Is it possible to complete this sentence: “God cannot…”? To clarify, this means without the use of a helping verb such as “to be.” (ie, “God cannot be contained,” “God cannot be fully understood,” etc).

God cannot do something that contradicts His nature, nor something that contradicts what something is (in other words He couldn’t create a square circle).

True, but he could take that away at any moment. It is within the power of the God of the universe to change history without any of us realizing it. Or are you suggesting God is limited in that regard?

So, you’re saying God is limited. Isn’t that in itself contradictory?

It depends on how you define unlimited. I don’t see how not doing something logically contradictory which violates what something is as a limit.

You need to distinguish between power and nature for this question. God has the capability to do anything. So yes, God can make us all not exist. God can remove our free will. God can rewrite this universe so that square circles can exist.

But he won’t do any of that. He will not annihilate us, nor override our free will. It isn’t in his nature to do that. He can, but he has no desire to.

Would it be possible for Jesus to microwave a burrito so hot that he himself could not eat it? 😎. I forget where I heard that, but it cracked me up.

In God, power is not simply the ability to accomplish something. In God, power is conditioned by love.
And there is a lot to be explored there.

by analogy, a parent has the power to lock a child in it’s room to prevent harm. But, if the parent is loving, it’s not in the parent’s nature to do that.

We see God most fully in Christ, who is the Logos. P Benedict used to speak about God’s logos. It has the connotation of “reasonableness”. Not that God can be reasoned with in human terms, but that what God does reveal has a rationality to it. God is not arbitrary, like making square circles etc…

Create a stone so heavy he cant lift it?

Create logical imposdibilities:

Female stallians, round squares etc?

Im curious too.

God can do anything, wether or not He wants to is the question.

For example:

Can God destory the universe as easily as snapping His fingers? Yes
Would God do that? No

There’s unlimited positive numbers, but they cannot be negative numbers. They are still unlimited.

Here is some more food for thought.
In God, acting and being are one thing. So if God is a certain way, acting is one with that way of being.
Philosophers can express this more accurately.

God cannot lie or will not lie. Not sure if there is a distinction there.
