an appropriate term to use. Protestants have no one to point fingers at except themselves. They took themselves out of the church and they are the ones who presently are still keeping themselves out of the church. The responsibility is theirs and theirs alone and thus they can ans shpuld blame themselves.

Wrong! Purgatory is taught and it was taught and believed by Jews and even up to our days. If it is a man-made ideology as you believe, please tell me when, where and WHO invented this false idealogy? Where are the early church historical records clearly showing people protesting this man-made idea?

If you can provide explicit scripture on purgatory I will accept your answer as credible, likely though you have wasted my time.

You are ducking the question. Purgatory is a state in which we are cleansed so that we may enter where nothing impure may enter (heaven).

Let me get this straight: You are perfect so that you may enter heaven right now? Wow!

Purgatory is the way to heaven for those of us who are not perfect. It is God’s mud room where we are cleaned up before we can enter His house. Read 1 Corinthians 3. “Saved, but only as if through fire” Hello?

You have a better explanation than Paul?

Do you really consider explicit?

Still waiting for your explicit scripture on purgatory. Thx.

I’m not ignoring it and it is not inconvenient.

The concept of Scripture being infallible does not equal Sola Scriptura. Scripture does not say that Scripture alone is infallible, nor does it say that Scripture is the final authority.

If you think otherwise then explain how the Book of Genesis was infallible during the many centuries when it was an unwritten oral tradition. Obviously it was infallible revelation before being Scripture.

As a side note, I think you mean to say that Scripture is inerrant rather than infallible. They are related but there is a distinction (generally speaking, inerrant means Scripture is free of error, while infallible is typically associated with an authoritative interpretation of Scripture and/or Tradition). I won’t make a big issue out of it in terms of this discussion, but I thought it was worth pointing out.

Jesus never denounced all tradition. In each case, he denounced a specific tradition which was not faithful to God’s intended revelation (such as the Pharisees trying to condemn Jesus for healing people on the Sabbath). Moreover, Paul specifically teaches people to obey tradition.

Agreed. My point is Sola is not explicit yet nor is purgatory. It’s touche.
Well, simply stated, I hope that there is some mechanism by which we are saved “as one escaping through fire.” You might read 1 Corinthians 3 and ponder it. Sounds like the “refiner’s fire”, doesn’t it? Why would Paul write such about the day of our judgment? He clearly states that our judgment day is more complicated than simply bursting through the gates and receiving a hearty welcome. Could it just be that he was describing the process of Christ’s blood redeeming us? That process is only called purgatory as it purges us of remaining sin before we enter the Kingdom. It is the shower and shave before our wedding. You do not experience purgatory if you are headed to hell. Why wash a car before sending it to the junkyard?

As well, Catholic doctrine is not arrived at by private interpretation, or by whim, or by a raving, emotional ex catherda declaration of a spurious pope. The Holy Spirit is present and these things take years, decades, centuries. I would be very concerned if they were decided suddenly. Truthfully, not a single doctrine is contrary to scripture that is properly understood.

2 Maccabees 40-46 ( I also contend in is in the NT in Lazarus and the rich man, which many insert the word Hades into because of this very issue. Wow- a need to change sola scriptura - the irony )

I would ask you to answer the questions asked of the OP. Which scripture do you speak of and by what authority to you have to define the correct scripture?

This tends to become a circle.

Purgatory may very well be present in the bible in an implied (not explicit) manner. Many Catholics site implied purgatory scriptures, I get that but its not explicit by any stretch of the imagination. You agree to that???

Just the same I have repeated one after another in scripture supporting Sola in an implied (not explicit) manner.

Different people define Sola Scriptura in different ways. I have asked you at least twice to give us your own definition of Sola Scriptura, and as far as I can tell, you have not yet done so. Up until now I have had to base my responses on what I have found to be a general understanding of the term.

Therefore, instead of continuing to presume we know what your definition of Sola Scriptura is, why don’t you go ahead and clearly state it in this thread. If you don’t, how can you expect us to properly discuss whether or not it is implied in Scripture?
