Is There Getting To Be a "Cool Factor" To Being Gay - Especially Among the Young?

For the lesbians I know, it is a little more complicated. Most of the more feminine lesbians I know do have opposite sex attraction. As same sex relationships are more socially acceptable, these women are more likely to pursue relationships with other women. Given the sexual and social immaturity of many modern heterosexual men, I can’t say that I blame them.
Ouch. >_<;; Truth IS painful at times (even in my case).

But wait, girls go lesbian because of men’s sexual immaturity? I’m not sure I’ve heard that before.
Lesbians may be homosexuals, but there is a big difference between lesbians and gay men that most people don’t acknowledge.
Overall, you’ve made an interesting post. I too formulated my “Troll Mode Homophobe Card Counter” based on this perception. However, I can’t seem to get beyond the fact that male attraction towards perverse, lesbian acts is more evident than well… the counterpart for that. >_>

Not quite. Bisexual women are attracted to both men and women. But to be in a monogamous relationship, a bisexual person must choose either a male or a female partner. The increasing social acceptance of lesbian relationships and the decreasing maturity of modern men make it more likely that a bisexual woman would chose a lesbian relationship over a heterosexual one.

This is because the lesbian act itself is not perverse. It’s nothing most married heterosexuals haven’t done and enjoyed with full blessing of the Church and scripture (Song of Solomon 7:2). The idea that Paul is specifically calling lesbianism a “degrading passion” in Romans 1:26 is a modern interpretation that has only come about very recently, starting among Protestants who have accepted contraception and heterosexual sodomy.

As for male attraction, most men are interested in multiple women. (How many wives and concubines did King Solomon have?) One woman good, two women better. Don’t overthink this.

The problem with lesbianism (and polygamy for that matter) is not the act itself, but that even a committed monogamous lesbian relationship falls short of God’s idea for marriage. It is behavior inappropriate for for a friendship in a relationship that will never be a marriage.

dude, it was cool over ten years ago when I was in high school. I can only imagine it’s gotten even cooler, now that society has become more accepting… 😦

The devil is glamorising sin. The devil has been let loose and is destroying the souls of the majority of our youth. Soon those of us defending the Catechism will be alienated and marginalised. Then there will be torture and prison. These are my sober predictions. I pray that I am wrong. In the meantime the vitriol is confined to slurs such as “you bigot” or “you homophobe”

Bit ‘cataclysmic’ there if you ask me. I doubt it, most people who ‘support’ these movements rarely do anything but throw words around the internet and I doubt they would commit murder over something they do to be ‘cool’.

I think you underestimate your own faith. It has with stood persecution before, survived wars and genocide and I don’t think a bunch of teenagers will pose much of a threat to a church that is still standing after much greater threats that actually DID torture and kill believers, very few of which recanted, most refusing to denounce their faith in the face of torture and death.

I hope you are right but I wouldn’t confine the issue to a bunch of teens. The state seems intent on foisting their own brand of morality. They are even placing same sex marriage on a par with the civil rights movement. Oh well Lord grant me, a coward, courage

Homosexuals do not deserve to be even slightly marginalized as persons, but the current thinking is that you cannot oppose a person’s behavioral choices without marginalizing the person. I think you underestimate the political power that comes when false choices are given a false cover and a false charm by making the choices out to be an authentic part of a person’s dignity. That the Church has withstood persecution is hardly reason to submit to persecution without saying that it is, indeed, persecution. If persecution is falsely sold as righteous indignation and the pursuit of justice, then even those who want to be just can be sucked into persecuting. Don’t think witchcraft trials are something of which the “non-violent” left isn’t capable.

There are places in the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia where speaking of homosexual actions as if these were sinful acts with which one cannot be complicit in good conscience is considered discrimination or a hate crime, punishable by fines or imprisonment.

We’ve been witnessing this with our son for years. It’s not just promoted by his friends (straight & gay alike) but by teachers and now professors. We’ve dealt with the accusations that we’re prejudiced because we tell him that SSA doesn’t make you “cool,” and we’ve had to complain about a religion teacher at a Catholic high school telling the class that, from a Catholic perspective, the Church now teaches that SSA is A-okay as long as you’re truly in love and committed to one person. It makes teaching Christian love & acceptance and the morality of homosexuality a real minefield, mainly because the one lends credence the coolness claims, while the other (in his mind) bolstered the “Mom & Dad are hateful bigots” claims.
😊 it just keeps getting worse

It is a shame. My grandfather submitted an article into the paper (and was published) condemning the government for toying with the idea to recognize and allow gay marriage stating the government has no right to determine what is morally correct. He also argued that those who cry ‘discrimination’ should be silent as they are partaking in a lifestyle that is not normal and must be ready to accept that and the slings and arrows that come with it.

I actually could argue any gay pride march or celebration should be banned as it is public promiscuity. Homosexuality is primarily in the bedroom. If a gay argued ‘but it makes us who we are/ its a life style etc’ I would say “Great, so BDSM couples should be able to parade around. It is a life style and it does define who they are”.
it just keeps getting worse
I can understand why though. If a gay teen kills himself then people will blame the schools for not tolerating his decision. Law suits are useable if it is found they neglected their duty of care, which as homosexuality is a hot topic, would be quite possible. The school needs to cover its a** as many people now days blame learning institutions for a child’s bad behavior or problems rather then the parents or the child itself.

There is so much hate and ignorance in this post.

I have no issues with all of you, as Catholics, believing homosexual actions to be sinful, but the attitude above reflects poorly on your community.

My experience is that there is a big difference between male and female homosexuality.

For the gay men I know, I doubt that there is any “cool” factor at play here. They are completely and obviously gay. They are not interested in women.

The more masculine “butch” lesbians have exclusively same sex attraction–and are generally attracted to feminine women–but are less common. (Although my understanding is that a significant number of these individuals may actually be intersexed.)

Notably, the only line in the Bible dealing with women’s perversions, Romans 1:26, refers specifically to heterosexual perversions, not lesbianism. (Hint: The women are doing same “degrading/vile” act with the men that the men are doing with each other. This interpretation makes more sense textually, historically, and from a health perspective.) This makes sense because lesbian sex involves a neutral act (permitted for married couples as foreplay) in an immoral context, while gay sex involves an illicit and unhealthy act in a immoral context. The problem with lesbianism is that both the act and the relationship are a poor imitation of God’s design for human sexuality and marriage.

Lesbians may be homosexuals, but there is a big difference between lesbians and gay men that most people don’t acknowledge.
No, there really isn’t.

One. I am not Catholic so my opinion is not part of the community.

Two. How is it ignorant? Homosexuality is primarily a life choice that is expressed most often in the privacy of the bedroom. Why must those who disapprove of these actions be treated like a leper and as someone pointed out, fined and imprisoned, because we decide to say “that isnt right”

I am all for gay rights but when their rights begin to take priority over the rights to free speech then I get a little annoyed. As they have the right to say “we are gay and proud” I should have the right to raise an opposing argument without being treated poorly.

I truely believe there is a big double standard on how society is viewing this whole gay/lesbian thing. If a one of my daughters was sexually assualted by a man I believe the gay/lesbian activists would be behind me wanting to make sure that man was “punished”. If my daughter was sexually assualted by a woman that same community would say I’m being a bigot for wanting that person prosecuted, and they would do so because I’ve openly stood for same sex relationships as the only “normal” that I can accept in my home.
I have no problem with what people do in their own homes, but when a couple in an alternative lifestyle chooses to keep trying to force everyone around them to accept that lifestyle, then I have a problem. As much as a gay couple wants others to respect their rights to live in whatever lifestyle they choose, I believe they should also respect a heterosexual couples right to keep our children/grandchildren away from that lifestyle. I would never sit on my husbands lap and act like we’re alone in front of anyone, for a gay couple to do that (and it has been done at family functions) is straight out disrespectful. And yet when my husband said something about it we were called “unloving, bigots”.

When my son ‘came out’ to his friends it was ‘high fives’ all round. They were all so proud of him. I honestly believe that, their eagerness to accept him as ‘gay’ was one of many factors that got him to where he is now.

My mothers heart has never hurt as it does now, I hate the gay ‘agenda’ that has blinded my boy, my son. Thankfully I am able to point out to him that of all the people in his life, it is only the ones who truly love him, his dad and me, his brothers and sisters, his grandparents and his uncles and aunts (on my side), that will not approve of the lifestyle into which he is slipping. Those others, the friends, aren’t really interested in what is good for him, not the way we are. They like the image and the coolness of it all but hold no concerns for his immortal soul.

Please pray for him.

I feel really sorry for your son.

His friends were being supportive. They were obviously happy and honoured that he trusted them enough to tell them something they could easily have used against him. Coming out is a big thing, a risky thing, of course they wanted to show him support. Have you considered that maybe they simply do not believe he (or anyone) has an immortal soul to protect? Or maybe just that being gay is not wrong or harmful to him or anyone else?

You know, my partner is the same sex as my assigned-at-birth sex, and I have never felt any “cool factor”. Just a lot of discrimination and recently my grandfather requested that I call the person whom I love more than anything, who saved my life multiple times, whom I would donate all my organs to, who means more to me than my own lungs, my “friend”. I hung up. Alienation from family hurts, and it will hurt your son, but it will not make him “less gay”. Just like it hasn’t made me love and want to be with my partner any less.

You alienated yourself by expecting them to keep silent and tacitly accept your gravely sinful ways. Alienation should hurt. Nobody has an obligation to help anyone’s sins feel more pleasant.

I am an adult, they are adults, but they are acting like petulant children by effectively saying “pretend you are not with a woman and THEN IT WILL NOT BE TRUE”. I’m not going to adapt my vocabulary to one bratty person, instead I will be around people who care about me beyond my partner’s genitals.

I will point out that by being with a same-sex partner I am not sinning if I am not having sexual relations. Which you cannot possibly know by looking at a couple.

You’re sinning if you treat each other as anything beyond friends, whether there’s sex or not, by indulging in a perversion of romantic feelings. And if there’s nothing sexual, then say so. Don’t try to confuse the matter by appealing to a (false) general principle that may not even apply to your individual case.

I will not say so as I do not think it’s any of your business whether my girlfriend and I are having sex or not. And romantic feelings toward someone of the same assigned sex are not sinful. Nowhere in the Catechism does it say I am not allowed to love a woman. In any case, I was giving an example of typical treatment given to anyone society deems to be “gay”. Kindly step out of my bedroom.
